Yes, the reports are real—but the situation has changed. Samsung introduced promotions on the idle Cover Screen of certain Family Hub refrigerators in the United States. On supported appliances with the relevant software update, you can now disable them by opening Settings → Advertisements → Cover screen Ads and switching the feature off.
Which Samsung refrigerators are affected?
This applies to certain Samsung Family Hub refrigerators with an interactive display—not ordinary Samsung refrigerators without a screen. Samsung initially described the advertising as a U.S. pilot, and availability can vary by model, software version and country.

The promotions appear on the refrigerator’s idle Cover Screen, rather than as conventional full-screen video commercials interrupting temperature controls or food-management tools. Early reports identified themes such as Weather, Color and Daily Board as affected. Samsung says the Art and Album themes do not display advertisements.
Samsung’s announcement describes the ads as contextual and non-personalized. That is Samsung’s characterization; it should not be treated as an independently audited finding about the company’s data practices. Samsung’s announcement explains the pilot and its advertised-screen behavior.

How to turn off Samsung fridge ads
- Wake the Family Hub display.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advertisements.
- Tap Cover screen Ads.
- Turn the switch off.
Samsung documents this as the direct opt-out for supported refrigerators. Menu wording may differ slightly on some models; Samsung refers to the relevant controls as “screen” or “wallpaper” in some guidance. See the current Samsung support instructions.
What if the advertising setting is missing?
The control may not appear until the refrigerator receives the appropriate Family Hub software update. Try these steps in order:

- Confirm that the refrigerator is connected to the internet.
- Install any available Family Hub software update.
- After the update finishes, reopen Settings.
- Check the Advertisements and Cover Screen, Wallpaper or Style settings again.
- If the switch is still unavailable, select Album or Art as the Cover Screen theme.
- Restart the display and check the settings once more.
There is no universal firmware number that applies to every affected Family Hub refrigerator, so do not assume that a version reported for another model applies to yours. If the documented controls remain absent, contact Samsung support with the refrigerator’s model number and software version.

If your model does not show the opt-out setting—or you simply want a fallback—change the Cover Screen theme to Album or Art. Samsung says advertisements do not appear with those themes.

The trade-off is that the idle screen may no longer show the information associated with Weather, Color or Daily Board themes. This changes the Cover Screen experience, but it avoids the promotions without disconnecting the refrigerator from Samsung’s online services.
Can you remove just one advertisement?
Yes. Tap the X on an individual promotion to dismiss it. Samsung says that particular advertisement will remain hidden for the duration of its campaign.

This is not a permanent global opt-out. Other promotions, or the same type of promotion in a later campaign, may still appear. The lasting control—where available—is Settings → Advertisements → Cover screen Ads → Off.

- On September 18, 2025, Samsung confirmed a U.S. pilot placing promotions on the Cover Screens of certain Family Hub refrigerators.
- During the early September pilot, reports said owners could dismiss individual promotions but did not have a complete setting to disable all advertising.
- From October 2025 onward, Samsung announced a Family Hub software update adding an Advertisements setting.
- Samsung’s current support guidance documents the off switch and the Art/Album fallback.
So “you can’t turn off Samsung fridge ads” was a reasonable description of some owners’ experience during the initial pilot. It is no longer generally accurate for supported, updated refrigerators.
What turning off ads does—and does not—do
Samsung describes the control as managing advertising on the Cover Screen. There is no evidence in the official instructions that switching it off disables refrigeration, temperature control or door alarms.
However, appliance models and software versions differ, and cloud-dependent Family Hub features can have their own requirements. It is therefore safer not to promise that every connected feature will behave identically after every software change.

It could interfere with remote monitoring, notifications, software updates, recipes, shopping tools and other Family Hub services. A factory reset is also excessive for this problem and may erase account links, preferences, lists and other configuration. Use Samsung’s setting or an ad-free theme first.
Bottom line for Family Hub owners
The refrigerator ads are real, but they are limited to certain Family Hub models and Cover Screen configurations rather than all Samsung refrigerators. Update the appliance, then look for Settings → Advertisements → Cover screen Ads. If that option is unavailable, choose the Art or Album theme instead. Older reports about there being no way to disable the ads describe the early pilot, not necessarily your refrigerator’s current software.
