The Yoder YS640S is a large, heavy pellet grill with a manufacturer-listed 1,070 square inches of cooking space, a 20-pound hopper and substantial steel construction. It may suit buyers who want generous grate capacity and a configurable outdoor cooker, but its 335-pound listed weight, large footprint, extra-cost accessories and a discrepancy in Yoder’s temperature claims deserve attention before purchase. This is a specifications-and-buying review, not a hands-on cooking test.
What is the Yoder YS640S?
The YS640S is Yoder Smokers’ pellet grill in the YS640 line. Yoder lists the Yoder YS640S pellet grill with a ⅛-inch steel cooking chamber, an ACS (Adaptive Control System) controller, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and two integrated food probes. Its standard equipment also includes ceramic ignition, a two-piece heat diffuser with access door, a variable displacement damper, stainless-steel main grates, a two-piece slide-out upper grate, stay-cool handles, a grease drain, a door counterweight and a probe access port. These are manufacturer-listed features, not independently tested findings.
For a construction-minded buyer, the practical consideration is scale: this is a 335-pound cooker with steel construction, not a small patio appliance. Plan its location, access route and storage before arranging delivery.
How much cooking space does the YS640S have?
Yoder lists 1,070 square inches of cooking surface. Its stated layout comprises four main grates, each 7.69 by 19.75 inches, plus a 15-by-28-inch second-level slide-out grate. The upper grate adds usable space when needed and can slide out for access to the main grate. These figures and dimensions are manufacturer specifications; no independent measurement was conducted. How large and heavy is it?
The manufacturer lists the YS640S at 61.3 inches long including the side shelf, 55 inches high and 36.1 inches deep including the front shelf. Listed weight is 335 pounds. These are listed product figures rather than independently measured dimensions.
- Before delivery: Measure the intended spot, including clearance for the side and front shelves and room to open or access the grill.
- Before moving it: Check the route from delivery point to cooking area, including gates, steps, thresholds and turns. Do not assume its casters make the full 335-pound unit easy to move over every surface.
- For drawings or setup planning: Yoder provides dimensional documents through its downloadable resources.
Temperature claims: an important point to clarify
Yoder’s product page is inconsistent: promotional prose says the grill can reach 700°F for searing, while a specification image on the same page labels its temperature range as 150–600°F. Both are manufacturer claims, and neither was independently tested here. Because the stated maximum differs, confirm the operating range for the exact configuration directly with Yoder before buying if high-heat searing is a deciding factor. Yoder’s product page states a 10-year warranty for the cooking chamber and three years for both the ACS controller and ceramic igniter. The 2023 operation manual additionally states one year for tires and casters against manufacturing defects. Outdoor use and setup safety
Yoder’s manual says, “The grill is intended for outdoor use only.” It advises using the cooker in an open-air environment where carbon monoxide can dissipate. The manual also advises a grounded GFCI receptacle in North America, warns against use in rain or around water, and says to store pellets dry because moisture can affect operation and may lock the auger. Follow the full current manual for setup and safe use; its opening instruction is: “PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE MANUAL BEFORE USING YOUR NEW YODER SMOKERS S-SERIES PELLET GRILL.” Read the YS640S operation manual.
Is the Yoder YS640S worth it?
The YS640S is worth considering if you need its listed 1,070 square inches of grate area, value its steel construction and integrated controller features, and have the room and access to accommodate a 335-pound grill. The case is less compelling if you need a compact or easily relocatable cooker, expect accessories to be included, or need an independently confirmed temperature ceiling. Yoder’s claims and specifications provide a detailed buying picture, but they do not establish real-world cooking performance, app behavior, pellet consumption or durability.
Before committing, compare a current delivered quote and configuration, confirm accessory fit and written warranty terms, resolve the temperature-range question if it matters to your cooking, and plan the grill’s placement and safe outdoor setup.
