What the seller claims about rifled PVC
Spudgun Technology Center has listed rifled PVC pipe in 1.5-inch and 2-inch sizes. Its undated product listing says, “Range testing indicates about a 50% increase in accuracy for potatoes.” That is the seller’s claim, not a generally established result: the listing does not describe a test method, sample size, comparison setup, or test date. How strong is the accuracy evidence?
The distinction is between a seller-reported test and a published independent comparison. The available sources provide the former, but no independent rifled-versus-smoothbore accuracy result. Without a disclosed protocol and independently reported measurements, the approximately 50% figure cannot establish how broadly the improvement applies or whether another setup would produce the same result.

A 2013 experimental paper by E. D. S. Courtney and M. W. Courtney studies the internal ballistics of a combustion-driven potato cannon. It does not test rifling or compare accuracy, so it cannot corroborate the seller’s claim. Its reported muzzle-velocity measurements concern experimental propellants, not rifled versus smooth pipe. What the PVC warning means
The seller’s safety page states: “PVC pipe and fittings are not approved by the manufacturer to be used for constructing spudguns.” This is the seller’s notice, not a quotation from a named pipe manufacturer. The same page says, “Spudguns can be extremely dangerous when used unsafely or inappropriately,” recommends eye and hearing protection, and warns against use of PVC launchers in cold and very hot weather. Protective glasses and ear plugs may help protect against particular hazards; they do not resolve the underlying warning about PVC or establish that a launcher is safe.
