The figures were reported by CollingwoodToday.ca on October 16, 2026, using Town of Collingwood figures.
Infrastructure director Mohamed Alkoka said several long-planned projects reached their construction timelines in the same year. “Some years, because of the timing of larger projects, considerably more construction is visible than in others. 2026 was one of those years,” he said.

Why so many roads are under construction in Collingwood
The town’s infrastructure program combines full reconstructions, a road widening, underground utility work, resurfacing, safer crossings and traffic-calming measures. These projects become especially disruptive when they overlap, because crews need road space for excavation, utility installation, drainage, paving and inspections.
Alkoka said roads and underground infrastructure have defined service lives. Continuous reinvestment is therefore needed to maintain the level of service residents expect, rather than waiting until every asset reaches an emergency condition.

Road resurfacing across Collingwood
Alongside major reconstruction, the town’s 2026 program included approximately $2.5 million in resurfacing. Resurfacing is less extensive than rebuilding a road and its underground services, but it can still require milling, temporary lane closures, paving operations and short-term access changes.

Crossings and speed management added to the program
The town spent approximately $310,000 on pedestrian-crossing improvements at Campbell Street and Maple Street, on Cameron Street in front of Cameron Street Public School, and at Tenth Street and Birch Street.
Collingwood also installed 18 speed humps. Alkoka described them as a new style of permanent speed hump for Collingwood, intended to add a physical measure that helps manage vehicle speeds. These installations can involve temporary traffic controls even when they do not require the depth of excavation associated with reconstruction.

Which projects moved to 2027?
Fair Street and Victory Drive reconstruction did not proceed during the 2026 construction season. The town deferred both projects to spring 2027 after work on Katherine Street and Second Street took longer than anticipated.

- Procurement timing
- Weather conditions
- Issues obtaining utility locates
The town also wanted to avoid opening roads and leaving incomplete construction over the winter. Deferral therefore reduces the risk of an unfinished site being exposed to winter conditions, although it means residents near those streets should expect construction in spring 2027.

Two resurfacing segments were removed from the 2026 program for consideration in 2027: Oak Street from Sixth to Seventh streets and Spruce Street from Seventh to Tenth streets.
What residents and businesses should expect during active work
Construction impacts vary by project. Full reconstruction and watermain work are most likely to involve road closures, detours, excavation and temporary water interruptions. Resurfacing generally produces shorter paving-related closures. Crossing and speed-hump installations can create brief access changes and traffic control around the work zone.
The town has said it wants to provide more frequent, project-specific updates, including notices about paving dates, temporary water interruptions and access changes. It also identified better coordination among contractors, utility companies and town departments as a way to reduce avoidable disruption.
What is planned beyond the 2026 road program?
Collingwood is considering a broader, phased capital program beginning in 2027 for pedestrian, cycling and traffic-calming improvements. Alkoka said the scope grew beyond what could reasonably be implemented as a single-year initiative, so the work is being considered as a multi-year effort rather than one large construction season.
For residents tracking a specific street, the key distinction is whether it is part of the 2026 work, one of the projects deferred to spring 2027, or a resurfacing segment being considered for 2027. Project-specific town notices should provide the most reliable information about closure dates, detours, water service and property access.
