Xiaomi introduced the Xiaomi Smart Electric Hot Water Dispenser 5L in China in September 2023. The countertop appliance holds 5 liters of water, uses a 1,600-watt heating system, offers temperatures from 40°C to 90°C, and dispenses measured portions. Xiaomi says it can bring a full 5-liter tank to a boil in approximately 18 minutes—but that is a manufacturer test claim, not an independent performance result.
For international buyers, especially in the United States, the more important questions are electrical compatibility, regional availability, app support, warranty coverage, and the maintenance demands of a large warm-water reservoir.

What Xiaomi actually launched
Although launch coverage commonly calls it the Mijia Smart Electric Kettle 5L, Xiaomi’s official product name is the Xiaomi Smart Electric Hot Water Dispenser 5L.
It is better understood as a large smart hot-water dispenser or thermal boiler than as a conventional cordless kettle. A normal kettle typically boils a relatively small amount of water in a removable vessel. Xiaomi’s appliance stores up to 5 liters, heats the water, holds selected temperatures, and dispenses set quantities through an outlet.

That makes it suitable for repeated servings in a household, office, shared kitchen, or family space. It is not a portable kettle designed to be lifted and poured after every boil.
Xiaomi calculates the capacity as up to 20 cups, using a 250 mL cup measurement. Actual servings will vary depending on the size of the mug or bottle.

The listed dimensions and operating details come from Xiaomi’s official product FAQ. The FAQ’s separate references to 1,600W and 220–240V should not be confused: 1,600W is the heating power rating, while 220–240V is the required supply voltage.

Xiaomi claims that the dispenser can heat 5 liters of water to boiling in approximately 18 minutes. The company identifies this as its own test result, associated with report number DQ2023082113188.
That timing is physically plausible. Heating 5 liters of water through roughly an 80°C temperature increase requires about 1.67 megajoules, or approximately 0.46 kWh, before accounting for heat losses. A 1,600W heater supplied for 18 minutes would consume about 0.48 kWh at its nameplate power. This is an explanatory calculation, not an independent measurement of the appliance.
Real-world results can differ with:
- Starting water temperature
- The actual amount of water in the tank
- Altitude and the local boiling point
- Room temperature and other environmental conditions
- Voltage and electrical conditions
- Heat loss during the cycle
In other words, “18 minutes” should be read as Xiaomi’s approximate full-capacity test figure—not a guarantee that every 5-liter fill will boil in exactly that time.

Temperature control and smart features
The appliance can heat and hold water at selectable temperatures between 40°C and 90°C. Users can choose from approximately 200 mL, 300 mL, and 500 mL dispensing amounts, which is more convenient than repeatedly filling a cup and estimating the volume.
Its main smart-home features include:
- Xiaomi Home/Mi Home control: The app can be used to add the dispenser and configure heating, keep-warm, and dispensing-related settings.
- Custom modes: Xiaomi says users can select a heating temperature, dechlorination operation, keep-warm behavior, and keep-warm temperature.
- Extended boiling: A one-touch boiling function is intended to reduce residual chlorine.
- Boiling-point detection: The unit can detect the local boiling point and adjust for altitude.
- Child lock: This helps prevent unintended dispensing or operation.
- Night illumination: The dispensing area includes lighting for use in darker conditions.
- Digital display: The display shows operating information and settings.
“Smart” here means app-connected temperature and operating controls. Xiaomi’s FAQ says the dispenser does not support voice prompts, although it provides confirmation sounds. The available documentation does not establish universal Google Assistant or Alexa control for this specific appliance, so buyers should not assume that voice functionality is available in every country or app region.
First use and altitude calibration
Xiaomi recommends cleaning the unit before drinking from it. Its documented first-use process is:
- Add approximately 2–3 liters of water.
- Connect the dispenser to power.
- Press the boil-water button.
- Allow the boil cycle to finish.
- Drain the water through the outlet.
The first boil also allows the dispenser to identify the local boiling point. Xiaomi says that value is saved automatically, which is particularly relevant for homes at higher altitude. A sealed appliance may also have an odor when first unpacked; Xiaomi describes boiling and draining water before normal use as expected preparation.
Cleaning, water quality, and safety
The glass liner and 316 stainless-steel heating plate may appeal to buyers who prefer to minimize contact with plastic or coated heating surfaces. Xiaomi also lists a rigid, non-silicone water pipe, a PP outer shell, and double-layer insulation designed to reduce exterior heat.

Those are material and design claims, not a substitute for independent certification or a guarantee of water purity. Xiaomi describes the materials as safe in its FAQ, but that language should be treated as the manufacturer’s claim rather than an independent laboratory finding.

Extended boiling intended to reduce chlorine is not the same as filtration, sterilization, or removal of heavy metals and other contaminants. Use an appropriate water source and do not buy this appliance expecting it to function as a purifier.
Practical maintenance matters more with a 5-liter reservoir than with a small kettle:
- Descale the tank and heating surface according to the manual and local water hardness.
- Empty and clean the reservoir periodically rather than leaving water stagnant indefinitely.
- Do not immerse the appliance or splash its electrical components; Xiaomi says the dispenser is not waterproof.
- Move the unit carefully because the glass interior may be more vulnerable to impact than a conventional stainless-steel liner.
- Keep the appliance at least 30 cm from flames and other heat sources, as specified by Xiaomi.
Double-wall insulation does not eliminate scalding risk. The water, outlet, and dispensing area can still be hot, so the child lock should be used where appropriate.

Many buyers assume that an electric kettle automatically shuts itself off after boiling. Xiaomi’s FAQ says this dispenser does not power off automatically and must be turned off manually. That is a significant difference from the expected behavior of many conventional kettles and should be considered before purchase.
Power use and counter-space trade-offs
A full heating cycle uses a substantial amount of power. At the rated 1,600W, 18 minutes of continuous heating represents roughly 0.48 kWh before accounting for heater cycling, efficiency, and the actual duration of operation. Keeping water warm and reheating it repeatedly can add to consumption.
The approximately 2W standby figure applies when the appliance is waiting; it does not describe the energy required to heat or maintain 5 liters of water.

Capacity is another practical trade-off. Five liters of water weighs about 5 kg. Adding the dispenser’s 2.2 kg net weight produces a full operating load of roughly 7.2 kg, before considering the lid and other components. The unit also measures nearly 35 cm tall, so buyers should check both counter depth and overhead clearance.

Xiaomi’s documented pairing route is:
- Install the Mi Home/Xiaomi Home app.
- Open the app and tap the + icon in the upper-right corner.
- Follow the prompts to add the device.
- Select the dispenser and configure the desired temperature or custom mode.
Labels and menus can vary by app version, country, account region, and firmware. Before importing, check whether the product appears in the Xiaomi Home region used by your account.
If pairing fails, Xiaomi documents these reset actions:
- Hold the Cup Volume button for approximately seven seconds to reset Wi-Fi.
- Hold the Keep Warm button for approximately seven seconds to place the dispenser into connection-waiting mode.
Button names and timings should be checked against the physical manual supplied with the particular regional edition.
The official FAQ identifies two fault codes:
- E1: Sensor open circuit.
- E2: Sensor short circuit.
These are service issues rather than ordinary user settings. Xiaomi advises contacting a local after-sales service center for sensor faults or problems involving the heating panel, circuit board, abnormal automatic operation, or a missing display or prompt sound.
China launch price and availability
The product launched in China in September 2023. Launch coverage reported a crowdfunding price of 269 yuan, with the crowdfunding period running from September 20 to October 4, 2023. Later coverage reported broader Chinese availability beginning at 299 yuan.

Those are historical China-market prices, not a current U.S. retail price. Xiaomi has published regional product listings such as the UK page, but the available official pages do not establish current U.S. pricing, U.S. stock, country-specific warranty coverage, or identical app functionality in every region.
The U.S. voltage problem
Xiaomi’s FAQ specifies an AC 220–240V power requirement. Standard U.S. household outlets provide approximately 120V, so a simple plug adapter is not enough: it changes the plug shape but does not convert voltage.
U.S. buyers should not connect a 220–240V model directly to a standard 120V outlet. A voltage transformer would need to be appropriately rated for a 1,600W load, and transformer use does not resolve possible grounding, certification, warranty, returns, or local support issues. Confirm that the exact regional model is suitable before importing it.
Who should consider it?
The dispenser makes the most sense for:
- Large households that regularly make multiple hot drinks
- Offices and shared kitchens
- Users who want hot water held at beverage-friendly temperatures
- People who value measured dispensing and repeatable routines
- Homes at higher altitude that can benefit from boiling-point adjustment
It is a poorer fit for:
- Single users who normally need only one cup
- Anyone seeking a lightweight, cordless, portable kettle
- U.S. buyers with only standard 120V outlets
- People who require a local warranty and readily available replacement parts
- Users who need water purification rather than heating and dispensing
- Kitchens without room for a large, heavy countertop appliance
Verdict
Xiaomi’s 5-liter appliance is an interesting smart hot-water dispenser, not simply an oversized kettle. Its measured dispensing, adjustable temperature holding, altitude-aware boiling, and app-based custom modes could be useful in a busy household or office. The claimed 18-minute full-tank boil is plausible for a 1,600W heater, but it remains Xiaomi’s test result and will vary in practice.
For international buyers, the headline speed should come second to the basics: verify the 220–240V requirement, confirm Xiaomi Home compatibility in your region, check warranty and parts support, and plan for descaling and regular water turnover. For many U.S. households, those limitations make a local conventional kettle or thermal dispenser a more practical choice.
