If your TV has a power light, startup sound, or audio but the screen is blank, it may not be a total power failure. The most common causes are a wrong input, a failed HDMI connection or external device, a temporary startup problem, or a fault in the backlight, display electronics, power system, or panel.
The quickest test is to press Home or Menu with every HDMI device disconnected. If the TV’s own menu appears, the display is probably working and the problem is more likely the source, cable, port, receiver, or input selection. If no menu appears after a proper power cycle, a TV-side fault becomes more likely.

First, confirm what “turning on” means
A lit standby indicator only shows that the TV is receiving some power; it does not prove that startup has completed or that the video system is working. Check whether you can hear startup sounds, menu sounds, or program audio; see a brief logo or screen flash; change the volume; or get a response from Home, Menu, or Input/Source.
Press Home or Menu before changing settings. This separates a TV display problem from an external-source problem more quickly than repeatedly pressing the power button.

Try these steps in order
- Disconnect every external device. Remove cable or satellite boxes, consoles, streaming devices, Blu-ray players, AV receivers, soundbars, HDMI switches or splitters, USB devices, and antenna or coaxial connections where relevant.
- Turn off and unplug the TV. Disconnect the HDMI devices, unplug the TV from the wall, and wait at least 60 seconds. This is the interval specified in current TCL guidance; exact restart procedures vary by model.
- Reconnect the TV directly to a known-working wall outlet. Bypassing a power strip, surge protector, or switched outlet helps rule out an outlet or power-accessory problem.
- Turn it on using the TV’s physical button or remote. Test the Home/Menu screen before reconnecting anything.
- Test a built-in app or tuner. If the TV menu and built-in content work, the TV itself can display an image and the fault is probably external.
- Reconnect equipment one device at a time. This can identify a failed device, HDMI-control conflict, receiver, soundbar, switch, or splitter.
Do not rapidly unplug and reconnect the TV. Also avoid assuming that a universal “hold the power button for 30 seconds” procedure applies to every brand. Physical-button resets and remote restart methods differ by model and software version.
When the TV menu works but HDMI does not
If the Home screen appears but a cable box, game console, streaming stick, or other HDMI source is blank, the TV is probably not the primary problem.
- Press Input, Source, or the equivalent button.
- Select the HDMI port physically connected to the device.
- Confirm that the external device is powered on and fully awake.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try another HDMI port on the TV.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable.
- Bypass any soundbar, AV receiver, switch, or splitter and connect the source directly to the TV.
- Test the source on another display if one is available.
A loose or damaged HDMI connection can result in audio without video in some situations, so sound from a source does not automatically prove that its video connection is healthy. If a console is the only failing device, its output resolution or HDR mode may also be incompatible with the TV’s current connection; testing it on another display can help isolate that possibility.

If built-in apps work but a cable box does not, focus on the cable box, HDMI cable, receiver, and selected input. If one HDMI port works while another does not, the issue may be port-specific or related to that port’s configuration.

Diagnose the symptom
| What you see | What it suggests | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| TV menu works, but an HDMI source does not | Source, cable, port, receiver, or input problem | Test the input, device, cable, and direct connection. |
| Audio works but there is no picture | HDMI/video path, backlight, or display-system problem | Test Home/Menu, built-in content, and the flashlight test. |
| A logo appears, then the screen goes black | Software, backlight, power, or display hardware | Power-cycle with all devices removed; seek service if it persists. |
| No menu, audio, or visible image | Startup failure or TV-side hardware fault | Check the outlet and power-cycle; contact support if there is no change. |
| A faint image is visible with a flashlight | Possible LCD backlight or backlight-driver failure | Arrange a diagnosis rather than opening the TV. |
| Only one device fails | External device or connection | Test another cable, port, or display. |
| Every source fails | TV-side fault is more likely | Check warranty and arrange manufacturer or authorized service. |
Try the flashlight test carefully
This test is mainly useful for LCD/LED televisions. In a darkened room, turn on the TV and open a menu or play a source if possible. Shine a bright flashlight obliquely across the screen and look closely for faint text, shapes, or a picture.
- Faint image visible: the TV may be generating video but not illuminating the panel, making a backlight or backlight-driver fault possible.
- No image visible: the problem could instead involve the input, main board, panel electronics, or display panel.
The flashlight test is only a clue; it does not prove that the backlight is defective or identify every internal failure. It is also not a universal test for OLED televisions, which do not use a conventional LED backlight. Do not open the TV based on this test.
Check picture settings only when menus are visible
If the menu is visible but the picture is extremely dark, open the picture settings and try a different picture mode. Disable an extreme energy-saving or screen-off mode, restore picture settings to default, and compare the menu with video playback. Settings such as brightness, contrast, and backlight can affect a picture that is visible but unusually dark. Do not change settings blindly when the TV’s own menu, logo, or image cannot be seen.

A factory reset may help with a persistent software or configuration problem, but it will not repair a failed backlight, power board, display circuit, or panel. Try input checks, HDMI disconnection, cable and port testing, a complete power cycle, and any visible picture or self-diagnostic test first.

A reset can erase picture and network settings, remove saved preferences, sign you out of streaming apps, and require Wi-Fi and account setup again. TCL specifically advises trying other troubleshooting steps first. Use the reset path for your exact model rather than a generic button combination.

Menu names, indicator behavior, button locations, HDMI-control options, and reset procedures vary between models and software versions.
- Samsung’s black-screen troubleshooting includes source selection and guidance relevant to One Connect Box models.
- Sony’s support guidance covers no-picture, power-reset, blinking-indicator, and HDMI issues for BRAVIA models.
- TCL’s no-picture guidance varies across Roku TV, Google TV, and Fire TV platforms.
For LG, Hisense, Vizio, Philips, Panasonic, and other brands, search the manufacturer’s support site using the exact model number. Do not assume that a reset method for one platform applies to another.

Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if the menu never appears after isolation and power cycling, the screen repeatedly flashes and goes dark, the power indicator blinks abnormally, or the flashlight test reveals a faint image. Record the model number and any indicator-light pattern; do not infer a universal error code from the color or number of blinks.

Repair is more reasonable when the TV is new or under warranty, briefly shows a logo or image, has a likely backlight fault, or otherwise works normally. Replacement may be more practical when the panel is cracked, the TV is older and out of warranty, parts are difficult to obtain, or a local estimate approaches the cost of a comparable replacement. There is no reliable universal repair-price threshold: screen size, model, location, diagnosis, and parts availability all matter.
A replacement HDMI cable can be a sensible purchase only after the TV menu, another source, or another port points toward a connection problem. A streaming device will not help if the TV cannot display its own Home/Menu screen. A power strip is not a repair; testing directly from a working wall outlet is the useful diagnostic step.
Do not open the television unless you are qualified. Internal power components can retain dangerous electrical charge, and removing a large or wall-mounted screen can cause injury or panel damage.
