The Xiaomi Face Recognition Smart Door Lock X launched in China in September 2022 with 3D structured-light facial recognition, fingerprint access, PIN entry and smart-home integration. It was not a confirmed global or U.S. launch. Xiaomi later introduced the China-market Smart Door Lock G500 on May 15, 2026, adding a doorbell camera and indoor display. For homeowners, the crucial questions are not only how the facial recognition works, but whether the lock fits the door, works with local Xiaomi services and has usable warranty and emergency support.

Which Xiaomi lock does the headline describe?
The wording most directly refers to the Xiaomi Face Recognition Smart Door Lock X, the model reported in 2022. It should not be confused with the newer Smart Door Lock G500. The G500 is a later product in Xiaomi’s range, not a successor that Xiaomi has explicitly identified as replacing the X.

The X combines several unlocking methods:
- 3D structured-light facial recognition
- Fingerprint recognition
- Password or PIN entry
- Bluetooth and Mijia/Xiaomi app control
- Reported Apple HomeKit-related control
Xiaomi reported that the lock projected approximately 31,000 infrared structured-light points, could recognize a face in about one second and store up to 50 faces. It also reported an error rate of 0.0001%. These are manufacturer-reported figures, not results from an independent test.

IP65 rated and BHMA tested for security, durability, and finish.
The reported battery capacity was 6,250 mAh, with Xiaomi estimating approximately six months of operation. Actual endurance depends on scan frequency, camera use, temperature, network activity and the number of people using the lock.
Reported physical specifications included support for doors approximately 40–120 mm thick and lock dimensions of about 411 × 77 × 26.3 mm. The reported recognition positioning range was based on users approximately 1.3–2 metres tall, which may matter for children or wheelchair users.
What 3D structured-light recognition means
A structured-light system projects a pattern of infrared points onto a face. Sensors measure how that pattern returns from the contours of the face and use the result to create a depth-aware representation.

That differs from ordinary 2D camera matching, which primarily compares a flat image. Depth information is designed to make simple photo or video spoofing more difficult. It does not mean the lock is impossible to fool, nor does it guarantee reliable operation in every condition.
Hats, masks, sunglasses, glare, darkness, an obstructed sensor or an unusual viewing angle can all affect recognition. Fingerprint and PIN access remain important fallback methods.

The newer Xiaomi Smart Door Lock G500
According to the reported China launch, the G500 arrived on May 15, 2026, with a reported price of CNY 2,799. Its main distinction is that it combines AI 3D structured-light facial recognition with a much broader entry and monitoring system.
Reported features include:
- AI 3D structured-light facial recognition
- Fingerprint, permanent-passcode, temporary-passcode, Bluetooth and NFC access
- Ten reported unlocking methods in total, subject to confirmation in the full Chinese manual
- Integrated video doorbell and security-camera functions
- 2.3-megapixel camera
- 160-degree ultra-wide field of view
- Indoor display for viewing the entrance
- Viewing through compatible smart displays or televisions
- AI intended to reduce false alerts from pets and wild animals
- Up to three days of free cloud storage, as reported at launch
- HyperOS Connect support
The reported power system uses a 5,000 mAh battery pack plus four AA batteries, with an estimated runtime of approximately eight months. That figure should not be compared directly with the X’s six-month estimate because the hardware and test conditions differ.
The G500’s camera makes it more than a biometric lock, but it is not automatically equivalent to a dedicated outdoor security camera. Door-mounted cameras face their own limitations involving lighting, mounting height, field of view, privacy and weather exposure.

Installation and door compatibility matter more than the biometric feature
A smart lock is not a universal replacement for a deadbolt or mortise lock. Before buying an imported Xiaomi lock, check:
- Lock-body type: identify the existing mortise, deadbolt or multipoint mechanism.
- Door thickness: compare it with the exact model’s permitted range.
- Backset and faceplate: measure the distance from the door edge to the cylinder or spindle and compare the lock-body dimensions.
- Interior clearance: confirm that the inside panel will not interfere with trim, glass, handles or nearby walls.
- Hooks and multipoint hardware: unusual security mechanisms may not be supported.
- Door construction: glass, double doors, some iron doors and special security doors can be excluded by Xiaomi’s compatibility requirements.
- Local installation: verify that an installer can fit the lock and that replacement parts are available.
Xiaomi’s Automatic Smart Door Lock installation information illustrates how detailed these checks can be. Its requirements should not be assumed to apply identically to the X or G500, but they show why a product photo and stated door thickness are not enough to confirm compatibility.

Privacy and security considerations
Biometric data
Facial recognition adds biometric data to the normal risks of PINs, Bluetooth connections and cloud-connected accounts. Xiaomi’s broader facial-recognition privacy statement says face data is processed locally and not uploaded to the cloud. That statement should be read narrowly: it does not by itself prove that the X or G500 uses identical storage, processing or retention practices.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Camera and cloud data
The G500 has a materially different privacy profile because it includes a camera, doorbell and reported cloud-storage allowance. Confirm what is stored locally, what is sent to Xiaomi’s services, how long alerts and clips remain available, whether cloud features are region-dependent and what happens after any free storage period.
Mechanical security and emergency access
Face recognition does not compensate for a weak cylinder, lock body, strike plate, door frame or poor installation. Also confirm the exact emergency-power and mechanical-entry procedure from the model’s official manual. Do not assume that every Xiaomi lock has the same keyway, USB power option or battery-access arrangement.
Network failure may disable remote alerts and video viewing even if local fingerprint or PIN entry continues to work. Account-region restrictions, Chinese-language setup and China-only cloud services are additional risks for imported units.

The available evidence supports China-market availability, not a confirmed worldwide launch. The current global Xiaomi smart-lock catalog lists the Self-Install Smart Lock and the Automatic Smart Door Lock, but not the facial-recognition X or G500.

An importer or marketplace may offer one, but that is not the same as official regional availability. Before ordering, confirm:
- the exact model number and Chinese or global variant;
- app language, account-region and cloud requirements;
- local electrical, radio and privacy requirements;
- door and lock-body compatibility;
- replacement batteries and parts;
- warranty, installation and return arrangements;
- what happens if Xiaomi discontinues China-only services.
Do not convert the historical CNY prices into a supposed U.S. retail price. Shipping, import taxes, installation, gateways, cloud services and return shipping can substantially change the total cost.
More practical alternatives
For buyers who want Xiaomi integration without importing a facial-recognition model, the globally listed Self-Install Smart Lock offers fingerprint, PIN, virtual-password and app control, along with reported Matter and Wi-Fi support. It does not provide face unlocking, and compatibility with the existing cylinder still needs to be checked.
The globally listed Automatic Smart Door Lock focuses on automatic operation, fingerprint access, PINs, NFC, Bluetooth and Xiaomi ecosystem features. Some remote notifications and automations require a Bluetooth gateway, which may be sold separately.
For many homeowners, a locally supported fingerprint/PIN lock—or a conventional smart lock paired with a separate video doorbell—will offer easier installation, clearer warranty coverage and more predictable emergency support.
Verdict
The Xiaomi Face Recognition Smart Door Lock X was a genuine China-market 2022 product, not a confirmed U.S. launch. Its 3D structured-light system is designed to improve depth sensing and resist basic spoofing, while fingerprint and PIN entry provide practical alternatives.
The newer G500 is the more feature-rich model, adding a camera, doorbell and indoor display, but those additions also bring greater privacy, account, cloud and installation complexity. Unless Xiaomi officially introduces either facial-recognition model in your market, most U.S. homeowners should favor a locally supported fingerprint/PIN lock over an imported unit.
