The product behind this headline was the Children’s Sonic Toothbrush K5, a 2019 crowdfunded toothbrush from Soocas, a Xiaomi-associated home-appliance startup. Its unusual feature was a bear-shaped speaker base that played a story lasting about two minutes—the intended length of a brushing session.
This is a historical product story, not a new 2026 launch. The original report was published on August 14, 2019, and the available evidence does not establish that the K5 remains officially available or supported.

What was Xiaomi’s Children’s Sonic Toothbrush K5?
The K5 was designed to make toothbrushing more appealing to young children. According to the contemporary report from Gizmochina, removing the toothbrush from its bear-shaped stand started an approximately two-minute story. The idea was to turn a routine children often resist into a short, predictable story-time activity.
Although the headline described it as Xiaomi’s crowdfunder, the product was identified as a Soocas toothbrush offered through Xiaomi’s crowdfunding ecosystem. That does not necessarily mean Xiaomi manufactured or directly branded the toothbrush.

How the story-based design was supposed to work
The K5’s main behavioral concept was simple: the story would occupy roughly the recommended brushing period, encouraging the child to keep brushing until the audio ended. The toothbrush also reportedly connected to the Xiaomi Mijia app, allowing parents to track brushing habits.
Those features may have helped with routine-building, but they should not be confused with proof of better oral health. A two-minute story does not guarantee that a child cleans every tooth surface, and the available report did not provide clinical evidence that the K5 reduced plaque, cavities, or brushing errors.

What does “sonic” mean?
Here, “sonic” refers to a high-frequency electric toothbrush whose head vibrates rapidly. The reported rate of 31,000 vibrations per minute is a motor specification, not evidence that the brush cleans better than a manual toothbrush or another electric model.
Sonic should also not be treated as synonymous with ultrasonic. The K5 report described a sonic electric toothbrush and did not establish ultrasonic operation or clinical validation.
Potential advantages for parents
- More appealing routine: The bear speaker and story could make brushing feel like a game or daily ritual.
- Two child-oriented brush heads: The reported 3–6 and 6–12 age ranges suggest an attempt to account for different mouth sizes.
- Pressure response: The report said vibration strength could adjust according to how hard the child pressed.
- Habit tracking: Mijia connectivity could give parents routine data if the app worked in their region.
- Alternative to manual brushing: Some children may prefer the sensation and novelty of an electric brush.
Limitations that matter more than the headline
The K5’s most important drawbacks are practical rather than cosmetic. The available evidence does not confirm an international retail launch, current stock, replacement-head supply, app-region compatibility, language options, charging compatibility, or warranty coverage outside China.
Rank #3
- Interactive free app educates and gets kids excited about brushing exciting rewards for successful brushing sessions
- Keep track of your kids brushing time/frequency via parents section of the app add rewards to motivate
- 98 percent of parents say it`s easier to get kids to brush longer and better
- Patented sonic technology with 500 strokes per second 75 percent more effective than manual toothbrushes in hard to reach areas for better check-ups guaranteed
Anyone considering an imported or second-hand unit should verify all of the following before paying:
- Whether the seller is offering the genuine K5 model.
- Whether compatible replacement heads are still available.
- Whether the Mijia app can be used in the buyer’s country and language.
- Whether the story content is localized or understandable to the child.
- Whether the charger is suitable for the local electrical system.
- Whether the warranty and return policy apply internationally.
- Whether the brush and speaker base remain supported.
“Water resistant” also does not automatically mean that the speaker base can be immersed. Because no precise IP rating was given in the cited report, users should follow the original manufacturer’s cleaning instructions rather than treat the entire system as waterproof.
Questions parents should consider
Pressure adjustment may help a child who brushes aggressively, but it is not a substitute for supervision. Younger children may still need an adult to guide brushing, check the result, and replace a head that has been bitten, damaged, or excessively worn.
Rank #4
- Rotating Power Head reaches, surrounds, and thoroughly cleans multiple surfaces
- Raised center-row bristles help clean chewing surfaces
- Extra-soft bristles clean as gently as a soft manual brush
- Compatible with the Disney MagicTimer App by Oral-B to help kids brush longer starting today
- Makes brushing fun by featuring Marvel's Spiderman characters
A child with braces, sensitive gums, enamel defects, oral surgery, or another dental concern should be guided by a dentist instead of relying on generic product claims. Likewise, if a child dislikes the story or finds the speaker distracting, the K5’s signature feature could become a nuisance rather than a benefit.
If the app stops working, the toothbrush should be judged as a standalone device. App tracking is useful only if the core brush remains practical without it.

How it compares with current children’s toothbrushes
The K5 was inventive for 2019, but its story-and-app concept is no longer unique. Philips Sonicare for Kids currently markets children’s models with Bluetooth connectivity, coaching-app support, progress tracking, rewards, two-minute guidance, stickers, and age-oriented options. Its official U.S. product presence and documented accessories make ongoing support easier to assess than with an older crowdfunded import.
Best Value
- SmarTimer and KidPacer keep kids brushing for 2 minutes
- Kids create their own personal pet design with fun, reusable stickers
- 2 intensity settings for a gentle clean
- Sonicare technology helps prevent cavities
- Gentle pulsing action reaches deep between teeth and along the gum line, so kids get the best possible clean while they are still learning to brush.
The Philips Sonicare for Kids HX6341/02, for example, is listed with two modes, a rubberized brush-head design, one brush head, and a KidTimer that gradually builds brushing time toward two minutes. Availability varies by market and model.
Xiaomi also introduced a separate Mijia Kids Electric Toothbrush Pro in March 2026. That newer product was reported with a display, brushing-zone guidance, pressure detection, app tracking, age-oriented modes, IPX8 protection, USB-C charging, and a claimed 90-day battery life. It is not the same product as the 2019 Soocas K5.
Verdict
The Children’s Sonic Toothbrush K5 was a clever behavioral-design experiment: it paired a child-sized sonic brush with a bear speaker and a two-minute story to make brushing easier to complete. The reported pressure adjustment, age-specific heads, app tracking, and 219-yuan crowdfunding price made it an interesting 2019 gadget.

Treat the specifications as reported or claimed, not independently proven, and do not buy an old or imported unit without confirming replacement heads, app support, charging, warranty, and returns. For a current purchase, an actively supported children’s toothbrush with readily available accessories is the lower-risk choice.
