Xiaomi’s Youpin platform crowdfunded a sink-mounted kitchen food-waste disposer in China on June 23, 2018. The appliance was listed at 1,499 yuan—described at the time as approximately $231—and was reportedly manufactured by Viomi. It was expected to ship on August 4, 2018.
That announcement is historical, not evidence of a product currently available from Xiaomi. It also does not establish U.S. electrical certification, plumbing compatibility, warranty support, or safe use with every sewer or septic system.

Despite the broad “waste processor” wording, this was a conventional sink-mounted food-waste disposer. Food scraps entered through the sink opening, were mechanically ground, and were intended to leave through the household drain.
It was not a countertop food-waste dryer, which removes moisture; a biological composter or digester; or a municipal food-waste collection system. The distinction matters because grinding food and sending it into wastewater creates different plumbing, maintenance, environmental, and regulatory considerations from separating scraps for composting or centralized treatment.

GizChina reported that the unit was installed beneath the kitchen sink and operated with a wireless wall-mounted remote.
How the reported design worked
The launch coverage described a four-stage grinding mechanism driven by an AC induction motor. It also reported that the design did not use exposed cutting blades. When the mechanism encountered an obstruction, the motor could automatically reverse or “flip” at high speed, while overheating protection was intended to shut the unit down under excessive thermal load.

Automatic reversing can help release some obstructions, but it does not make every hard, fibrous, greasy, or oversized item suitable for a disposer. Overheating protection is also a safeguard—not a promise of unlimited continuous operation.

The $231 figure was the original article’s approximate conversion of the yuan price. It should not be treated as a current exchange-rate equivalent, import cost, or present retail price. The August 4 date was an expected shipping date; available research does not confirm that fulfillment occurred.

What waste did it claim to handle?
The launch report specifically mentioned chicken bones, watermelon rind, eggshells, and other food particles. These should be understood as reported marketing claims rather than independently verified performance.
In practical installation terms, small soft scraps are not equivalent to large bones. Stringy vegetables and fibrous peels can contribute to jams, while grease and cooking oil can cool and accumulate in drain lines even if the disposer can grind them. Non-food objects should never be treated as acceptable feedstock.
The available material does not include the appliance’s complete waste-compatibility list, motor rating, torque, flow rate, or installation manual. A contractor or homeowner should therefore avoid specifying this historical product on the assumption that its advertised list covers every kitchen waste condition.
Xiaomi product or Viomi product?
The most accurate description is a Xiaomi Youpin ecosystem product reportedly manufactured by Viomi. It was marketed through Xiaomi’s crowdfunding and e-commerce platform, but that does not necessarily mean Xiaomi designed and manufactured the appliance entirely itself.

Viomi has disclosed that it sells products through Xiaomi Youpin, supporting the broader platform relationship. That corporate disclosure does not independently verify this unit’s final fulfillment, current availability, or continuing support.
Why the plumbing context matters
A disposer’s ability to pulverize food is only one part of whether it is suitable for a building. The resulting material still enters the wastewater system. That can create problems where drain lines are undersized, poorly vented, already restricted, or connected to a septic tank with limited capacity.

- Drain blockages: Ground food can accumulate in slow or poorly configured plumbing.
- Leaks: An incorrect sink flange, gasket, discharge connection, or trap installation can leak inside the cabinet.
- Septic loading: Added solids and organic material may be unsuitable for some septic systems.
- Grease buildup: Grinding does not remove fats and oils as a wastewater concern.
- Noise and vibration: The original report supplied no independent measurements.
- Odor: Residue can remain in the grinding chamber, splash guard, or drain.
China’s national policy has addressed separate kitchen-waste management and restrictions on improper disposal. A 2018 State Council opinion addressed separate handling and prohibited direct disposal into public waters, public toilets, or ordinary household-waste facilities in the contexts covered by that policy (official policy text).
China’s current national standard listing identifies GB/T 22802-2024, Household food waste disposers, effective October 1, 2024. The standard replaced GB/T 22802-2008, but its existence does not prove that this 2018 Xiaomi/Viomi model complied with the newer standard (standard record; official listing).

Local requirements can be stricter. For example, Zhejiang food-waste rules address separate collection, oil-water separation, centralized treatment, and conditions for certain on-site treatment systems (local rules). Rules vary by location, building type, sewer authority, and whether the property uses municipal wastewater or a private septic system.

A 1,290 ml chamber and stainless-steel interior may sound useful, but they do not reveal whether the appliance fits a particular sink assembly, clears the cabinet, delivers adequate discharge performance, or can be repaired after a failure.

This is best treated as a historical June 2018 Xiaomi Youpin crowdfunding announcement. The researched material does not verify a current official Xiaomi product page, live stock, an international-market listing, a model number, a successor, or ongoing support for the unit.
Readers looking for a current disposer would need to compare presently supported products separately. Established category manufacturers include InSinkErator, Moen, and Waste King; their current suitability still depends on local installation conditions and wastewater rules.
