Xiaomi launched the Smart Door Lock 2 Face Recognition Version in China in July 2024. The 1,899-yuan reported pre-sale model adds 3D structured-light face recognition, an AI-equipped smart peephole camera, automatic locking and Mijia/HyperOS Connect integration. It should not be confused with the standard Xiaomi Smart Door Lock 2 or the later Smart Door Lock 2 Pro.
What Xiaomi launched
The product is a face-recognition edition of Xiaomi’s Smart Door Lock 2 family, rather than evidence of a worldwide release. Launch coverage reported a Chinese pre-sale price of 1,899 yuan on July 9, 2024. Xiaomi’s China product listing identifies the model, but the available evidence does not establish a current U.S. price, international retail launch or local installation support.
The headline upgrades are contactless 3D face unlocking, a camera-equipped “smart cat eye,” a fully automatic lock body and Xiaomi smart-home automation.
3D face recognition: convenience, not a security guarantee
The lock uses reported 3D structured-light facial recognition. Invisible light is used to capture facial information, allowing a user to unlock the door without touching the reader. Xiaomi and launch coverage also describe 3D anti-spoofing protection intended to resist photo and video attacks.

- MORE WAYS TO ENTER: Hands full of groceries? This keyless entry door lock recognizes when you’re home and unlocks automatically. For everyone else, there’s a keypad, full smartphone and Apple Watch control, or a backup key if all else fails.
- CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: This electronic door lock puts home security in your pocket - connecting directly to 2.4 or 5 GHz Wi-Fi without a hub or bridge. Lock up, let someone in, and get real-time alerts with the Yale Access app (US & Canada Only).
- UNLIMITED CODES, TOTAL CONTROL: No more hiding spare keys. Give the dog walker Tuesday access, your parents a permanent code, and your Airbnb guest entry that expires at checkout. Share, schedule, or revoke access in seconds.
- STOP WONDERING IF YOU LOCKED UP: DoorSense knows when your door is fully closed and Auto-Lock secures it for you. Head to bed, rush out the door, or chase after the kids — your smart front door lock handles the details so you don't have to worry.
- ENGINEERED FOR RELIABILITY: Grade 2 certified by BHMA, the industry standard for commercial-grade durability. Built to perform from -22°F winters to 140°F summer heat. Low-power alerts let you know when batteries are about to run out.
That claim should be treated as a manufacturer feature claim, not independent proof of biometric security. The available coverage does not provide false-acceptance or false-rejection rates, independent liveness testing, penetration testing or certification for this exact model. Structured light is a sensing method; it does not automatically guarantee that a lock is more secure than every fingerprint or keypad alternative.
Face unlocking may be particularly convenient for households with children or adults who find fingerprint readers difficult. It can also fail in practical situations, including masks, helmets, unusual lighting, incorrect positioning or significant changes in appearance. Keep another access method available.
AI smart peephole camera
The reported “smart cat eye” combines a 2.3-megapixel camera with a 160-degree viewing angle. Its stated capabilities include:

- AI-based human detection;
- reduced false alarms caused by pet movement;
- micro-light full-color night vision; and
- remote visitor monitoring through Xiaomi’s app.
This camera can help a homeowner check who is outside, receive an alert when a person is detected and view the doorway in low light. Human detection is not the same as identity recognition: the camera classifies apparent human presence, while the separate facial-recognition system is used for unlocking. Pet filtering and night-vision performance should be regarded as reported capabilities rather than independently tested results.
Unlocking methods
According to launch coverage, the lock supports a broad set of entry options:
- 3D face recognition;
- fingerprint;
- fixed passwords;
- virtual-position passwords, which help conceal a code among extra digits;
- temporary passwords;
- cyclic or recurring passwords;
- Bluetooth;
- NFC card;
- a compatible Xiaomi phone;
- a Xiaomi watch or bracelet; and
- an emergency mechanical key.
Multiple methods matter more than the headline biometric feature. A fingerprint reader or face sensor may be unusable when a user is wearing protective equipment, the phone battery is dead or the sensor fails. Temporary and recurring passwords can be useful for guests, cleaners or contractors, but the owner should confirm how they are created and revoked in the applicable Mi Home app.

Automatic locking and construction considerations
Xiaomi describes a self-developed, fully automatic lock body with noise-reduction features. The intended result is automatic locking when the door closes, reducing the chance that a household leaves the entrance unsecured.
Automatic locking is not suitable for every household. It can be inconvenient when people frequently carry materials through the doorway, move in and out during construction work or need the door to remain unlatched. It also makes accurate installation important: a warped door, poorly aligned strike plate or unsuitable mortise can prevent the bolt from extending correctly.

- door thickness, material and opening direction;
- mortise and lock-body dimensions;
- strike-plate and cylinder compatibility;
- the local emergency-key standard;
- whether qualified installation is available; and

The standard 2023 Smart Door Lock 2 was reported to reduce operating noise by approximately 12–13 dB, but that figure should not be assigned to the Face Recognition Version without a matching specification.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HyperOS Connect
The Face Recognition Version is reported to support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, with Mi Home/Mijia app functions for lock notifications and status management. HyperOS Connect can link door events to compatible Xiaomi automations—for example, switching on lights after unlocking or closing curtains when the homeowner leaves.
“HyperOS” here refers to ecosystem connectivity and automation. It does not mean the lock runs the same complete operating system as a Xiaomi phone. Xiaomi’s HyperConnect documentation says supported devices and functions can vary by region, device and software version. A China-market lock may require a China-region Mi Home account, Chinese-language firmware or China-based cloud services. Confirm those requirements before purchase.

Before installation, confirm:
- whether facial data is stored locally, in the cloud or both;
- whether face unlocking can be disabled while other methods remain active;
- how temporary passwords are revoked;
- who can access camera alerts;
- what still works during a Wi-Fi outage;
- whether remote monitoring or remote unlocking is supported;
- how long records are retained and in which jurisdiction; and
- whether recording a shared hallway complies with local privacy rules.
These questions are especially important in apartments, shared homes, rental properties and multi-tenant buildings. Obtain consent from household members before enrolling biometric data.

The standard model’s historical price and reported noise-reduction figures come from coverage of the 2023 lock. The Pro is a separate model; its reported specifications should not be merged with the Face Recognition Version. See separate Pro coverage for that distinction.
Failure points to plan for
- Dead battery: The product is reported to include a mechanical emergency key, but the external emergency-power procedure for this exact version needs confirmation from the manual.
- Wi-Fi outage: Local entry methods may continue, while remote notifications and monitoring may not. Confirm the exact offline behavior.
- Bluetooth unavailable: Phone-based access can fail if Bluetooth is disabled, the phone is uncharged or authorization has been lost.
- Face-recognition failure: Use fingerprint, password, NFC or the mechanical key as backup.
- Automatic relocking: Door sag, warping or poor alignment can interfere with bolt operation.
- Regional lock-in: App, firmware, cloud, installation and warranty support may be China-specific.
Should you buy or import it?
The lock is most compelling for Xiaomi users in China who want touch-free entry, a built-in visitor camera and Mijia automation. It is less attractive when biometric privacy, straightforward local servicing or compatibility with an existing Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa or Matter installation is the priority; the supplied sources do not verify those integrations for this model.
For a U.S. or other international buyer, the 1,899-yuan figure is only the original reported Chinese pre-sale price—not a current U.S. price or confirmed global MSRP. Treat the official China listing as a product reference, not proof that the lock will fit a local deadbolt or work with a local Xiaomi account. Check door measurements, mortise format, installation, emergency access, app region, warranty, returns and privacy requirements before importing.
