Xiaomi launched the Mijia M40 Sweeping and Mopping Robot in China on September 28, 2024. It combines a manufacturer-rated 12,000Pa suction system, HyperOS Connect, LDS laser navigation, a mop-washing and drying dock, and two retractable mechanical arms designed to clean closer to walls and corners.
China launch pricing was RMB 2,999 for the water-tank version and RMB 3,398 for the automatic water-supply version. No verified official U.S. or worldwide launch for this specific M40 model was found, so overseas buyers should treat it as a China-market product rather than a globally supported Xiaomi vacuum.

What makes the Mijia M40 different?
The M40’s main feature is its pair of retractable cleaning arms:

Xiaomi describes the result as millimeter-level edge cleaning and says the mechanisms completed 500,000 retraction-cycle tests. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently verified long-term or cleaning-performance results.

Cleaning and dock features
The M40 has a headline suction rating of 12,000Pa. Pa is a maximum pressure or suction specification, not a direct measurement of how much dirt the robot will collect in a home. Actual pickup depends on airflow, brush design, floor type, debris size, cleaning mode, and brush-to-floor contact. Suction alone also does not determine how well the robot handles hair.
Reported cleaning and dock features include:
- Anti-tangle main and side-brush systems.
- Mop washing using water heated to 70°C.
- Hot-air mop drying in approximately two hours.
- Automatic dust collection with dual air channels.
- A dust bag advertised to last up to 75 days, depending on use.
- A 4-liter independent water tank on the water-tank configuration.
“Up to 75 days” is an ideal-use maximum, not a guaranteed interval. Homes with pets, heavy shedding, frequent cleaning, or substantial dust may require more frequent replacement and dock maintenance. Hot-water washing and drying can reduce manual mop care and odor, but the dock is not maintenance-free: users still need to clean tanks, trays, filters, brushes, and wheels.
Navigation, obstacle avoidance and smart-home control
The M40 uses LDS panoramic laser navigation for 360-degree home scanning. Launch specifications also list S-Cross wide-area structured-light obstacle avoidance, a 110-degree sensing field, and claimed obstacle-crossing capability of up to 20mm.

A 20mm rating should not be treated as a guarantee that the robot will cross every threshold or rug edge. Results can vary with the obstacle’s shape, width, surface, approach angle, and wheel traction. Structured-light avoidance may reduce collisions, but it does not eliminate the need to remove cables, toys, clothing, and other small objects from the floor.
Through Xiaomi’s Mijia app and HyperOS Connect, reported controls include scheduling, restricted or no-go areas, room- and floor-specific cleaning, and carpet or hard-floor preferences. XiaoAI voice control is also reported. App features, language, firmware, servers, voice assistants, and account-region requirements can differ by market.

The plumbing model can reduce routine refilling and emptying, but it needs compatible connections, installation space, leak protection, and a suitable permanent location. The water-tank model is simpler to install but requires regular manual water handling. The quoted prices are China launch prices; they are not U.S. retail prices and exclude shipping, taxes, import costs, warranty limitations, and reseller margins.

Availability outside China
The M40 launch was specifically in China on September 28, 2024. No verified official U.S. or worldwide product listing for the original M40 was found. Xiaomi’s official pages for M40-compatible accessories and the newer M40 S do not establish that the original M40 has launched globally.

An imported unit may require a China-region Xiaomi account or server and could involve Chinese-language packaging, different firmware, limited voice-control support, uncertain voltage compatibility, and restricted warranty or repair service. Buyers should also confirm that dust bags, mop pads, brushes, filters, and other consumables are available locally. A reseller listing is not proof of official regional availability.

Connected robot vacuums also collect mapping and device data. Before importing the M40, review Xiaomi’s applicable privacy documentation, account-region requirements, and data-handling terms.
Who should consider the M40?
The M40 is most relevant to China-region Xiaomi users who want automated mop washing and drying and are particularly interested in the extendable edge-cleaning mechanisms. It is less suitable for buyers who need official local warranty coverage, English-language support, easy replacement parts, a small dock, or a proven independent performance record.
For buyers elsewhere, Xiaomi’s officially supported products in their own region—or competing vacuums with documented local service—may be the safer choice. Compare warranty, app compatibility, consumables, dock size, installation requirements, and independent test results rather than relying only on suction or edge-cleaning claims.
Bottom line
The Mijia M40 is an ambitious China-market robot vacuum mop whose retractable side-brush and mop arms are its defining hardware feature. Its 12,000Pa suction, automated dock, and HyperOS integration make the specification sheet notable, but the claims are largely manufacturer-reported and the original M40’s official global availability remains unverified. For international buyers, regional support and import practicality matter as much as the cleaning hardware.
