X-FAB announced a groundbreaking on October 5, 2026, for a new cleanroom at its Erfurt, Germany, site. The €127.4 million figure is public funding from Germany’s federal government and the state of Thuringia—not the facility’s total investment, which the State Development Corporation of Thuringia puts at around €300–400 million.
What X-FAB is building in Erfurt
The Fab4Micro project is an expansion of X-FAB MEMS Foundry GmbH’s Erfurt site. The planned facility is a Microsystems Fab for wafer-level production of MEMS and heterogeneously integrated systems. X-FAB describes heterogeneous integration as combining multiple electronic and optical functions in one component.
PORR, the construction contractor, specifies approximately 3,500 m² of cleanroom production area and an attached office wing. These are announced project specifications; the groundbreaking marks the start of construction, not a completed facility. PORR’s project announcement gives the construction period as July 2026 to July 2028. X-FAB’s June grant announcement targets initial production by the end of 2028.
What the €127.4 million covers
X-FAB reports that Germany’s federal government and the Free State of Thuringia are providing €127.4 million in public funding for Fab4Micro. The company breaks that amount down into an approximate €80.3 million federal contribution and a €47.1 million contribution from Thuringia. The State Development Corporation of Thuringia separately reports an overall capacity-expansion investment of around €300–400 million; that estimate is distinct from the grant amount.

X-FAB says the European Commission approved the funding in December 2025 and frames the project within the European Chips Act, whose stated aim is to strengthen Europe’s technological independence in semiconductors. That is the policy rationale for the support, not a guarantee that one facility will secure European semiconductor independence. X-FAB’s funding announcement describes the grant and project plans.
Why the cleanroom is being expanded
X-FAB says Fab4Micro will add capacity for highly integrated microsystems and photonics, including MEMS and heterogeneous integration. MEMS combine electronic, sensing and mechanical elements at micro- and nanometer scales; examples of their use include smartphones, vehicles and medical devices. X-FAB identifies automotive, industrial and medical demand as drivers, and also points to data centers and optical systems as potential applications for high-performance microsystems.

The project is part of X-FAB’s plan to develop Erfurt into the group’s microsystems hub. X-FAB describes itself as a specialty foundry serving automotive, industrial and medical markets. Its October announcement lists six wafer fabs across Malaysia, Germany, France and the United States, and names analog/mixed-signal technologies, microsystems, photonics and wide-bandgap products among its areas of expertise. Construction schedule and cleanroom demands
PORR says it was awarded planning and construction of the new factory. Its stated project duration runs from July 2026 to July 2028, while X-FAB has announced initial production by the end of 2028. Those dates describe the published schedule and production target; they do not establish that construction or production milestones have already been met.

Cleanrooms require construction coordination beyond ordinary production space. PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said, “Reinräume stellen ganz besondere Anforderungen an Planung und Bau” (“Cleanrooms place very special demands on planning and construction,” writer’s translation). PORR’s account discusses vibration control, reliable continuous operations, coordination among trades and high safety demands as general cleanroom-construction considerations, not as confirmed project-specific design specifications for Fab4Micro. The State Development Corporation of Thuringia says around 100 highly qualified jobs are planned at the new facility. It also reports that more than 70 companies operate in the state’s semiconductor and microelectronics industry.

The planned roles should not be read as a net increase of 100 jobs at the Erfurt site. MDR reported that site CEO Gabriel Kittler said older products will be phased out and that the roughly 100 project jobs would not fully offset jobs expected to decline. MDR’s report provides that employment qualification; the available figures do not state a precise net change.
