When will lane closures begin on the Fort Hill Bridge?
The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) announced on October 5, 2026, that crossover construction was scheduled to begin Tuesday, October 6. This work is intended to prepare for lane closures planned for January 2027. The October announcement gives the agency’s schedule at that time; it does not confirm that the October work began or that later milestones have occurred.
The bridge, also called the Eugene A. Carter Memorial Bridge, carries Interstate 64 across the Kanawha River in Charleston, West Virginia. WVDOT said it carries nearly 100,000 vehicles daily. The agency describes it as part of an east-west interstate corridor connecting traffic from Missouri to Virginia and a route used by Charleston-area commuters. WVDOT said crews would build two crossovers so traffic can be moved to one side of the bridge during the main rehabilitation work. The announced locations are:

The crossover construction was planned for nights and weekends, using fast-lane closures. WVDOT described the work as removing existing concrete barriers, patching pavement, and installing temporary barriers. These preparatory closures are distinct from the larger traffic shifts planned for deck replacement.
How will traffic move during deck replacement?
WVDOT’s announced sequence divides the deck replacement into two stages. In early 2027, traffic was planned to move to the eastbound lanes while crews replaced the westbound side. After that work, traffic was to shift to the westbound lanes while the eastbound half was replaced.

The announcement does not specify the duration of each stage or provide a day-by-day closure calendar. Motorists should use WV511 for current conditions rather than treating the announced phases as a real-time traffic notice. WVDOT directs travelers to wv511.org or the WV511 Drive Safe mobile app for traffic conditions and travel updates.

WVDOT said Triton Construction Inc. was awarded a $74,500,000 contract in June 2026 to replace the bridge deck. The October announcement described the bridge as built in 1975 and 51 years old. The agency expected the project to finish by spring 2028; that is a forecast from the announcement, not confirmation of the eventual completion date.

State Transportation Secretary Todd Rumbaugh called the rehabilitation WVDOT’s top priority for the Charleston area and said the agency was working with project partners to limit impacts on travelers and provide a safe work zone. He also described the bridge as one of West Virginia’s most heavily traveled structures and said the project was important to preserving it.
