What is being built at Oletebes?
The reported 100,000-cubic-metre Oletebes tank is the main storage element of a larger water-supply scheme, not the whole project. Water News Kenya reported on October 6, 2026, that an adjoining tank with a capacity of 500 cubic metres is designed to generate delivery pressure. The outlet did not establish that smaller tank as additional main storage; the two structures have distinct reported roles.
No primary engineering document confirming either tank’s capacity, dimensions, or design was available in the cited reporting. The figures should therefore be understood as specifications reported by Water News Kenya, rather than independently confirmed technical data.
What is the status of the Kipkaren Water Supply Project?
Uasin Gishu News reported that Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Julius Korir inspected the project, including Oletebes Tank, on October 3, 2026, and placed overall project completion at 80%. The report was published October 4. This percentage describes the wider project as reported at that inspection; it is not a separately measured completion figure for the tank alone, nor does it establish the project’s status after that date.

The Standard’s September 7, 2026 report said work had resumed after procurement and the signing of a new contractor. A September Uasin Gishu News search result gave an earlier 75% completion figure, but the underlying article was not available among the sources cited here, so that number is not independently substantiated here. The October report is the later documented progress snapshot.
How the tank fits into the wider project
Uasin Gishu News describes a conventional treatment plant, a rising main and storage as components of the project. The rising main is the conveyance link that carries treated water onward through the system; storage and pressure infrastructure then support delivery. The project is therefore a connected treatment, transmission and storage scheme rather than a stand-alone tank construction.

Published water-output figures refer to different measures. Uasin Gishu News reported a treatment-plant capacity of 24,375 cubic metres per day. The Standard reported that the project was expected to add 23,000 cubic metres of water daily. A plant’s stated capacity and a project’s expected incremental supply are not interchangeable, and the cited reports do not reconcile the difference.
Which areas are expected to benefit?
Uasin Gishu News lists Kapseret, Eldoret International Airport, Racecourse, Upper Elgon View and Langas in Uasin Gishu County, and Mlango, Lelmokwo and Mosoriot in Nandi County, among areas expected to receive improved supply. The Standard reported that about 50,000 residents were expected to benefit.

The Standard described the project as a KSh 1.3 billion partnership between Kenya’s National Government and the African Development Bank. In the same September 2026 report, it put Eldoret’s water demand at 53,000 cubic metres per day and existing supply at 39,000 cubic metres per day. Those figures are the newspaper’s reported context; they are not independently reconciled system measurements.
