What the Shennü Grand Escalator is—and what its dimensions mean
Wushan, in Chongqing, is built on steep land above the Yangtze River. Its urban districts occupy different levels, and Shennü Avenue links important destinations across that slope. The name “Shennü Grand Escalator” describes a connected transport corridor along the avenue, not a single escalator machine stretching from bottom to top.

Chongqing’s municipal government reports a route of about 905 meters. The municipal housing and urban-rural development commission gives the vertical rise as 242.14 meters, which its report compares to the height of an 80-story building. That is an official analogy, not a surveyed equivalence to a particular building. The 905 meters refers to the route as a whole, not the length of one escalator unit.
The local authority describes a system comprising:
- 21 escalators
- 8 elevators, including accessible elevators at pedestrian bridges
- 4 moving walkways
- 2 pedestrian bridges
- 2 crossing passages
The project uses steel trusses with concrete foundations. The local construction report also says high-strength laminated glass was used for the enclosure to withstand mountain wind loads. These details help explain why the system is better understood as substantial urban infrastructure than as a single escalator installed on a hillside.

Why Wushan needed a route like this
Before the project, the Shennü Avenue corridor included a route of 1,136 steps. The Chongqing housing and urban-rural development commission reports that a trip which could take nearly an hour on the old stair route takes about 20 minutes using the new system. Those are official descriptions and estimates, not results from a published timed travel study.
The change is about more than convenience for visitors. In a city where steep slopes separate everyday destinations, replacing a long stair climb with a linked system of escalators and lifts can make movement between levels easier for residents. The commission reported more than 10,000 passengers on the first morning of testing, a figure that indicates substantial initial interest but does not establish typical daily use.

How the project took shape
According to the local construction authority, officials initially shortlisted 12 approaches, including rail, rack rail and escalators, before selecting an escalator-based solution. The choice places moving equipment within the existing urban corridor while using multiple kinds of connections to follow the terrain and bridge crossings.
The result is not simply a scenic object placed on a slope. Its sequence of escalators, elevators and walkways addresses the practical problem of connecting parts of a stepped city. Local officials have also suggested that the project may support tourism, but that is a forecast rather than a measured tourism outcome.

What riders can see along the way
Official descriptions say riders can see Wu Gorge, the Yangtze River and Wushan County from the route. Those views give the infrastructure a scenic dimension, but they do not change its primary function as a connection through the city. Travelers should treat sightseeing as a possible bonus and check local conditions rather than assume every segment offers the same view or access.
Testing, fare and visiting information
Public testing began on February 12, 2026, according to the later local reports. People’s Daily Online reported a paid trial from February 17, 2026 through February 16, 2027, with a one-way fare of RMB 3. The report said schedules differed by season and school calendar. These are dated trial details, not a guarantee of the fare, operating status or hours on a future visit.

Before making a trip specifically to ride the system, check current notices from Wushan or Chongqing authorities for service status, access arrangements, hours and price. An earlier February 10 government article mentioned an expected opening, but subsequent reporting provides the clearer sequence: testing started February 12 and paid trial service was reported from February 17.
Is it really the world’s largest outdoor escalator?
The sources cited here establish the route’s reported length, rise and component count, but they do not independently verify a world-record ranking. The “world’s largest” label is therefore not a confirmed comparison in this account. It is also important to compare like with like: Wushan’s 905-meter figure describes a multi-part route, so it should not be treated as the length of one escalator or compared directly with a single escalator elsewhere.
