Many ordinary handheld power tools can be used with a pacemaker when they are in good condition, properly wired, used as intended, and kept at least 6 inches (15 cm) from the implanted device. Medtronic lists drills, circular saws, grinders, routers, sanders and similar tools as “minimal risk” at that separation. Keep larger bench-mounted tools farther away, and get individualized advice before welding or using equipment outside ordinary handheld work.
How far should a power tool be from a pacemaker?
| Situation | Medtronic distance guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Listed handheld electric or battery tools | At least 6 inches (15 cm) from the pacemaker | Use the tool normally, keep it in good working order and follow the tool and device manuals. |
| Bench-mounted or free-standing tools, including drill presses and table saws | At least 2 feet (60 cm) | Guidance applies to examples with motors up to 400 horsepower; the exact setup and device model still matter. |
| Gasoline-powered tool ignition components | At least 12 inches (30 cm) | Measure from the ignition-system components, not simply from the tool’s handle. |
These are manufacturer recommendations, not a guarantee for every pacemaker, lead configuration or tool model. Your implanted device’s current manual and your cardiology or device clinic’s advice take priority.

Which common tools are generally acceptable?
Medtronic’s electromagnetic-compatibility guide labels the following as minimal risk when the 6-inch separation is maintained:
- Battery- or electric-powered drills and screwdrivers
- Circular or skill saws and reciprocating saws
- Handheld grinders and routers
- Sanders
- Electric hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, leaf blowers and weed trimmers
- Electric chainsaws
- Soldering guns
The American Heart Association also lists electric drills, saws, routers, sanders, hedge trimmers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers and electric lawn mowers as equipment that can potentially interfere with pacemakers or ICDs. That does not make them universally forbidden; it means distance, equipment condition and the specific implanted system matter.
#1 Best Overall
- Lightweight design fits into tight areas
- High performance motor delivers 300 unit watts out (UWO) of power ability completing a wide range of applications
- High speed transmission delivers two speeds (0-450 & 1,500 rpm) for a range of fastening and drilling applications
- 1/2' single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength. Ergonomic handle delivers comfort and control
How to use corded and battery tools more safely
- Check the device instructions. Look up the pacemaker model’s electromagnetic-interference guidance or ask the device clinic if you cannot identify it.
- Keep the separation. Position the motor, body and power head at least 6 inches from the implant for listed handheld tools. Do not brace a running tool against your chest.
- Inspect the tool. Do not use damaged cords, loose plugs, exposed wiring or malfunctioning switches. Medtronic states that tools should be in good working order, properly wired (including a three-prong plug where applicable) and used as the manufacturer intended.
- Use ground-fault protection. Plug corded equipment into a GFCI/GFI outlet or use a portable GFCI device where appropriate. A GFCI helps protect against electric shock; it does not shield a pacemaker from electromagnetic interference.
- Control the work area. Keep cords, rotating parts and kickback hazards managed so that moving away quickly is possible if you feel unwell.
What about bench tools and shop equipment?
For equipment such as air compressors, drill presses, fixed grinders, pressure washers and table saws, Medtronic specifies 2 feet of separation for motors up to 400 horsepower. Stand outside that distance while the motor is running whenever practical, and account for where the motor and electrical components are located rather than measuring only from the workpiece.
If your machine, motor size or installation is unusual, ask the device clinic before use. The published distance is guidance for specified equipment, not a universal clearance for every industrial installation.

Welding requires separate precautions
Medtronic advises avoiding welding currents above 160 amps because they may be more likely to temporarily affect normal device function. It recommends discussing welding with your heart doctor even below that level. For welding below 160 amps, its precautions include:
- Work in a dry area and wear dry gloves and shoes.
- Keep at least 2 feet between the welding arc and the implanted device.
- Keep welding cables close together and routed away from the device.
- Place the welding unit about 5 feet from the work area.
- Stop if you feel symptoms and seek advice from your cardiology team before resuming.
Medtronic says aprons or vests do not effectively shield a pacemaker from welding electromagnetic energy. Because welding current, equipment layout and duty cycle vary, do not rely on a generic “safe” distance without confirming your specific setup.

Can you use a chainsaw?
Medtronic gives different precautions for electric and gasoline chainsaws:
- Electric chainsaw: keep the motor at least 6 inches from the pacemaker and ensure it is properly grounded.
- Gas-powered chainsaw: keep ignition-system components at least 12 inches away.
A chainsaw also creates a serious secondary-injury risk if dizziness or lightheadedness occurs. If either symptom starts, stop cutting, turn the saw off, move away and get medical advice before using it again.

What should you do if you feel dizzy or lightheaded?
- Stop the tool immediately and move away from it.
- Secure the work area so the tool cannot restart or injure someone.
- Sit or lie down if needed and follow your clinician’s instructions for urgent symptoms.
- Contact your device clinic or cardiologist promptly, especially if symptoms recur, you faint, feel palpitations or receive an ICD shock.
Do not continue working to “test” whether the sensation passes. With saws, grinders, chainsaws and other rotating equipment, losing balance can cause injury even if the device interference is brief.

The American Heart Association notes that electromagnetic-interference effects depend on field strength, frequency, distance, device type and programming, and lead type and position. A distance that is reasonable for one implanted system may not cover another. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute says properly working household appliances are usually safe but identifies welding machines as a possible interference source and advises telling healthcare professionals that you have a pacemaker.
Best Value
- 1/2inch Cordless drill/driver with high performance motor produces 280 unit watts out for completing a variety of applications
- 2speed gearbox with speeds of 0350/01, 500 for speed of fastening
- 1/2inches Keyless chuck for fast and easy bit changes
- Led light improves visibility in dark work areas
- Included 20V max Lithium battery with high performance cells provides ample runtime and increased performance
Medtronic’s tools guidance carries a February 2018 identifier, and recommendations can vary by region, model and later device updates. Use the current instructions for your own pacemaker rather than treating a general internet list as a personal clearance.
When to contact your device clinic before using a tool
- You plan to weld, especially above 160 amps or with an unfamiliar welding system.
- The tool is industrial, unusually powerful, fixed in place or outside the listed examples.
- You cannot maintain the recommended distance because of the work position.
- The equipment is poorly grounded, damaged, modified or intermittently malfunctioning.
- You have had recent device surgery, a lead problem, symptoms during tool use or a device alert.
The Bottom Line
For most routine construction and workshop tasks, a pacemaker does not automatically rule out power tools: keep listed handheld tools at least 6 inches away, fixed tools about 2 feet away, and gasoline ignition components 12 inches away. Treat welding as a special case, stop immediately for dizziness or lightheadedness, and confirm unusual work with your cardiologist or device clinic.
