To finish shaped woodworking parts cleanly, sand profiles to match the smoothness of flat surfaces, plan access before assembly, and apply finish in controlled, light passes. Curves and recesses need methods that fit their shape: the wrong backing can leave ridges, and too much finish can collect in corners.
How to sand profiles without leaving marks
Work systematically so shaped areas and flats are prepared to a comparable smoothness. For reachable flat surfaces, use a random-orbit sander and begin with the highest grit that still removes machine marks. WOOD Magazine’s general guidance is to finish most jobs at 180 or 220 grit, then hand-sand the flats with the grain at that same grit to remove swirl marks. These are general recommendations, not requirements for every wood or finish system. WOOD Magazine

Match the backing to the contour
For profiles the sander cannot reach, choose backing that conforms to the shape. Your fingers can back sandpaper on many curves, but keep pressure even: gaps between fingers can create ridges. Abrasive sponges or foam pads can help distribute pressure; profile pads, detail sanding tools, or sandpaper wrapped around shop scraps such as dowels can reach narrower details.

On an end-grain round-over, use a loose piece of sandpaper in a shoeshine motion. This helps avoid cross-grain scratches and flat facets that can show after finishing. In especially tight or awkward spots, a card scraper or small paint scraper may be more suitable than sandpaper. WOOD Magazine also describes making miniature scrapers from discarded hacksaw or bandsaw blades.

Clear dust before staining or coating
After the final sanding step, remove dust from profiles and corners with compressed air, then wipe the surfaces with a soft cloth. Dust left in a recess can interfere with an even finish.
How to reduce uneven stain color
Sand all parts and sections to comparable smoothness. Uneven preparation can contribute to inconsistent stain color, particularly on shaped surfaces where hand sanding and machine sanding meet. Maple and pine can absorb stain unevenly; open pores in oak can hold pigment and make the result look darker or less uniform.

For woods prone to blotching or pigment buildup, WOOD Magazine suggests considering stain over sealer, wood conditioner, or gel stain. These are options to evaluate with the stain and finish system you are using, not a guarantee of a uniform result. The article gives one example of contours sanded with 320-grit abrasive and sealed with a thin shellac coat before staining; that is an example, not a universal grit or recipe.
Not every apparent color shift on a curved part is a stain problem. Reflection, shadow, and glare can make a contoured surface look uneven; inspect it under consistent light before trying to correct the color.

When to stain parts before assembly
Decide whether the project is easier to stain and finish as separate parts or after assembly. Deep recesses and hard-to-reach corners may be easier to coat while parts are loose. If staining separate parts, keep glue-joint areas clear—for example, mask them—so finish does not interfere with the joint.
Pre-staining door panels can also prevent an unstained strip from showing if seasonal wood movement shifts a panel within its frame. Consider access and movement together when choosing the sequence.

How to brush finish into curves and corners
Use an angled light to make missed spots and finish buildup easier to see. Foam brushes can suit flat areas; quality bristle brushes are useful for contours and fine details. WOOD Magazine recommends synthetic bristles for water-based finishes and natural bristles for oil-based finishes. Choose the narrowest brush that can still cover the area efficiently, such as an angled sash brush for a raised-panel corner.
Work around a turned profile
Load the brush more lightly than you would for a flat surface. Brush around the profile rather than along the grain so less finish runs off raised areas and pools in crevices. Lay the finish on and keep moving; repeatedly brushing a fresh area can leave brushstrokes.

Reach a panel corner without leaving a pool
Do not start by loading finish directly into the corner. Begin nearby, unload some finish away from the corner, then reverse direction to spread a controlled amount into it. If finish collects in a crevice, wipe excess from the brush on a towel and lift the surplus with the bristle tips.
If you notice a skipped area after the finish has skinned over, leave it for the next coat rather than brushing over the partially dried surface immediately.
When wipe-on finish makes sense
Wipe-on finish can reach intricate nooks without the brush drips that can collect in recesses. Apply it, then promptly remove surplus with a clean cloth before a surface skin forms. The tradeoff is film thickness: each application is thinner than a full-strength film finish, so WOOD Magazine advises expecting roughly twice as many coats. That is practical guidance from the article, not a fixed coat count for every product.
The article also gives a home-brew mixture of two parts polyurethane to one part mineral spirits. Treat that as the source’s stated recipe, not as a universally suitable formula; check the product label and compatibility before thinning any finish.
