The Chicago Cubs announced that security bollard installation around Wrigley Field is scheduled to begin Monday, October 12, 2026, and finish by Opening Day 2027. The phased work is intended to strengthen security ahead of the 2027 MLB All-Star Game. The dates are the announced schedule, not confirmation that work has started or that the completion target will be met.
What construction will affect
The Cubs’ October 8, 2026, neighbor update described restrictions on all four sides of the ballpark. Vehicle closures and pedestrian sidewalk closures differ by street, and several dates are approximate. Gallagher Way and nearby businesses are reported to remain open throughout construction, though that statement does not guarantee every approach will be unaffected.

These are the dates and impacts reported by the Cubs to neighbors; “early” and “mid” are not exact end dates. Check the City of Chicago ChiStreetWork portal before traveling. The City warns that its construction-map information may be incomplete or inaccurate and can change without notice. No specific parking, transit detour, or alternative route instructions are established in the cited announcements.

The City Council journal dated June 18, 2025, describes a Security Enhancement Project involving anti-terrorism-rated bollards in public ways and other areas around the ballpark. The scope also includes demolition, earthwork, bollard installation, sidewalk widening on West Addison Street, light-pole relocation, and related utility work. The Cubs’ neighbor notice describes the bollards as “crash-rated”; these general descriptions do not establish a technical rating or test standard.

The City journal records the team’s estimated project cost as approximately $32.1 million, excluding design fees. It describes a $12 million state grant contribution, or $12 million in city funds if the grant is not used directly for the project. Under the agreement, the team is responsible for submitting plans for City review, soliciting bids, hiring third-party contractors, obtaining required permits and approvals, coordinating phases with the City, and completing work consistent with approved plans. How the security context should be understood
The Department of Homeland Security’s SAFETY Act registry lists a Wrigley Field Campus Security Program approved February 12, 2026, with approval expiring April 30, 2031. DHS describes it as the development, implementation, and recurring review and update of a 24/7 security program at the Cubs’ campus. That listing concerns the broader venue security program; it does not establish bollard specifications or show that DHS selected or certified a particular bollard product. What visitors and neighbors should do
- Check the City’s live construction map close to your trip, since the published schedule may change.
- Allow for sidewalk closures as well as vehicle restrictions, particularly when approaching the ballpark on Sheffield, Waveland, Addison, or Clark.
- For the announced schedule and the Cubs’ statement that Gallagher Way and surrounding businesses will remain open, consult the October 8 report reproducing the neighbor notice.
