Worms or Grubs? How to Tell Which Ones Help Your Garden

Earthworms help soil; some beetle grubs damage grass roots. Learn how to identify them, inspect turf, and avoid treating a lawn based on mounds or a few larvae alone.

Worms or grubs? Earthworms are usually beneficial, while some beetle grubs feed on grass roots and damage lawns. A few grubs in soil—or a mound on the surface—does not prove there is a problem. Check the animal and the affected turf before deciding whether action is needed.

How to tell earthworms from grubs

Earthworms

Earthworms are cylindrical, segmented animals. In lawns they feed on microorganisms and partly decomposed organic matter, not grass blades or roots. Their burrowing helps air and water move through soil and supports the breakdown and mixing of organic matter. They may leave small castings or mounds, particularly after rain or irrigation. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach describes earthworms as beneficial soil organisms.

White grubs

White grubs are the larval stage of beetles and chafers. Many are pale and curl into a C-shape; some species feed on grass roots. Identifying the exact species can be difficult, and a hand lens may help. University of New Hampshire Extension discusses grub identification and management.

How to check whether grubs are damaging your lawn

Root-feeding grubs can leave turf thin or brown. Affected grass may feel spongy or lift easily because its roots have been eaten. These signs are not specific to grubs: drought, disease, compacted soil, or other insects can cause similar symptoms.

  2. Use a garden hand trowel or narrow spade to lift a small sample of turf and soil.
  3. Inspect the roots and soil for grubs. Note their number and the extent of root damage.
  4. If species identity matters, seek local extension guidance; a hand lens may help, but a C-shape alone does not identify the species.

Seeing a few larvae, adult beetles, or wildlife digging is not enough to establish that grubs are causing harm. Animals may dig for earthworms and other soil organisms, too. Maryland Extension’s white grub guidance also cautions that surface signs need interpretation: young green June beetle grubs can tunnel and push soil upward. The extension notes that, for the tunnel types it describes, “worm tunnels are pencil-thin or smaller, while June beetle grub tunnels are about the width of a finger.” This is a clue for those tunnels, not a universal identification test.

What grub counts mean—and why there is no universal cutoff

Published figures are regional turf-management guidance, not a single biological threshold that applies to every lawn. Damage risk depends on the grub species, turf type and health, local conditions, season, and the amount of damage already present.

Guidance What the source says How to use it
University of Maryland Extension; year not stated on its result page Most lawns can withstand damage to 10 to 15 percent of the grass without substantial quality loss or a need to intervene. General guidance from this source, not a universal tolerance figure. Maryland Extension.
University of New Hampshire Extension, 2019 At very high concentrations, 10 or more grubs per square foot may make treatment necessary to maintain healthy grass; turf health and other factors affect tolerance. Regional guidance, not a guarantee that a particular count requires treatment. UNH Extension.
University of Maryland Extension; year not stated on its result page Damage estimates are 6–10 grubs per square foot on bluegrass, rye, and fine fescue, and 8–15 on tall fescue. The estimates vary by turf type and should not be transferred to every lawn or region. Maryland Extension.

Use local extension advice to interpret a count alongside turf condition and confirmed damage. Do not apply a pesticide simply because a number from another region appears to match your sample.

What to do about earthworm castings

Earthworms are not turf pests, so pesticide treatment to control them is not appropriate. Castings can be a cosmetic or mowing nuisance, but their presence is not a reason to remove beneficial earthworms. If castings are troublesome, UC IPM’s earthworm guidance suggests raking them away and adjusting irrigation so the surface can dry between waterings.

When and how to manage confirmed grub damage

First confirm that grubs are present in the affected turf and use guidance for your region, grass type, and likely grub species. Management timing and suitable products vary. If using a pesticide, follow its current label and consider effects on beneficial organisms; a grub count or surface mound alone is not a treatment instruction.

UNH Extension describes beneficial nematodes as a possible option for some grub species. Its guidance emphasizes that the nematodes must be viable and suitable for the grub, applied at the right time, kept moist, and protected from intense direct sunlight. This is regional, species-dependent guidance, not a recommendation for every lawn. Check local extension advice and current product directions before choosing this approach.
