Construction began with a groundbreaking on Oct. 6, 2026, for a new VA outpatient clinic in Port Royal. Patients are expected to be accepted in spring 2028, according to same-day local reporting; Congresswoman Nancy Mace’s announcement gives the broader opening window as 2028. Neither source names an exact opening day.
When will the Port Royal VA clinic accept patients?
The clinic is expected to begin accepting patients in spring 2028, according to local reporting published on Oct. 6, 2026. Mace’s announcement on the groundbreaking says the clinic is expected to open in 2028 but does not give a season or day. The spring estimate is a projection, not a confirmed VA opening schedule.
Port Royal Mayor Kevin Phillips told the local outlet that construction was anticipated to take 18 months. That is a reported estimate, not a published contractor schedule.
Where is the new clinic?
The clinic is planned for 1844 Ribaut Road in Port Royal, near Parris Island and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. VA’s June 2025 draft environmental notice had listed the address among three candidate locations; it was background to the site review, not an opening-date announcement.

What care will it provide?
The announced service categories are primary care, mental-health services, specialty care and other VA programs. A complete list of specialties and programs has not been published in the cited announcements.
What does the project mean for current Beaufort VA patients?
The new facility is expected to replace the smaller VA clinic at Beaufort Naval Hospital. The sources do not yet explain how existing patients’ appointments will transition, when that transition will happen, or whether patients will need to take any action. Current patients should rely on direct VA notices for scheduling or transfer instructions rather than assume appointments will move automatically.

Project cost and timeline
Mace’s Oct. 6, 2026 announcement cites a $30.4 million authorization. The Island Packet described the project earlier in 2026 as costing approximately $30 million. These are attributed project figures; neither establishes a final audited construction cost.
- June 18, 2025: VA’s Office of Construction and Facilities Management issued a draft environmental assessment notice for a proposed lease-and-operate outpatient clinic and listed three candidate sites, including Ribaut Road.
- Jan. 30, 2026: The Island Packet reported VA had selected the Ribaut Road location, described the project as approximately $30 million and said the clinic was expected to open in 2028.
- Oct. 6, 2026: The groundbreaking took place. Mace’s announcement anticipated an opening in 2028; same-day local reporting cited spring 2028 for patient acceptance.
Mace’s announcement also says nearly 17,000 veterans live in Beaufort County. That figure is attributed to her office’s release; the release does not cite an underlying census or VA dataset.
