Yes—but Roomba was no longer the automatic best buy in 2024. iRobot still made sense for households that valued dependable routine vacuuming, an established parts ecosystem, or the obstacle recognition on higher-end j-series models. Shoppers who wanted fast mapping, sophisticated app controls, or a highly automated mop were often better served by comparing Roborock and Dreame models at the same price.
The right decision depended on the specific Roomba, the home and the sale price—not the name on the robot. This is a 2024 buying verdict; prices and availability mentioned below are tied to that period unless identified as later context.

What makes a Roomba worth the price?
Value means more than suction or brand reputation. A useful comparison asks whether the robot can clean the home reliably, navigate it efficiently, avoid the objects that commonly stop it, and reduce chores without adding inconvenient maintenance. Also count consumables, dock space and the app features you will actually use.
- Cleaning: Consider your mix of carpet and hard floors, pet hair, edge debris and how well the robot maintains cleanliness through frequent runs.
- Navigation: Check for room maps, multi-floor support, no-go zones, orderly routes and recovery when the robot is moved.
- Obstacle avoidance: Cords, socks, toys and pet messes can turn an unattended run into a cleanup job. Recognition features reduce risk; they do not guarantee avoidance.
- Automation: Self-emptying, water refilling, mop washing and drying are different conveniences. A model may offer one without the others.
- Ownership: Brushes, filters, bags, mop pads and batteries need attention or replacement. A robot still needs routine care even if its dock empties the bin.
Independent evidence supports a measured view of iRobot’s strengths. In a March 2024 article, Consumer Reports described iRobot vacuums as having very good reliability results and average owner satisfaction; Eufy scored better on owner satisfaction in the survey cited. Survey results describe groups of owners, not a guarantee for a particular unit or model. Consumer Reports’ reliability and satisfaction discussion is a useful counterweight to both brand loyalty and feature-count comparisons.

What Roomba still did well
Routine vacuuming and pet hair
Roomba’s dual counter-rotating rubber brushes remained a practical design strength for regular debris and pet-hair pickup. That is not proof that every Roomba outcleans every rival: performance depends on the model, floor, brush condition and test. But a vacuum-focused Roomba can be a sensible choice if the main job is frequent maintenance cleaning rather than mopping.
Obstacle recognition on j-series models
The j7 family’s camera-based obstacle recognition and avoidance was a meaningful advantage for homes with loose cables, toys or other floor clutter. The j7+ paired that feature with automatic dirt disposal. Camera-based systems can be useful for recognizing objects, while LiDAR often helps with mapping; neither technology alone guarantees that a robot will avoid every hazard. Do not treat pet-waste avoidance as certain.
An established ownership ecosystem
iRobot’s installed base, support documentation and widely available replacement parts can matter to buyers who prefer a familiar platform. This is a practical advantage, not a promise that future software support will outlast every competitor. Roomba also continued to offer vacuum-only models, so buyers did not have to pay for a mop system they would rarely use.

Mapping and route efficiency
Many Roborock and Dreame models used LiDAR mapping, while most iRobot vacuums did not. RTINGS notes the difference as a contributor to slower mapping compared with those brands. In practice, mapping approach affects how quickly a robot learns a home and how it plans routes; it does not mean every camera-based robot navigates badly or every LiDAR model is excellent. RTINGS’ iRobot overview describes the broader category comparison.

- DEVOURS DIRT WITH 70X MORE POWER-LIFTING SUCTION. 3-Stage Cleaning includes 70X more power-lifting suction*, a Multi-Surface brush, and Edge-Sweeping brush to devour dirt and dust bunnies and leave floors barefoot clean *As compared to Roomba 600 series robots
- SUPER-SMART MAPPING AND NAVIGATION. ClearView LiDAR quickly maps your home to maximize coverage and provide a precise clean while steering smoothly around obstacles and specialized sensors prevent falling down stairs.

- EASY-TO-USE ROOMBA HOME APP. Simply tap to set a custom clean, get time estimates, check on the filter life, or create keep-out zones to avoid specific areas.
Entry Roombas are especially important to distinguish from mapping models. RTINGS describes the Roomba 694 as using basic navigation without room mapping, so do not assume that every Roomba supports room-by-room cleaning or advanced no-go zones. RTINGS’ Roomba 694/690/692 review details that entry-level limitation.
App controls and mop automation
In RTINGS’ comparison, the Roborock Q7 Max+ was preferable to the Roomba i7, and Roborock’s app offered a broader feature set. That comparison supports a model-specific conclusion, not a claim that every Roborock is better than every Roomba. Shoppers who care about map editing, room and zone controls, cleaning sequence or broader automation should compare the exact app and model rather than assume brand parity. See RTINGS’ Roomba i7 comparison.
Premium rivals also made elaborate mop docks a central part of their offer, with features such as mop washing, drying and water management. Those systems suit buyers seeking frequent hard-floor maintenance with less manual work, but they take space and add tanks, pads and maintenance. A mop attachment that needs manual attention is not equivalent to a dock that washes and dries its pads.

| Model or family | Best fit | Useful strength | Trade-off | 2024 buying condition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roomba 694 and basic 600-series models | Small or simple homes needing basic vacuuming | Basic, familiar operation; can be a low-cost entry point | Some models lack room mapping and use basic navigation | Consider only at a low price if mapping and room controls are not priorities. |
| Roomba i4/i4+ Evo | Buyers seeking a familiar vacuum platform, with the “+” dock on the i4+ Evo | Established Roomba ecosystem | Less feature-rich than newer mapping and dock systems | Consumer Reports’ 2024 buying guide listed an illustrative $520 price for the i4+ Evo; this was a guide price, not a guaranteed retail price. Compare against mapped alternatives at the actual price. |
| Roomba j7/j7+ | Pets, clutter and loose floor objects | Camera-based obstacle recognition; j7+ adds automatic dirt disposal | Not the choice for buyers prioritizing premium mop automation | Most compelling when obstacle avoidance matters and the model is meaningfully discounted. |
| Roomba j9/j9+ | Premium vacuuming or, for Combo versions, vacuuming plus mopping | Higher-end navigation and cleaning features; Combo j9+ Auto-Fill has automatic water filling | Premium pricing can be difficult to justify against feature-rich rivals | Compare the exact version, dock and sale price. The current official page lists the j9+ Auto-Fill at $1,399.99 and shows it unavailable direct from iRobot; that is a current page signal, not its 2024 launch price or proof of 2024 stock. | Roomba Combo j5/j5+ and i5/i5+ | Buyers who want occasional damp cleaning in a familiar ecosystem | Combines vacuuming with a mop option; some versions add dirt disposal | More manual mop handling than a fully automated wash-and-dry dock | Best considered at a value price if light wiping—not hands-off mopping—is enough. |
| Roomba Combo 10 Max | Buyers interested in iRobot’s premium all-in-one dock | AutoWash dock washes and dries mop pads, empties debris and self-cleans | Its high launch price put it against established premium competitors | iRobot announced a $1,399 starting price in July 2024. How Roomba compared with the main alternatives
| Brand | Consider it when | Why it may beat a similarly priced Roomba | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roborock | You prioritize mapping, app controls and vacuum-mop features | Many models offer LiDAR, detailed maps and feature-rich docks; RTINGS preferred the Q7 Max+ to the Roomba i7 in its comparison. | Model-specific dock functions, footprint, price and whether you need the mop features. |
| Dreame | You want a feature-rich vacuum-mop system | Many models emphasize advanced mop systems, navigation and dock automation. | Tank and mop maintenance, dock size, app complexity and the price of the exact model. |
| Eufy | You want a more budget-conscious or simpler alternative | It offers options across lower price tiers; Consumer Reports’ cited survey found stronger owner satisfaction than iRobot’s. | Navigation, obstacle avoidance and app features vary widely by model. A low price can mean more manual intervention. |
| Shark | You find a sale-priced model with the self-emptying or mapping features you need | Frequent promotions and broad U.S. retail presence can make a particular model competitive. | Do not generalize across the lineup: check navigation, app quality and the specific dock. |
| Ecovacs, Narwal and others | A specific model matches a need such as premium mopping or a compact footprint | The wider market offers credible budget, mid-range and premium choices beyond the best-known brands. | Compare the named model’s features, support and consumables rather than relying on a brand-wide claim. |
There is no useful rule that LiDAR always beats cameras, or that higher advertised suction guarantees better cleaning. Compare independent pickup results where available, brush design, coverage, obstacle handling and the controls the specific model provides. RTINGS’ review of the Roomba 614 judged the Eufy RoboVac 11S a better choice for most uses in that comparison, illustrating why a cheap Roomba is not automatically the best value. RTINGS’ Roomba 614 review.
Who should buy a Roomba?
- Pet owners who want routine vacuuming: The rubber-brush design and frequent cleaning can be useful, especially if you do not need a mop system.
- Homes with clutter or pets’ toys: A j-series model’s obstacle-recognition feature can reduce interruptions, though it cannot promise that every hazard will be avoided.
- Buyers who value an established ecosystem: Widely available accessories and familiar support documentation may be worth a premium to a cautious owner.
- Existing iRobot owners: Familiarity or compatible accessories may improve the practical value of a replacement, provided the specific accessories work with the model.
- Deal hunters: A discounted j7+, j9+ or suitable mid-range model can be a stronger proposition than one bought at full premium price.
Who should choose another robot—or skip one?
- Choose Roborock or Dreame for mapping and automation: If fast, detailed mapping, granular app controls or an automated mop dock are priorities, compare their specific models at the same price.
- Choose a budget Eufy or sale-priced Shark for basic needs: These may make sense when a lower cost matters more than advanced object avoidance or the deepest app controls.
- Choose a vacuum-only model for mostly carpet: Do not pay extra for mopping hardware you will seldom use, and check carpet performance model by model.
- Consider no robot if the home is a poor fit: Frequent wet spills, muddy paw prints, many high thresholds, stairs, or persistently blocked floors can make any robot a frustrating substitute for manual cleaning.
Robot vacuum-mop combinations are maintenance cleaners, not reliable handlers of wet spills or muddy messes. Consumer Reports makes that category limitation explicit in later coverage; it is useful context, not a 2024 model test. Consumer Reports on robot vacuum-mop combos.

Ownership details that can change the decision
Carpets, rugs and multiple floors
Confirm whether a Combo model lifts its mop pad over carpet or requires you to set no-mop zones; the method differs by model. Thick or shag rugs and tall thresholds can challenge robots regardless of brand. In a multi-level home, check multiple-map support and remember that a robot cannot climb stairs: it must be carried, and its dock’s emptying or water features are generally convenient only on the dock’s floor.

- UP TO 75 DAYS HANDS-FREE CLEANING. Dirt and dust stay gone because it empties into the AutoEmpty dock with a bag that traps 99% of allergens as small as 0.7 microns. That means no mess or cloud of dust when you empty it. Just drop the used bag into the trash and put a new one in the base.
- DEVOURS DIRT WITH 70X MORE POWER-LIFTING SUCTION. Find, reach and eliminate messes with the combined power of 70X more suction*, multi-surface brush, 20% better edge and corner cleaning with an edge-sweeping brush, to devour dirt and dust bunnies, plus a microfiber mop pad to leave floors shiny.
- SUPER-SMART MAPPING AND NAVIGATION. ClearView LiDAR quickly maps your home to maximize coverage and provide a precise clean while steering smoothly around obstacles and specialized sensors prevent falling down stairs.
- RUGS STAY DRY WHILE MOPPING. Unlike other cleaning robots, the Roomba 105 Combo Robot automatically detects and avoids carpets while mopping so your rugs stay dry – no complex programming required.
- FULLY CUSTOM CLEANING. Choose from settings including vac only, mop only, or combo vac-mop. Schedule and target rooms based on your daily routine and adjust the number of cleaning passes, levels of suction power, and amount of mopping solution pumped onto the microfiber mopping pad.
Pet hazards and clutter
Rubber brushes can still need cleaning, and bowls, toys, cords and loose fabric can obstruct a run. A systematic map is not the same as dependable object avoidance. If accidents are common, prioritize avoidance capability, ease of cleaning and a retailer’s return policy rather than assuming any camera system is foolproof.
Mop work and dock footprint
“Mopping” can mean attaching a pad for light damp wiping, lifting a pad over carpets, or washing and drying pads at a dock. Combo owners may still need to fill or empty tanks, wash pads and prevent odors. A large automated dock reduces some chores but occupies floor space and introduces more components to maintain.
App, used units and recurring parts
Mapping and advanced controls may depend on Wi-Fi and the app; physical-button cleaning and app features vary by generation. For a used or refurbished robot, check battery condition, app support, and whether the dock, bin, charger and proprietary accessories are included. A low sticker price is poor value if essential parts are missing or costly.

The 2024 buying rule
At full premium pricing, Roomba was often not the strongest value for buyers whose priorities were advanced mapping, detailed app control or hands-off mopping. At a substantial discount, a suitable Roomba could be an excellent purchase for routine vacuuming, pet hair, obstacle recognition or an established support ecosystem. Compare the exact model and dock against alternatives at the price you can actually pay; brand recognition by itself is not a reason to spend more.
