Choose a shelf-pin drilling jig by matching its drill-bore size to your shelf pins, then checking its setback and how it registers for the cabinet you’re drilling. Kreg, Milescraft, and Rockler offer documented options with 32 mm hole spacing, but their bit configurations, access, and indexing methods differ. Product specifications below come from manufacturer pages; they are not independent accuracy or durability tests.

What size shelf-pin holes do you need?

Match the jig and bit to the shelf-pin diameter you intend to use. The models described by their manufacturers use either 5 mm or 1/4-inch drilling components. Those sizes are not interchangeable: choose compatible pins and drilling components as a set, and check the exact configuration before buying.

All four product descriptions below specify 32 mm (1-1/4-inch) hole spacing. That is the distance between holes in a row; it does not determine the correct distance from the cabinet edge. Setback depends on the cabinet design, hinges, and shelf-support hardware.

Kreg Shelf Pin Jig 1/4-inch model; Kreg also lists a separate 5 mm version. 32 mm increments. Setback not stated on the cited product page. Page describes a brad-point bit, hardened-steel drill guides, an indexing pin, and a jig extension. It says a second jig can connect for a longer run.
Milescraft ShelfJig 1343 1/4-inch and 5 mm drilling components. Setback not stated on the cited product page. Page lists a depth stop and indexing pins, and replacement indexing pins and a depth stop. Confirm the included configuration and part number for the item being purchased.
Rockler Shelf Pin Drilling Jig, item 74448 1/4-inch and 5 mm self-centering bits; 32 mm spacing. 37 mm or 64 mm setback options. Rockler says the farther setback can help clear Euro-style hinge bodies. The page describes use on assembled or unassembled cabinets. Includes indexing pins for continuing the row.
Rockler Pro Shelf Drilling Jig 32 mm row spacing; hole diameter not stated on the cited product page. 37 mm setback; intended for unassembled cabinet components 8-1/4 to 25-1/4 inches wide. Provides two rows and indexing pins for extending long rows.

Specifications and included components are those stated on manufacturer pages accessed in 2026; availability and configurations can change. Check the current listing and manual for the exact model and package. Rockler’s general installation guidance describes a 37 mm edge distance with 32 mm hole spacing as a layout used with many European-style hinges, not as a universal requirement: Rockler installation guidance.

Which jig should you use?

For an assembled cabinet

Start with the standard Rockler Shelf Pin Drilling Jig if you need a manufacturer-documented option for assembled as well as unassembled cabinets. Its two setback choices can help accommodate different cabinet layouts, but verify the chosen setting against your hinges and shelf supports before drilling.

For loose cabinet sides or longer rows

The Rockler Pro is specified for unassembled components within its stated width range and makes two rows. Kreg describes an extension and the option to connect a second jig; Milescraft and Rockler describe indexing pins to continue a row. When replacing parts matters

Milescraft’s page specifically lists replacement indexing pins and a depth stop. Kreg and Rockler describe included components on their product pages, but the specifications cited here do not establish replacement-part availability for every component. Confirm parts and fit with the manufacturer before purchase.

How to drill shelf-pin holes in a straight, repeatable row

  1. Confirm the layout. Choose the shelf-pin diameter, row position, and edge setback for the cabinet and hardware. Check that the intended holes will not conflict with hinges or other fittings.
  2. Set the jig and secure the panel. Follow the jig’s manual for setup. Clamp the workpiece securely rather than holding it by hand; the Kreg Shelf Pin Jig Owner’s Manual explicitly warns that hand-holding a workpiece while drilling is dangerous.
  3. Drill the first holes using the manual’s instructions. Kreg’s manual says to bring the drill up to speed before the bit contacts the wood. Follow the instructions for your specific jig and drill; do not assume another model uses an identical procedure.
  4. Extend the row with the jig’s indexing method. Register the indexing pin in the preceding hole as directed, keeping the jig seated consistently before drilling the next position. For Kreg’s extension, the manual says not to use the extension as a drill guide.
  5. Check the first holes before repeating the layout. Test the selected shelf pins in the holes and confirm the row’s position and clearance before drilling additional panels. Repetitive drilling can heat the bit; Kreg’s manual notes that it may be hot after use.

What the specifications do—and do not—tell you

Manufacturer pages establish stated dimensions, features, and intended uses; they do not show that one jig is more accurate or durable than another. No independent head-to-head performance comparison is established here. For a buying decision, prioritize compatibility with your pins, the setback your cabinet needs, whether the jig can reach the panel, and a reliable way to continue the row.
