Yes—a Wi‑Fi relay can operate a garage door, but it must imitate a brief button press rather than hold a circuit closed. The correct connection depends on whether you have a conventional opener wall-button input or a spare radio remote. A relay with isolated, normally-open dry contacts can be wired across a compatible wall-button input, or across the two switch contacts on a spare remote. Proprietary digital systems, including many Chamberlain and LiftMaster Security+ 2.0 openers, require a compatible adapter, controller, or remote-emulation method instead of an assumed short circuit.

Identify what you are actually controlling

“Garage-door remote controller” can mean three different devices:

  • Opener wall-button input: a wired push button or console connected to the motor unit.
  • Spare RF remote: a handheld or visor transmitter whose button sends the opener’s normal rolling-code radio command.
  • Purpose-built smart controller: a product such as Meross MSG100/MSG200 that combines a signal interface, Wi‑Fi and a door sensor.

These interfaces are not interchangeable. A relay only closes electrical contacts; it does not generate a garage-door radio code. When connected to a spare remote, the remote’s own battery and transmitter remain responsible for the RF command.

Choose the control method

Method Best use Advantages Limitations
Relay across spare RF remote Proprietary or uncertain opener interfaces Preserves the opener’s normal RF command and avoids decoding its wall-control bus Requires PCB modification, battery maintenance and a separate door sensor
Relay across wall-button terminals Documented, simple low-voltage contact input Existing wall button can remain in parallel; wiring is straightforward May fail on digital or proprietary wall controls
Purpose-built controller Users wanting guided setup and status sensing Usually includes a sensor and compatibility workflow Model compatibility, accessories, cloud dependence or local-control limits must be checked

For a Chamberlain, LiftMaster or Craftsman opener with a digital wall console or Security+ 2.0 labeling, do not assume that shorting two terminals will work. Shelly documents separate Security+ 2.0 diagrams using a Garadget adapter: Shelly’s garage-door wiring guide. Meross also provides a model-specific compatibility checker and warns against shorting terminals when their identity is uncertain: Meross compatibility checker.

Parts and tools

  • Wi‑Fi relay with isolated, normally-open dry contacts, such as a Shelly Plus 1.
  • A compatible spare remote if direct wall-terminal wiring is unsupported.
  • Fine insulated wire, soldering equipment, heat-shrink tubing or insulating tape.
  • Multimeter with continuity or resistance mode.
  • Suitable nonconductive or approved electrical enclosure, strain relief and mounting hardware.
  • Magnetic reed, tilt or purpose-built door-position sensor.

The Shelly Plus 1 uses L and N for device power, offers a 12 V power option, and exposes isolated relay contacts at I (common) and O (output); SW is the local switch input. Its relay architecture and potential-free output are described by Shelly at Shelly Plus 1 documentation and terminal reference. The relay contacts are not a power supply. The module must be powered separately, and the target circuit must connect only through the isolated contacts. Shelly’s wiring caveat is documented at Shelly relay wiring guidance.

For applicable U.S. installations, use the listed version and follow enclosure and wiring requirements. Shelly’s UL-certified product page showed $21.49 for one unit on August 16, 2026; price and availability can change: Shelly Plus 1 UL-certified.

Method 1: wire the relay to a spare RF remote

This is usually the most adaptable approach when the opener’s wall-control protocol is proprietary.

Let it to be more long-lasting and stable to use. There are 3 terminals(normally open pin, common pin, normally closed pin) for the relay. This is a potential-free contacts relay. Passive output. Dry contacts. The relay is cean. The receiver is suitable for DC 5V or DC 7V~48V voltage, so DC 5V/ 12V/ 24V/ 36V/ 48V is OK.
  • 【Wide Application】Products can be used in homes, farms, factories, offices, laboratories, supermarkets and so on.You can remotely operate every device connect with the WIFI smart switch through your phone. such as, garage door opener system, electric lock, Electromagnetic door, lamp, lighting, contactor, signal transmission and DIY remote control switch.
  1. Remove the remote battery. Open the case carefully and avoid damaging the antenna or other buttons.
  2. Find the actual switch contacts. With the battery removed, use the multimeter in continuity or resistance mode. Press the target button and identify the two PCB points whose measurement changes. Do not assume one point is “ground”; many remotes use a scanned button matrix.
  3. Solder two insulated wires across those same two switch contacts. Insulate the joints and route the wires so the case does not crush them.
  4. Reinstall the battery and test the modification. Briefly touching the two wires together should activate the remote exactly as pressing the button did. If it does not, recheck the contacts, battery and solder joints.
  5. Connect the relay contacts: relay COM/I to one remote-button wire and relay NO/O to the other. The remote battery stays installed.
  6. Enclose and mount the assembly. Keep the relay’s mains or supply wiring physically separate from the remote PCB and provide strain relief.

Do not power the remote from the relay unless its voltage, polarity, current and battery behavior have been verified. Retaining the original battery is generally the least invasive arrangement.

Method 2: wire the relay to conventional wall-button terminals

Use this method only when the opener manual identifies a simple low-voltage contact input. Record the manufacturer and full model number, photograph the terminals, and note whether the wall control is a basic two-wire button or a multifunction digital console.

  1. Disconnect power as required by the opener manual and identify the two documented wall-button terminals.
  2. Leave the existing wall button connected unless the manual specifies otherwise.
  3. Connect relay COM/I to one opener terminal and relay NO/O to the other, placing the relay in parallel with the button.
  4. Keep the relay’s L/N or low-voltage power terminals completely separate from the opener’s control terminals.
  5. Restore power and test with a person observing the door.

Meross describes a temporary-wire shorting test for marked terminals, but says not to perform it if you are unsure which terminals are correct: Meross’s compatibility procedure. A yellow learn button is only a clue, not proof of a simple contact interface. Chamberlain’s model-specific wall-control pages show why the exact opener and console matter: 041A7185-1 and 041A7305-1. If compatibility is uncertain, restore the original wiring and use a compatible controller, adapter or spare remote.

Configure a momentary Wi‑Fi pulse

A garage opener expects a push-button command. Configure the relay so it is normally open, closes briefly, then releases automatically.

  1. Add the relay to Wi‑Fi according to its current firmware documentation.
  2. Open the relay-channel settings and select momentary or auto-off behavior.
  3. Start with the shortest pulse that reliably triggers the remote—commonly about 0.5 to 1 second—and increase only if necessary.
  4. Set power-on behavior to off.
  5. Disable schedules and automations while testing.
  6. Verify operation locally before enabling cloud, voice or remote access.
  7. Test a second activation to confirm the opener’s expected next action.

Firmware labels change, so verify the exact menu names for your installed version. Never use a latching toggle for a push-button input, and test behavior after a power interruption to ensure the relay cannot restore in the closed state.

Add independent door-position feedback

A relay pulse proves only that a command was sent. It does not prove that the door opened, closed, stopped or encountered an obstruction. Add a magnetic reed switch, tilt sensor or purpose-built garage-door sensor. Shelly shows a two-wire reed-switch arrangement with a Plus Add-on in its garage-door guide: Shelly sensor wiring.

Mount and test the sensor with the door fully closed, fully open and partly open. Your automation should expose Closed, Open, Opening, Closing and Unknown where possible. A disconnected or ambiguous sensor must produce Unknown, not a false “closed” state.

Safety checks before remote operation

  • Confirm the photo-eye sensors are connected, aligned and working.
  • Test the opener’s mechanical reversal procedure from its manual.
  • Use the manual release to verify that the door moves smoothly and is balanced.
  • Ensure the relay triggers the normal opener command path and bypasses no safety device, travel limit or force limit.
  • Test Wi‑Fi loss, relay reboot and power recovery.
  • Observe every initial cycle in person.

LiftMaster manuals require the Protector System safety sensors and periodic safety checks; restrictions on unattended closing vary by model and door type. Consult the applicable manual, including Model 8365W instructions and 8500W instructions. Do not enable unattended closing until the sensor, obstruction protection and deliberate confirmation policy have been verified. A child, pet, vehicle or person may be under the door when a remote command is issued.

Troubleshooting

Nothing happens when the relay activates

  • Recheck the two remote PCB contacts with a continuity meter.
  • Confirm the remote battery and pairing.
  • Verify the relay is actually closing between COM and NO.
  • Increase the pulse slightly if the remote needs more time.

The relay works, but direct wall wiring does not

The opener may use a digital bus, the terminals may be wrong, or it may require a recognized wall console. Disconnect the relay, restore the original control, and use a model-approved adapter, controller or spare remote.

The door cycles twice or behaves unpredictably

Check for a relay stuck on, an excessive pulse, duplicate automations or a power-on state of “on.” Use normally-open contacts, auto-off and power-on default off.

The door status is wrong

Relay state is not door state. Reposition or replace the physical sensor and make disconnected or conflicting readings report Unknown.

The modified remote works nearby but not at the opener

Test the remote in its final mounting position. RF range, antenna orientation, enclosure material and battery condition can all change after installation.

Which approach should you use?

Choose a purpose-built controller such as Meross MSG100/MSG200 if you want supplied sensing, guided compatibility checks and minimal soldering; review the supported models at Meross’s product page. Choose a Wi‑Fi relay plus spare remote when you need a practical workaround for a proprietary opener and are comfortable modifying a low-voltage PCB. Use direct wall-terminal wiring only after the exact opener manual confirms a simple dry-contact input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The safest DIY pattern is a separately powered Wi‑Fi relay with isolated COM/NO contacts, a short auto-off pulse, and an independent door-position sensor. Wire directly to wall-button terminals only when the opener documents a simple contact input; otherwise, emulate a spare compatible remote or install a purpose-built controller. Preserve every factory safety device and treat remote closing as unsafe until the complete installation has been tested.
