On a U-bolt wire-rope clip, put the U-bolt over the dead (short or cut-back) end and place the saddle on the live, load-bearing end. The mnemonic is “Never saddle a dead horse.” That rule identifies clip orientation; it does not, by itself, make a termination safe or suitable for a particular job.
What “Never saddle a dead horse” means
A wire-rope termination has a live end, which continues into the load-bearing part of the rope, and a dead end, the short end turned back to form an eye or termination. With a U-bolt clip, the saddle belongs on the live end; the U-bolt goes over the dead end.

The U.S. Forest Service states the rule this way: “Never orient the nuts and saddle side of the wire rope clips on the dead (cut) end of the wire rope.” It gives “Never saddle a dead horse” as the mnemonic in Rigging for Trail Work: Principles, Techniques, and Lessons from the Backcountry, Appendix A.

How to check the orientation
- Identify the load-bearing rope segment and the short end that has been turned back.
- Position the clip so its saddle bears against the live end.
- Confirm that the U-bolt bears against the dead end.
If it is difficult to identify the ends, stop and have the termination checked before loading it. Do not rely on the mnemonic as a substitute for the clip maker’s instructions or a qualified person’s design.

Orientation is only one part of a correct installation
Clip size and type, rope diameter and construction, number of clips, spacing, turn-back length, and tightening torque depend on the specific rope, clip, and application. OSHA’s Guidance on Safe Sling Use – Wire Rope Slings directs users to the clip manufacturer for spacing, number, and torque values. Follow the instructions for the exact clip model, such as the model-dependent guidance in CERTEX USA’s U-bolt clip instructions, or use a qualified person’s specifications.
The U.S. Forest Service manual likewise says to use clips and thimbles sized for the rope, follow the applicable tables for clip number, spacing, and torque, apply an operational load, and retorque. It cautions against tightening until the rope flattens or deforms. These are not universal values or a recipe for every rope-and-clip combination.

Clip-made slings have important limits
For wire-rope slings, OSHA’s safe-sling guidance calls for drop-forged steel, single-saddle U-bolt or double-saddle clips and says not to use malleable cast-iron clips to fabricate slings. It also says not to use wire-rope clips to fabricate slings except when prefabricated slings are precluded and a qualified person designs the specific application. Slings made with wire-rope clips must not be used in a choker hitch under that guidance.
Those statements concern sling use; they should not be treated as a blanket approval or prohibition for every other wire-rope application. Check the rules that govern the actual job and jurisdiction, and have a qualified person select or design terminations for lifting or other safety-critical uses.

Retightening and inspection
OSHA’s safe-sling guidance calls for clips to be tightened evenly to the recommended torque before and after initial load application, with torque checked to confirm it remains. It also calls for inspection for wear, abuse, or damage. Use the clip manufacturer’s procedure and keep the termination out of service if inspection finds damage or the assembly does not meet its specified installation requirements.
Regulatory examples are scope-specific
OSHA’s maritime auxiliary-gear regulation, 29 CFR 1917.42, requires the U-bolt section to contact the dead end where clips form eyes. It directs users to manufacturer recommendations and provides a fallback table for minimum clip number and spacing by rope diameter and material when those recommendations are unavailable. That table applies within the regulation’s scope; it is not a universal specification for other work.

An OSHA interpretation concerning suspension scaffolds discusses live/dead orientation in that specific context and separately states a restriction on U-bolt clips at the point of suspension for a scaffold hoist. Because the interpretation is dated March 4, 2004, and addresses a particular scaffold situation, check current applicable requirements rather than extending it to unrelated uses. See OSHA’s scaffold interpretation.
What the Forest Service efficiency figure does—and does not—say
The U.S. Forest Service manual says wire-rope clips are “about 80-percent efficient.” That figure is the manual’s published statement, not a rating established here for every clip, rope, installation, or application. It should not be used as a design value without confirming what applies to the specific assembly.
