The best small bathroom ideas start with the room’s fixed dimensions, door swing, plumbing and must-have fixtures. Plan for comfortable movement and daily routines first; then choose storage, lighting and finishes. Mirrors, clear shower panels and coordinated surfaces can make a room feel more open, but they do not change its actual dimensions.

Plan the layout before choosing finishes

Measure the room and note the door swing, existing plumbing and the fixtures that must stay. A plan that works on paper can still feel cramped if doors or drawers collide, or if everyday items have nowhere to go. Which? and Hansgrohe both put planning and compact fixtures ahead of decorative choices.

  1. Record room dimensions, door and window positions, and the locations of existing plumbing.
  2. Mark the bath or shower, toilet and sink you need, then check how people enter, turn and use each fixture.
  3. Look for places where a fixture, door or storage unit blocks movement; consider compact or wall-mounted alternatives.
  4. Choose finishes and accessories only after the layout and storage needs are clear.

For a room under 5 to 6 square meters, Hansgrohe says planning and furnishing become challenging based on its experience. That is a guide to when careful planning matters, not a formal size threshold or building standard. Hansgrohe’s small-bathroom planning guide

1. Replace a full bath with a shower if you rarely use the tub

A shower can free floor area when a bath is not essential. Compare that gain with your household’s routines before removing a tub; a shower-bath combination may preserve both options where the layout allows.

2. Choose a compact tub if bathing matters

Shorter baths can make a tub workable in a tight room. Which? gives 1.7 × 0.7 metres as a usual standard bath size and lists shorter alternatives of 1.5, 1.4 or 1.2 metres. These are product examples, not guaranteed local dimensions; check available products and the space they require. Which?’s small-bathroom guide

3. Consider a shower-bath combination

If a bath is a must-have but a separate shower will not fit, a shower-bath can combine the two uses. Check that the arrangement suits the room’s circulation and your needs for access and splash containment.

4. Try a corner sink

A corner sink can use an underused part of the plan and leave a clearer route through the room. Confirm that it works with the door swing, toilet position and available plumbing.

5. Look for a compact sink or slimline toilet

Which? says compact sinks and slimline toilets can start at about 30 cm wide. Treat that as a UK-oriented product observation, not a universal code dimension; verify the exact product dimensions and local clearances before choosing one.

6. Use a wall-hung sink or vanity

Exposing more floor beneath a fixture can make the floor plane read as less interrupted. A floating fixture does not create extra floor area, and it still needs suitable support and plumbing.

7. Compare a pivoting door with a sliding or folding screen

A pivoting shower door needs room to swing. A sliding or folding screen may suit a tighter circulation path, but compare the opening, access and water containment of the specific enclosure.

8. Explore a wet-room or doorless shower only if the room can handle it

An open shower can preserve sightlines, but water control depends on the room’s drainage, waterproofing and layout. Consider where splash may reach, especially near towels and toilet paper. Have the room assessed before changing waterproofing or drainage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Ask whether an adjacent cupboard or partition can be changed

Removing or altering a wall or borrowing space from a cupboard might improve the plan, but structural implications cannot be judged from an inspiration photo. Get a professional assessment before changing walls.

Use walls for storage without crowding the floor

In a small bathroom, shallow and vertical storage can put essentials within reach without adding a bulky obstacle. Choose storage around what you actually use, and leave the main route through the room clear.

10. Add a shallow shelf above the toilet

A shelf can use wall space that would otherwise sit empty. Keep it shallow enough to avoid making the toilet area feel crowded, and store items that are safe and convenient to reach there.

11. Fit a slim cabinet beside the toilet

A narrow cabinet can conceal spare supplies while using a small strip of wall. Check its depth and door swing against the available space.

12. Use the back of the door for hooks

Hooks can hold robes or towels without taking up floor space. Make sure the door still opens freely and the items do not snag or block access.

13. Add wall-mounted towel storage

Wall-mounted rails or hooks can keep towels accessible while leaving floor space open. Place them where towels can dry and where they do not interfere with the shower or door.

14. Choose a vanity with drawers for small items

Drawers make grooming products and other small essentials easier to sort than one deep, mixed cupboard. Check that the drawers can open fully without hitting the toilet or door.

15. Use open vanity shelving for items you reach often

Open shelves make frequently used items easy to grab and can feel lighter than a closed cabinet. They also leave contents visible, so containers and a simple routine help prevent visual clutter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

16. Add a tall, narrow storage unit

Vertical storage uses wall height rather than spreading across the floor. Choose a unit that does not obstruct movement or make a narrow room feel pinched.

17. Recess a medicine cabinet where construction permits

A recessed cabinet can provide storage without projecting as far into the room as a surface-mounted one. It requires suitable wall conditions; have those checked before cutting into a wall.

18. Build a shower niche if the wall allows it

A niche can hold shower products without a rack protruding into the enclosure. Hansgrohe describes niches as integrated storage that requires structural work, so confirm the wall and waterproofing details with a qualified professional before proceeding.

19. Corral small products in trays or containers

Grouping bottles and small items makes shelves and counters easier to use and clean. Keep daily essentials accessible and store occasional-use products elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

20. Keep counters clear by assigning each item a home

Use drawers, a medicine cabinet or a small tray to stop everyday products spreading across the sink. A clear counter is a visual choice, not a substitute for storage that meets the household’s needs.

Make the room feel brighter and more open

Light, reflection and uninterrupted sightlines can influence how spacious a bathroom feels. The result depends on the existing light and layout; none of these changes increases the room’s actual dimensions.

21. Add a larger mirror above the sink

A broader mirror can reflect more of the room and make the sink area feel brighter. Check its proportions against the vanity and the available wall.

22. Position a mirror to reflect a window

Where the layout allows, a mirror can redirect daylight into the room. The effect depends on the window’s position, the mirror angle and what is reflected.

23. Layer general light with task lighting at the sink

Use overall illumination for the room and focused light for tasks such as shaving or applying makeup. Exact fixture placement and electrical requirements depend on the bathroom and local rules; have electrical work planned by a qualified professional.

24. Consider a backlit mirror where wall space is tight

A lighted mirror can combine mirror and task-lighting functions without separate sconces on either side. Check that the model provides suitable light for the task and that its electrical installation is appropriate for the location.

25. Choose clear shower glass to preserve sightlines

A transparent panel can leave more of the room visible than an opaque divider. Glass does not solve a poor layout or eliminate the need to manage splashes and cleaning.

26. Hang a shower curtain high to emphasize wall height

A high-hung curtain can draw the eye upward, making the wall appear taller. Keep the curtain positioned to contain water effectively.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

27. Use horizontal lines if you want a room to feel wider

Horizontal tile or other linear details can guide the eye across a narrow room. This is a visual effect, not a guaranteed change in perceived size.

28. Use vertical lines to draw the eye upward

Vertical tile patterns or details can emphasize height. Consider how their direction relates to the room’s proportions and other finishes.

29. Keep finishes visually coherent

A limited, coordinated palette can reduce visual breaks between surfaces. That does not mean every finish must match; one deliberate contrast can provide character without making every surface compete.

Choose tile and color for the room, not by a rule

No single tile size, color or coverage pattern is mandatory for a small bathroom. Which? suggests light shades and horizontal oblong tiles, while Hansgrohe emphasizes placement and coverage over simply choosing large tiles. Architectural Digest’s examples include both light and dark schemes. Consider the room’s light, the effect you want and the practical suitability of materials in wet areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

30. Use light colors if you want a brighter feel

Light finishes can reflect more light and support an airy look. Their effect depends on the room’s lighting and the chosen materials; they are not the only valid palette.

31. Choose a dark palette for an enveloping look

Deep colors can make a small bathroom feel intentional and cocoon-like rather than trying to make it appear larger. They are a style choice, not a design mistake; consider how much natural and artificial light the room receives.

32. Compare tile scale, grout contrast and orientation

Large tiles are one option, not a requirement. Tile size, grout contrast and the direction of the pattern all affect the visual result, so compare samples in the room rather than relying on a blanket rule.

33. Consider light oblong tiles laid horizontally

Which? recommends light shades and landscape-oriented oblong tiles as one way to make a compact room feel wider. The orientation creates a visual impression, not additional width.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

34. Use smaller wall tiles when they suit the style

Small-format tiles can add texture and character. Their grout lines create a different visual rhythm from larger tiles, so consider the overall pattern and upkeep before committing.

35. Tile the wet or high-splash zones

Partial tiling can give wet areas a distinct finish without covering every wall. Use materials suited to the intended location and confirm the installation and waterproofing details for the room.

36. Extend tile strategically rather than automatically to the ceiling

Tile height changes the look and amount of finished surface. Decide based on the design, splash exposure and appropriate materials; manufacturer design advice is not a substitute for local installation requirements.

37. Use bold wallpaper in a powder room

A powder room can be a good place for a distinctive pattern or color. Check that the wallpaper is suitable for the room’s moisture conditions and keep other finishes simple enough to let it stand out.

38. Make the floor the patterned focal point

A patterned floor can add character without covering every wall in visual detail. Pair it with simpler surrounding surfaces if you want the pattern to remain the main event.

39. Choose one distinctive fixture

A notable sink, faucet or mirror can give the room a focal point. Keep the rest of the scheme restrained if you want that feature to read clearly.

40. Coordinate metal finishes if you like a unified look

Matching metal finishes across faucets, handles and accessories can create a coordinated appearance. It is a style choice, not a requirement for a successful bathroom.

41. Balance a bold color with quieter surfaces

Compare shower and storage choices before committing

These options solve different problems. A choice that improves sightlines may offer less splash containment; a closed cabinet can hide clutter but may feel more substantial than an open shelf.

Choice Potential advantage Trade-off to consider
Pivoting shower door Provides a hinged opening. Needs swing space; check that it does not conflict with other fixtures.
Sliding or folding screen Can reduce the space needed for a door to swing. Compare opening width, access and water containment for the specific model.
Clear glass panel Preserves sightlines across the room. Does not by itself address splash control, layout or cleaning.
Shower curtain Offers a flexible way to contain water. Does not provide the same uninterrupted sightline as clear glass.
Wet-room or doorless shower Can leave the shower area visually open. Requires careful consideration of drainage, waterproofing and splash reaching nearby items.
Closed cabinet Conceals stored items. Uses wall depth and may project into the room.
Open shelf Keeps frequently used items visible and accessible. Contents remain on display and need organization.
Recessed niche Integrates storage into the wall rather than projecting into the room. Requires suitable construction conditions and careful waterproofing.

Match the idea to the size of the project

Some changes are largely decorative; others alter plumbing, electrical systems, waterproofing, tile or structure. The design roundups cited here do not establish installation rules, accessibility requirements or code compliance for a particular home.

42. Refresh with hooks, trays and accessories

Repositioning towels, organizing products and changing accessories can improve everyday use without changing the layout. Confirm that any wall-mounted item is fixed appropriately for its location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

43. Repaint or update suitable wall finishes

A new color can change the room’s character without moving fixtures. Use finishes appropriate to the bathroom’s moisture and ventilation conditions.

44. Replace a mirror or add a lighted mirror

A mirror upgrade can affect both function and the way light is reflected. If it includes electrical components, installation needs to meet the requirements that apply in your location.

45. Replace a vanity only after checking clearances

A compact or floating vanity may improve the available floor area visually, but dimensions, plumbing and door or drawer movement matter more than the label “small.”

46. Treat tile replacement as a wet-area project

Changing tile can affect the layers that protect a bathroom from water. Confirm suitable materials and waterproofing details for the actual location rather than assuming a design example sets the installation method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

47. Get room-specific advice before moving plumbing

Moving a sink, toilet, bath or shower may improve the plan, but the feasibility depends on existing services and the home. Have the proposed layout assessed before committing to demolition or new fixtures.

48. Verify lighting plans before electrical work

Task and general lighting can improve usability, but the appropriate fittings and installation depend on the bathroom and local requirements. Use a qualified professional for electrical changes.

49. Check ventilation when changing finishes or layout

A bathroom’s ventilation affects how moisture is managed. Review it as part of a renovation, especially when changing finishes or enclosure arrangements; the design sources do not specify a universal ventilation solution.

50. Have structural changes professionally assessed

Altering a partition, opening a wall or creating a recessed niche can involve more than surface decoration. Confirm structural conditions and the relevant local requirements before work begins.
