Willow X is a real outdoor robot from Belgian company EEVE, but it is not yet a normal, widely stocked garden appliance. It is a four-wheel-drive mobile robot with two arms, cameras and trainable AI intended to handle light-duty jobs such as mowing, collecting debris, carrying objects, weeding and harvesting. Current EEVE material presents it as a limited-release personal robot and research platform, with a listed price signal of €8,990 rather than a straightforward mass-market purchase.

For homeowners, the important distinction is that Willow X is designed to learn several tasks instead of repeating only one job. That flexibility is also its weakness: training, supervision, changing garden conditions and uncertain availability make it a very different proposition from a conventional robot mower.

What is Willow X?

Willow X is a wheeled mobile manipulator: a robot that combines outdoor mobility with two articulated arms, grippers, cameras and onboard computing. EEVE describes it as a personal robot that can learn tasks from its owner and help maintain outdoor spaces. Its purpose is broader than cutting grass.

A conventional robotic mower is built around one relatively constrained activity: following a mapped area and cutting grass. Willow X is intended to move around a garden, recognize objects and locations, manipulate items and repeat demonstrated workflows. That makes it more ambitious than a mower, but also harder to make reliable.

It is not a full-size bipedal humanoid. Nor should it be treated as an autonomous replacement for a gardener, landscaper or farm worker. The most accurate description is a trainable, wheeled garden robot aimed at light-duty outdoor work.

What garden work is it designed to do?

EEVE’s published material and demonstrations point to a wide range of possible jobs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • mowing lawns;
  • collecting leaves and garden debris;
  • picking up fallen fruit or walnuts;
  • harvesting vegetables;
  • moving garden waste into its container;
  • weeding;
  • cleaning or vacuuming with suitable attachments;
  • carrying tools or other objects; and
  • general maintenance across lawns, patios and paths.

These should not all be read as equally mature production functions. The 2022 Willow X demonstrations included ambitious scenarios such as harvesting carrots and collecting walnuts, but reporting at the time noted that the prototype lacked some final hardware and used remote control for parts of the demonstration. New Atlas’ 2022 report is useful context for separating the early concept from the current product claims.

The sensible interpretation is that Willow X is designed to learn and repeat light-duty tasks. A gripper rated to lift up to 3 kg does not, by itself, prove that the robot can reliably identify every object, pull weeds without damaging plants or harvest delicate produce without bruising it.

How does Willow X learn tasks?

EEVE’s system is intended to avoid conventional programming. The proposed workflow is:

  1. The owner physically guides or demonstrates a task.
  2. The robot records the movement and visual context.
  3. Additional demonstrations refine the behavior.
  4. Willow X attempts the task autonomously.
  5. The owner repeats or schedules it for a particular area.
  6. Behaviors may eventually be shared through EEVE’s Task Store.

EEVE calls its control system The Force and its adaptive AI system Higgs. According to EEVE, Higgs controls both the arms and wheel motors, while training and execution take place locally on the robot rather than in the cloud. The company also says a new pioneer task may require roughly 50–70 demonstrations, an enhanced task about 5–10 demonstrations and a downloaded user-mode task approximately 1–3 demonstrations. These are manufacturer-stated expectations, not independently verified success rates. See EEVE’s Higgs information for the company’s explanation.

“No coding required” therefore does not mean “no setup required.” Owners may need to demonstrate a behavior repeatedly, supervise early attempts, remove hazards and retrain it when the environment changes. A task learned in one garden may not transfer cleanly to another with different lighting, slopes, soil, plant varieties, clutter or object shapes.

There is also an unresolved processor inconsistency. One EEVE product page refers to an “NVIDIA Orion” processor, while the research page references an NVIDIA Orin Nano. This may be a page error, a configuration difference or a change between versions. Buyers should ask EEVE to confirm the exact processor in the unit being offered rather than treating either wording as definitive.

How does it navigate a garden?

Earlier Willow products were described as using cameras, mapping and obstacle detection rather than traditional perimeter wires or GPS tracking. Current EEVE material refers to 3D cameras, AI perception, AI-driven navigation, four-wheel-drive mobility and local processing.

Vision-based navigation can reduce installation work compared with wire-based systems, but it depends heavily on what the cameras can see. Likely problem conditions include bright sunlight and shadows, wet lenses, rain or fog, tall moving vegetation, reflective paving, narrow passages, partly hidden objects, loose mulch, soft soil, gravel, tree roots, steps, curbs, low branches and repetitive-looking plants.

Children, pets, visitors and unfamiliar objects create a further challenge. A system that navigates a clear lawn is not automatically safe or reliable in a busy family garden. The earlier concept discussed a planned 25% incline capability, but that figure should not be assumed to apply to the current Willow X without confirmation.

Willow X’s prototype-to-product history

The product has changed status over time:

  • 2022: Willow X was shown as a two-armed garden-robot prototype with ambitions including mowing, harvesting and debris collection. Some demonstrations were remote-controlled or used incomplete hardware.
  • April 2025: EEVE’s storefront timeline said Willow X had learned its first training task using Lego. That is a company-reported milestone, not an independent benchmark.
  • 2025 reporting: Thomasnet described an approximately $10,000 preorder price and a 150-unit build limit while characterizing the robot as still in technical prototyping.
  • Early 2026: EEVE’s storefront referred to the next stage and an exclusive pioneer group of 150 units.
  • Current status: EEVE’s research page lists €8,990 and positions Willow X as a research and innovation platform.

EEVE says more than 3,000 Willow robots have been deployed, but that company figure relates to the broader Willow product history and does not establish that 3,000 Willow X units exist. EEVE is the Belgian company behind Willow and earlier Toadi and Willow lawn-care robots.

Can you buy Willow X now?

Availability appears limited rather than routine. EEVE’s storefront describes a selected pioneer group of 150 Willow X units rather than showing the product as a widely stocked consumer appliance. Its research page displays €8,990, but the available material does not establish normal open retail checkout, broad shipping or standard regional stock. An EEVE accessory page also states that online orders are currently unavailable.

In other words, this is better approached as an eligibility or information request than as an ordinary “buy now” product.

How much does it cost?

Published prices vary by date and product stage:

  • In 2022, planned standard pricing was reported at €4,200, with a €3,990 preorder price. A Pro version was listed at €4,900, or €4,690 for preorder.
  • In 2025, reporting put the preorder price at approximately $10,000.
  • EEVE’s current research and innovation page lists €8,990 for Willow X as a research-oriented offering.

The older figures were forward-looking plans, not current price evidence. The €8,990 figure should not be converted into a fixed US-dollar price without checking exchange rates, taxes, shipping, import charges and regional terms.

Why mowing is easier than garden manipulation

A mower can follow a relatively repeatable route while performing a repetitive action at a known height. Picking a tomato, pulling a weed or collecting a walnut requires the robot to identify the target, approach it from a useful angle, estimate its position, apply an appropriate grip and handle variations in size, moisture and obstruction.

That is why Willow X’s arms are both its main advantage and its biggest technical risk. They could make one platform useful for several jobs, but manipulation is more sensitive to lighting, occlusion, plant damage, slippery objects, changing terrain and small positioning errors than ordinary grass cutting.

“Learn any task” should therefore be understood as a goal for trainable, light-duty behaviors—not a promise of instant competence at arbitrary physical work.

Safety, privacy and outdoor conditions

Anyone considering Willow X should treat it as machinery, not as a harmless smart-home device. Keep children and pets away during training and autonomous operation, and establish safe procedures around moving arms, grippers, blades, tools and attachments. Confirm the location and operation of the emergency stop on the current model.

Because the robot uses cameras, owners should consider privacy around neighbors, visitors and public-facing areas. Ask whether footage is stored, how long it is retained, whether it leaves the robot and what warning signs or consent procedures are required. An older EEVE manual contains camera and safety-signage guidance for legacy Willow robots, but its requirements should be verified for Willow X rather than assumed to carry over unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Weather support also needs confirmation. Earlier concept material discussed rain detection and returning to base, but that should not be presented as a current Willow X feature without a current specification. Ask EEVE about its IP rating, operation in rain and wet grass, mud, snow and extreme heat, outdoor docking, and cold-weather battery performance.

Before autonomous operation, inspect the garden for steps, curbs, gates, low branches, tools, hoses, loose cables, ponds, soft ground and areas where the robot could become trapped or tip. Also ask what happens after a loss of Wi-Fi or 4G, localization failure, an unknown obstacle, a low battery or a blocked attachment.

Who is Willow X for?

Willow X makes the most sense for robotics researchers, universities, developers working on computer vision or human-robot interaction, makers and wealthy early adopters who are comfortable training and supervising an unfinished system. Its value is the opportunity to experiment with a general-purpose outdoor platform, not simply to obtain the cheapest way to cut grass.

It is a poor fit for someone who wants a plug-and-play mower, guaranteed daily maintenance, unattended operation around children or pets, dependable crop harvesting, conventional retail support or the lowest-cost garden service. A conventional mower or human landscaping service may be less flexible, but it is likely to be easier to evaluate against a clearly defined job.

What to ask before committing

  1. Is the offered unit a production Willow X, a research configuration or an earlier prototype?
  2. What tasks are currently supported with the supplied hardware?
  3. How many demonstrations are normally needed for each intended task?
  4. What independent performance or reliability data is available?
  5. What are the operating limits for slopes, rain, wet grass, mud and temperature?
  6. Does the package include a dock, attachments, safety equipment and connectivity?
  7. What service region, warranty and replacement-parts support applies?
  8. How are camera recordings handled and protected?
  9. What does the robot do when it gets stuck or encounters a person, pet or unknown object?
  10. Can learned tasks be inspected, edited, paused, deleted and restored?

Verdict

Willow X is more than a robot mower: it is a promising wheeled platform for trainable outdoor manipulation. EEVE’s current claims—two arms, local Higgs AI, four-wheel drive, cameras, a 600-Wh battery and several hours of operation—make it technically intriguing.

But the evidence does not yet justify treating it as a mature, universally available garden appliance. The €8,990 research-page price, limited 150-unit pioneer positioning, unresolved specifications and lack of independent success-rate data place it firmly in the early-adopter and research category. It is worth considering if experimentation and versatility matter more than turnkey reliability; for routine lawn care, a conventional specialist machine remains the safer comparison.
