Skip stretchy fake spiderwebs outdoors. Their synthetic strands can trap birds, bats, insects and other wildlife, and may not break easily enough for an animal to escape. Keep web motifs indoors or behind windows, and use solid decorations such as pumpkins and flat cardboard cut-outs outside instead.
Are fake spider webs bad for birds and other wildlife?
Yes. Bat Conservation International warns that artificial webbing can tangle bats and birds, leaving them at risk of starvation or exposure to bad weather. The Canadian Wildlife Federation also identifies possible danger to birds and insects. Fine, stretchy strands can catch animals moving through vegetation or across a yard.

The organizations cited here do not establish a reliable annual number or rate of fake-web entanglements. The Canadian Wildlife Federation says it is unsure how often they occur, although wildlife rehabilitators report receiving affected animals. That uncertainty is not evidence that the decorations are safe; it means the scale is not quantified by these sources.

Choose decorations that are solid or lie flat rather than creating strands, loops, mesh or open netting. BirdLife Australia lists cardboard cut-outs, pumpkins, straw, sheep’s wool, sticks, twigs and leaves as alternatives. These are suggested materials and forms, not products certified as harmless in every arrangement.

When choosing or placing any yard decoration, check whether it has fine strands, mesh, loops or open netting; whether it crosses vegetation, flight paths or animal trails; whether it can instead be placed indoors or secured as a flat, solid form; and how quickly you can remove it after Halloween. Cardboard Halloween cut-outs are one optional category to consider, but inspect the finished decoration for snag hazards and secure placement.
Where should Halloween spiderweb decorations go?
Keep stretchy fake webs indoors or behind a window rather than on trees, shrubs, fences or other outdoor structures. Bat Conservation International and BC SPCA recommend indoor placement, while Audubon advises that the simplest bird-friendly choice is not to hang fake webs outside. If you use them indoors, consider whether pets could chew or snag on them.

Can precautions make outdoor fake webbing safe?
No precaution guarantees that outdoor webbing will not catch an animal. The Canadian Wildlife Federation suggests using less webbing for a shorter time and checking it a couple of times a day. Audubon suggests thicker rope and generous gaps for people who still choose to decorate outdoors, but continues to emphasize avoiding fake webs. Audubon also cautions that even webbing placed flush against a wall can catch birds.

If you decide to keep any webbing outside despite that risk, keep it sparse and temporary, avoid likely flight routes, inspect it repeatedly, and remove it as soon as possible. Treat these measures as ways to reduce exposure—not as a wildlife-safe setup.

What should I do if an animal is caught?
- Do not pull on the animal or try to untangle it. Pulling can worsen the situation.
- Cut the webbing around the trapped area rather than pulling the animal free, following BC SPCA guidance.
- Contact a local wildlife rehabilitator or animal-care service for instructions and an assessment. Audubon notes that serious injuries may not be obvious, and local rescue procedures can vary.
