In Florida usage, “wild coffee” refers to Psychotria nervosa, a shrub in the family Rubiaceae also known as shiny-leaved wild coffee. The Cayman Nature plant entry for this species states that Florida wild coffee does not contain caffeine. That statement applies to this one plant under that name. A common name that includes “coffee” does not mean the plant is a true coffee, and it does not tell you anything about other plants sold or described as wild coffee elsewhere.

Which plant is called wild coffee?

The name is a regional common name, and it is the reason readers get confused. The plant that carries it in Florida is Psychotria nervosa. Cayman Nature’s entry for the species places it in Rubiaceae, the same family as the coffee genus Coffea, and reports that it occurs in Florida, the West Indies, and continental America, where its forms vary. Shared family membership is not the same as shared chemistry, so the family tie should not be read as a sign that the shrub makes coffee-like compounds.

Keep the scientific name in view whenever you see the common name. Other plants have been called wild coffee in other places, and the caffeine-free statement discussed below is tied to Psychotria nervosa alone.

Does wild coffee contain caffeine?

The Cayman Nature entry, which identifies the plant as Psychotria nervosa and cites George R. Proctor’s Flora of the Cayman Islands (2012), states: “Wild Coffee (Florida) does not contain caffeine.” That is the most specific caffeine statement available for this species.

  • Great Gift for Coffee Lovers – This trio makes a thoughtful gift set and adds tropical charm to kitchens, home offices, and indoor plant collections

Two limits apply. First, the statement comes from a secondary plant reference, not from a laboratory analysis of the shrub. Second, the available sources do not provide a measured caffeine value for Psychotria nervosa, so the claim is a reported absence rather than a quantified result. The PROSEA account of caffeine lists it as occurring in several higher-plant genera, including Ilex and Coffea. That broad statement says nothing specific about Psychotria nervosa, so it should not be used to fill the gap.

How it differs from yaupon holly

Yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) is a different native Florida shrub, and it is the source of the caffeine confusion most people will run into. UF/IFAS states that yaupon leaves contain caffeine and describes yaupon as a caffeinated tea plant. Do not carry yaupon’s beverage use or its growing advice over to Psychotria nervosa.

Feature Psychotria nervosa (wild coffee) Ilex vomitoria (yaupon holly)
Common name in Florida Wild coffee; shiny-leaved wild coffee Yaupon holly
Family Rubiaceae (Cayman Nature entry) Not stated in the sources reviewed
Caffeine in leaves Reported as absent for Florida wild coffee (Cayman Nature entry); no measured value available Leaves contain caffeine (UF/IFAS)
Documented beverage use Not documented as a beverage; a seed-based coffee substitute trial is reported historically with poor results (see below) Described by UF/IFAS as a caffeinated tea source
Caffeine quantity Not established in available sources Not compared in the sources reviewed
Source type Secondary plant reference citing a Cayman flora University extension publication (UF/IFAS)

Because the two sources are different kinds of documents and do not measure the same things, the table is a comparison of reported statements, not of caffeine content.

What the shrub looks like and where it grows

According to the Cayman Nature entry, which describes the species from Proctor’s 2012 flora at page 629, Psychotria nervosa has these traits:

On Cayman, the entry places the plant in rocky woodlands. The same entry calls the species vulnerable in its Cayman listing. That is a local status for the Cayman Islands and should not be generalized to the species across Florida or the wider range. The available sources do not include a current regional conservation assessment for Florida or the other parts of its range.

Landscape use and what planners still need to check

The Cayman Nature entry describes the shrub as suitable for landscaping, and the wildlife details above are the main reasons it would be chosen. The sources do not provide species-specific cultivation instructions, including soil preferences, spacing, pruning, or site conditions for construction-adjacent planting.

Before specifying Psychotria nervosa on a project, confirm three things locally:

  1. Whether the species is native or appropriate for your county or island, using a regional extension office or a native-plant nursery.
  2. Whether live plants are available from a reputable source, since the sources reviewed did not confirm current nursery or retail availability.
  3. How the shrub’s mature height of up to 2.5 m fits the planting location, including clearance from walls, walkways, and utility lines.

Traditional uses and why they are not advice

The Cayman Nature entry reports that leaves were used as a medicine for back trouble, and that a tea was made from the plant for kidneys and as a tonic. These are historical, local reports. The sources do not establish clinical effectiveness, a safe dose, or whether the plant is safe to swallow, so none of these uses should be treated as a recommendation to consume it.

The same entry says seeds tried as a coffee substitute produced “only bad taste and terrible headaches.” That is an anecdotal historical report, not a controlled test, and it is a reason to avoid experimenting with the seeds rather than evidence about a proper dose.

What is not established

  • A measured caffeine value for Psychotria nervosa.
  • A primary chemical analysis of the shrub.
  • Current conservation status outside the Cayman Islands listing.
  • Species-specific growing guidance, including the shrub’s tolerance of construction disturbance.
  • Any attributable quotation from a named botanist about this species; the only verbatim wording available is the Cayman Nature entry’s statement quoted above.

Until these gaps are filled by primary sources, treat the caffeine-free description as a reported property of the Florida plant named wild coffee, and treat the landscape and historical details as reference points to verify on site.
