Weak airflow often points to a dirty filter, blocked vents, or ice; strong warm airflow can also result from settings, room conditions, or a problem that needs service. Work through the low-risk checks below, following your model’s manual. Don’t open the cabinet or attempt electrical or refrigerant repairs.
Start by identifying the symptom
With the unit on, note whether it powers up and whether air comes from the front. Is the airflow weak, absent, or strong but warm? This observation helps narrow the possibilities, but it cannot identify a failed part by itself. TCL’s troubleshooting guide uses airflow symptoms to distinguish possible restrictions such as a dirty filter or ice from control, room-condition, or equipment issues (TCL troubleshooting guide).
- No airflow: Check the controls and accessible airflow openings. If the unit still produces no air, stop troubleshooting and contact support or a qualified service provider.
- Weak airflow: Inspect the filter and vents, and look for visible frost or ice.
- Strong airflow that feels warm: Check the mode, target temperature, compressor start delay, outdoor airflow, and room heat load.
Check power, mode, and temperature settings
- Confirm power. Make sure the plug is secure and use the electrical connection specified in the owner’s manual. LG and TCL caution against unsuitable power strips or extension cords; follow the instructions for your model (LG guidance; TCL guidance).
- Select Cool mode. Fan mode moves air without providing cooling. Check the display or controls rather than relying on the sound of the unit.
- Set the target below the room temperature. Choose a sensible cooling target and an appropriate fan speed. Midea likewise advises checking Cool mode and a setpoint below the room temperature (Midea window AC FAQ).
- Allow for a restart delay. Some units wait a few minutes before restarting the compressor. TCL describes a minimum three-minute wait in its procedure; LG’s weak-cooling guide calls for a 30-minute check at 18°C (64°F). These are model-specific troubleshooting directions, not universal rules or required settings for every AC.
Clean the filter and clear airflow
- Turn off and unplug the unit before removing the filter. Follow your manual’s filter-removal and cleaning instructions.
- Clean a washable filter gently. TCL recommends rinsing a dirty filter with lukewarm water, using mild soap only if needed, then drying it completely before reinstalling. Do not operate the unit without its filter (TCL filter guidance).
- Replace only a filter that is damaged or will not clean. Check the unit’s model number and confirm that a replacement air filter is made to fit it; filters are not universal.
- Unblock the indoor vents. Move curtains, blinds, furniture, and other objects away from the intake and outlet so air can circulate freely.
- Check the accessible outdoor section. Clear leaves or other loose obstructions only where you can reach safely without removing the case. Do not spray the whole unit or dismantle it. For coil cleaning, use the procedure in the applicable owner’s manual rather than a generic method.
Filter-cleaning frequency depends on use and conditions. LG recommends checking or cleaning its fine-dust filter about once every two weeks during peak summer, depending on use; Whirlpool also advises checking every two weeks. Treat these as manufacturer maintenance guidance, not a schedule that fits every model (LG; Whirlpool).
Switch off the unit if you see ice
Frost or ice on the unit, especially alongside weak or declining airflow, is a reason to stop cooling and let it defrost according to the model manual. Do not chip, scrape, or pry ice off, and do not use a hair dryer, heat gun, or other tool to speed melting. TCL advises using Fan mode if available or turning the unit off and unplugging it to allow a full defrost (TCL defrost guidance).

Before restarting, make sure the filter is clean, completely dry, and reinstalled, and correct any blocked airflow. If ice forms again after those steps, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider rather than repeatedly running the unit.
Reduce the room’s heat load
An air conditioner can be working yet struggle to cool a room if heat enters as fast as the unit can remove it. Close doors and windows, reduce direct sun with blinds or curtains, and limit heat from appliances where practical. A window unit is intended to cool its room, not multiple rooms; room size and unit capacity matter.

- An undersized unit may run for long periods without bringing the room to a comfortable temperature.
- An oversized unit may cool the air quickly and cycle off before removing enough humidity, depending on conditions.
- Very hot rooms may take longer to cool. Give the unit time after reducing heat sources and closing the room.
Outdoor temperature limits vary by product. Whirlpool says its air conditioner will not cool below 65°F (18°C); LG says air conditioners may not cool properly below 18°C (64°F) or above 48°C (118°F). Those are each brand’s guidance, not universal operating limits. Check your model’s manual for its specified range (Whirlpool guidance; LG guidance).

Installation can affect drainage and performance. Midea says a slight backward tilt helps condensate drain toward the rear, but the required angle and clearances depend on the model. Use the installation instructions for your unit; do not adjust a heavy window AC alone. If water leaks indoors or the unit seems improperly supported, consult the installer or a qualified professional (Midea FAQ).

Know when to call for service
Contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider if cooling remains poor after the basic checks, airflow is still absent, or ice returns after a full defrost and airflow corrections. Stop using the unit and seek help promptly for sparks, a burning smell, loud popping, or unusual electrical behavior. Do not open the cabinet, probe electrical components, bypass controls, or handle refrigerant. A product-specific window AC manual warns that customers must not troubleshoot internal components (W Appliance Co. user manual).
