It should fade. A plastic or electrical smell, an odor that persists or grows stronger, or visible smoke can signal a problem: turn the system off if you can do so safely and contact a qualified HVAC professional. If you smell rotten eggs or sulfur near a gas appliance, leave immediately and call the gas utility from outside. Carbon monoxide has no smell, so odor is not a way to detect it.
First, identify the smell and what is happening
The odor’s character, when it started, whether it is fading, and any smoke or symptoms help determine the next safe step. The common dusty-startup explanation applies chiefly to central furnaces after a period of inactivity; it does not establish the cause of an odor from every kind of heater.

Why a furnace can smell dusty at seasonal startup
During a long idle period, dust can settle on furnace components and ductwork. When the furnace heats, that dust can produce a temporary dusty or musty odor. Trane says the smell should dissipate relatively quickly; Carrier gives a broader typical estimate of about 30 minutes to a few hours. Trane’s separate blog estimates roughly 10 to 15 minutes. These are manufacturer estimates, not guarantees: stop the system if the smell worsens, persists, or is accompanied by smoke.
These explanations concern furnaces and HVAC systems. A portable electric heater, oil heater, wood stove, or other appliance may have different causes and safety instructions; consult its manual or a qualified technician rather than assuming a furnace explanation applies.

How to respond to a plastic or electrical burning smell
A plastic, electrical, or burning-wire odor is not the ordinary dusty-startup smell described above. Turn the system off if safe and arrange a prompt inspection by a qualified HVAC professional. Do not remove covers, inspect wiring, test burners, or try to diagnose combustion components yourself. If you see smoke, stop operation and seek immediate professional attention.
What to do if you smell gas
A rotten-egg or sulfur odor near a gas appliance may indicate a gas leak. Leave the building immediately with everyone, including pets. Do not use switches, appliances, or phones inside. Once outside and away from the building, call the gas supplier and follow its instructions. If the supplier cannot be reached, call the fire department.

Carbon monoxide is odorless
Do not use a heater’s smell—or the absence of one—to judge carbon-monoxide risk. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says fuel-burning heating systems, including furnaces and fireplaces, can produce CO, an odorless, colorless, deadly gas. A CO alarm or symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, or confusion call for emergency action.
CPSC recommends CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas, and monthly testing. Follow the alarm maker’s instructions and local requirements for installation and maintenance.

Safe checks for an ordinary dusty startup
If the odor is dusty, appears at first heat use after inactivity, and is fading without smoke or other warning signs, you can make a basic filter check. Start the heating season with a clean filter, using the size and type specified for your particular system and the replacement interval in its instructions. Filter maintenance is not a fix for an electrical or gas odor, smoke, or a persistent smell.
You can note when the odor begins, what it resembles, whether it fades or worsens, whether you see smoke, and whether it seems to come from the heating system. Those details can help a technician, but they do not replace an inspection when warning signs are present.
