Their cooler surfaces evaporate water more slowly, while plastic’s water-repellent surface can make droplets bead instead of running off. The two effects can work together, and neither means every plastic item will behave the same way.
Why does plastic stay wet when glass dries?
Plastic items usually hold less total heat
Dishwasher drying relies partly on heat left in dishes after washing and rinsing. Hot surfaces help water evaporate after the cycle’s final rinse. Typical plastic containers are lighter than glass or ceramic dishes, so they tend to retain less total heat through the drying stage and cool sooner. A cooler surface provides less help with evaporation, leaving droplets behind. NC State explains the role of heat and evaporation.
This is a comparison of typical items, not a claim that plastic has less heat capacity ounce for ounce. The lighter mass of a typical plastic container means it can hold less total heat than a heavier dish in the load.
Droplets may bead instead of running off
Plastic’s water-repellent surface can also encourage droplets to bead and remain on the container rather than flow away. Siemens identifies this surface behavior alongside plastic’s lower heat storage as a reason it may dry less effectively. Siemens’ UK guidance on rinse aid describes both contributing factors.

What can help plastic dry more effectively?
Check rinse aid and the dishwasher settings
Rinse aid is intended to reduce water’s surface tension and improve runoff. Check the manual for your dishwasher’s rinse-aid setting, whether dosing is enabled, and the recommended level; controls and advice vary by model and market. Rinse aid may help water drain from plastic, but it cannot change how quickly a lightweight container cools, and it does not guarantee dry results. Siemens’ recommendations are specific to its guidance and should be checked against your model manual.
Use available drying options and wait for the cycle to finish
If your dishwasher offers an intensive-dry option, its manufacturer may recommend it for items that are slow to dry. Siemens also advises waiting until the program has finished before judging the result. Not all machines have the same drying methods or settings, so follow the instructions for your own dishwasher.

Keep lightweight containers in place
Load plastic securely so spray-arm jets are less likely to move it. Miele Professional notes that light plastic dishware can be displaced by spray jets; that guidance concerns professional dishware, but securing lightweight items is a practical precaution.
