If incline buttons do not work or incline moves erratically
A model-specific incline guide recommends a power cycle followed by testing the incline-up and incline-down buttons at the welcome screen. If incline remains unresponsive, the guide identifies the console and upper console cable as possible causes—not confirmed failures.
- Switch the machine’s power off, then back on.
- At the welcome screen, test both incline buttons.

If “Please Stride” appears or speed/RPM is not displayed
The 2017 owner’s manual lists “Please Stride” as a troubleshooting condition related to a speed/RPM-reading problem. Consult the complete manual for your exact model year and follow its procedure. The message alone does not establish that a particular sensor has failed, so do not skip directly to replacing one. If the manual-directed basic checks do not help, contact Schwinn support.
If the machine clicks, knocks, squeaks, rocks, or has loose hardware
Schwinn’s support portal offers symptom categories for the 490, including clicking or ticking, knocking, squeaking, and rocking or loose hardware.
