Why January 6 Is a Traditional Date to Take Down Your Christmas Tree—and When You Shouldn’t Wait

January 6 is associated with Epiphany and the Twelve Days of Christmas, but it is not a universal deadline. A real tree should come down as soon as it becomes dry.

January 6 is a traditional date for taking down Christmas decorations in many communities, but it is not a universal rule. The date is associated with Epiphany, which marks the close of the Twelve Days of Christmas in some Western Christian traditions. However, a real cut tree should come down sooner if it is dry or deteriorating. An artificial tree can stay up until January 6—or longer—if its lights, placement, and electrical connections remain safe.

Why January 6 matters

January 6 is traditionally observed as the Feast of the Epiphany. In Western Christianity, Epiphany commemorates the visit of the Magi—often called the Three Kings or Wise Men—to Jesus. It is also associated with Three Kings Day in many Spanish-speaking and other communities.

The date is connected with the Twelve Days of Christmas. The Church of England describes Christmas as a 12-day season culminating in Epiphany on January 6. For families who follow that calendar, waiting until Epiphany to remove greenery and decorations is a meaningful way to observe the complete season rather than treating Christmas Day as its endpoint.

That tradition does not establish January 6 as the documented date when the Magi arrived. The biblical account does not provide a precise arrival date, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops notes that relatively little is known about the Magi. January 6 is a liturgical commemoration, not a historical arrival timestamp.

Twelfth Night can mean January 5 or January 6

The terms Twelfth Night, Twelfth Day, and Epiphany are related but are not always used identically. If Christmas Day is counted as the first of the twelve days, January 5 is the twelfth day, making the evening of January 5 Twelfth Night. Other traditions count the season as continuing through January 6 and refer to January 6 as the Twelfth Day or associate Twelfth Night with that date.

That is why reputable explanations may mention both January 5 and January 6. The difference usually reflects a counting convention, regional custom, or church calendar—not a factual disagreement about a single mandatory tree-removal date.

Is January 6 an official rule for every household?

No. There is no worldwide Christian or civil rule requiring every household to keep its Christmas tree up until January 6. Church calendars vary by denomination, country, and calendar system.

Tradition or practice Relevant date or season
Church of England Christmas culminates in Epiphany on January 6.
U.S. Catholic practice Epiphany is ordinarily celebrated on the Sunday between January 2 and January 8. The Christmas season continues through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.
Orthodox churches using the New Calendar Theophany is observed on January 6.
Orthodox churches using the Old Calendar The same fixed feast falls on January 19 in the civil calendar.
Some historical English customs Decorations could remain until Candlemas on February 2.

The USCCB’s proper calendar shows the U.S. Catholic observance differs from the fixed January 6 date used in some other traditions. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese’s explanation of the Orthodox calendar likewise describes the calendar differences that affect the civil date of feasts.

Candlemas, observed on February 2, is another historical endpoint associated with Christmas greenery. English Heritage explains that medieval English practice often kept greenery until Candlemas. This history is one reason it is misleading to describe January 6 as the only traditional date that has ever been used.

Is it bad luck to take the tree down before January 6?

Some English-speaking traditions say that taking down decorations before Twelfth Night brings bad luck. Other versions reverse the warning and say that leaving decorations up after Twelfth Night is unlucky. These are forms of folklore and household custom—not biblical commands, church-wide requirements, or scientific findings.

There is no evidence that removing a tree on December 26, January 1, January 5, or January 6 causes or prevents real-world bad luck. Families may still choose January 6 because the custom has cultural, religious, or sentimental meaning. Respecting that tradition does not require presenting the superstition as a universal fact.

The historical record is also less tidy than the modern “remove everything by January 6” version suggests. As English Heritage notes, the strict bad-luck deadline appears to be a relatively modern interpretation, while older English customs could continue through Candlemas.

The safety rule matters more than the calendar

For a real cut tree, the controlling question is not whether the date is January 6. It is whether the tree is still fresh, hydrated, and safely positioned.

The National Fire Protection Association advises removing a Christmas tree after Christmas or as soon as it becomes dry. The U.S. Fire Administration similarly recommends daily watering and disposal after Christmas or when the tree is dry.

That means January 6 is a tradition-based target, not a safety deadline. If the tree is dry on December 29, remove it on December 29. Do not keep it indoors merely to satisfy a date-based custom.

What the fire statistics show

Christmas-tree fires are uncommon, but they can become serious quickly, particularly when a dry tree is near a heat source or faulty electrical equipment. In its analysis of U.S. home structure fires during 2016–2020, NFPA estimated an annual average of:

  • 160 home structure fires that began with Christmas trees;
  • 2 civilian deaths per year;
  • 11 civilian injuries per year; and
  • $12 million in direct property damage per year.

In that dataset, 41% of the fires occurred in December and 33% occurred in January, meaning about three-quarters occurred across those two months. Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in 44% of the fires. Electrical failure or malfunction contributed to 34%, while a heat source too close to combustibles contributed to 20%. See the full NFPA Christmas-tree fire analysis for the defined period and methodology.

These figures do not prove that January 6 itself is unusually dangerous or that waiting until that date causes fires. The January figure covers the entire month, and NFPA notes that some January fires may have occurred after the tree had already been removed. The useful conclusion is narrower: a tree that remains indoors into January must still be monitored, and a dry tree should not be kept for tradition’s sake.

How to tell whether a real tree is too dry

Do not rely on a fixed number of days. Tree species, freshness when purchased, indoor temperature, humidity, watering, and proximity to heat all affect how long a cut tree remains in good condition.

Remove the tree promptly if you notice any of these signs:

  • Needles feel dry or brittle and fall off easily when the branches are touched.
  • Needles break rather than flex.
  • Branches become brittle or snap instead of bending.
  • The tree is visibly sagging or losing a substantial amount of foliage.
  • The stand is no longer taking up water.
  • The cut end of the trunk is no longer submerged because the water reservoir has been allowed to run dry.

Penn State Extension recommends removing a cut tree when needles break easily or fall off when touched. While the tree remains indoors, check the stand’s water level every day and use a properly sized stand that holds water. Clean water is sufficient; Penn State advises against additives such as sugar, bleach, aspirin, soda, or other homemade treatments.

Watering reduces drying, but it does not make a tree fireproof. In fire experiments, NIST found that a well-watered tree did not ignite under the same ignition source that ignited a dry tree. NIST emphasizes that maintaining moisture can reduce the likelihood of ignition, the rate of fire growth, and the peak fire size. It cannot compensate for damaged lights, an overloaded connection, a nearby heater, candles, or another ignition source.

Safe ways to keep a tree until January 6

If your tradition calls for keeping a healthy cut tree through Epiphany, use the following checklist:

  • Keep the tree at least three feet from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, heat vents, candles, and other heat sources.
  • Check the water level every day. Do not allow the trunk’s cut end to sit above the water.
  • Inspect light strings and extension cords for fraying, cracked insulation, loose connections, or other damage.
  • Use lights listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for connecting light strands; do not exceed the permitted number of connected sets.
  • Turn off tree lights before leaving home and before going to bed.
  • Keep the tree and its cords out of walkways and do not block a door, stairway, or other exit.

If any electrical component is damaged, if the tree is near a heat source, or if the tree has become dry, correct the hazard immediately. January 6 should never override a basic home-safety decision.

How to take down and dispose of a real tree safely

  1. Check the condition first. If the tree is dry, do not wait for January 6. Begin removal as soon as practical.
  2. Switch off and unplug the lights. Unplug them from the outlet before removing them from the branches.
  3. Remove decorations completely. Take off ornaments, hooks, tinsel, garlands, ribbon, tree toppers, and all light strings. Remove the tree stand as well.
  4. Plan the route out. Avoid dragging a dry tree past a fireplace, space heater, radiator, or other ignition source when possible. If the tree is large or shedding heavily, have another adult help carry it.
  5. Do not store it indoors. Do not put a dried tree in a garage or inside a shed attached to the home, and do not lean it against the side of the house. NFPA specifically warns against these locations.
  6. Use the local disposal program. Check your municipality’s rules for curbside collection, composting, recycling, or designated drop-off sites. Collection dates and preparation requirements vary.
  7. Never burn the tree in a fireplace or wood stove. The American Red Cross warns that the tree’s oils can cause dangerous flare-ups and chimney fires.

For example, New York City’s disposal guidance requires live trees to be stripped of lights, ornaments, tinsel, and stands before curbside composting. That is a municipal example, not a national rule; follow the instructions issued by your own local authority.

Artificial trees: January 6 is optional

An artificial tree does not dry out like a cut tree, so January 6 is primarily a matter of tradition, appearance, storage plans, or household preference. You may take it down earlier, leave it up through Epiphany, or keep it longer if that fits your household.

Artificial trees are not fire-risk-free. Their electrical equipment, plastic materials, nearby furnishings, and placement can still contribute to a fire. Continue to:

  • Use lights listed by a qualified testing laboratory.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for connecting light strands.
  • Turn the lights off before leaving home or going to bed.

These precautions are consistent with guidance from NFPA and NIST.

Living, potted trees are a separate case

A balled or container-grown tree with roots is not the same as a cut Christmas tree. Although it may look fresh, keeping a living tree indoors for an extended period can interfere with dormancy and reduce its chance of surviving after planting.

Penn State Extension recommends displaying a living Christmas tree indoors for ideally four to five days and no longer than one week. That advice may mean taking a potted tree out well before January 6, depending on when it entered the house. Follow the care instructions for the particular species and plan its transition back outdoors and eventual planting carefully.

A simple decision rule

Tree type or condition What to do
Artificial tree in good condition January 6 is optional. Keep it longer only if its lights, cords, placement, and materials remain safe.
Fresh, well-watered cut tree Keeping it until January 6 may be reasonable if it remains green, supple, hydrated, and at least three feet from heat sources.
Dry or deteriorating cut tree Remove it immediately, regardless of the calendar date.
Living potted tree Use short indoor-display guidance—ideally four to five days and no more than one week—rather than waiting for January 6 automatically.
Tree near a heat source or fitted with damaged lights Correct the hazard immediately. Do not wait for January 6.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is January 6 the end of the Christmas season for all Christians?

No. January 6 is an important traditional date in many Western and Orthodox Christian calendars, but observance varies. U.S. Catholic dioceses generally celebrate Epiphany on a Sunday between January 2 and 8, and the U.S. Catholic Christmas season continues through the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Some Orthodox churches using the Old Calendar observe Theophany on January 19 in the civil calendar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I keep a real Christmas tree up until January 6?

Only if it remains fresh, hydrated, and safely positioned. Check the water daily and remove it sooner if the needles are brittle or fall easily, branches snap, the tree is sagging, or the stand stops taking up water. Never keep a dry tree indoors to follow a tradition.

Can I burn my Christmas tree in the fireplace?

No. Do not burn a Christmas tree in a fireplace or wood stove. Its oils can cause dangerous flare-ups and chimney fires. Use your local recycling, composting, curbside, or drop-off program instead.

The Bottom Line

January 6 is a meaningful traditional date, not an absolute rule. Keep a healthy, well-watered cut tree until Epiphany if that custom matters to you. Remove a dry tree immediately. For an artificial tree, choose the date that suits your household while continuing to follow electrical and placement precautions.
