The reports documented different structures, warning signs and early explanations; they did not establish one proven cause shared by all five. The figure is limited to that headline window: by July 4, The Indian Express reported ten bridge collapses or cave-ins since June 18.
What happened in each district?
The five incidents occurred over nine elapsed days, June 18–27. Scroll called the June 27 failure the fifth in nine days; other contemporaneous coverage described the sequence as five collapses in 10 days. The structures ranged from an older bridge to recently opened and unfinished projects.

These incident details and project figures were reported by The Indian Express; Scroll’s report on the fifth incident is available here. The failures came around the onset of the monsoon, but timing alone does not show that rainfall caused each collapse.
Do the reports establish why the bridges failed?
No common technical cause was established in the contemporaneous reports. They contain reported conditions, explanations attributed to particular people and descriptions of government action; those are not interchangeable forms of evidence.

- Reported conditions: Kishanganj residents had reportedly warned officials about cracks. In Madhubani, cracks were reported in the failed section, and a supporting pillar was said to have been washed away.
- Attributed explanations: The Madhubani contractor blamed sudden water discharge after heavy rain. Separately, Water Resources Department Additional Chief Secretary Chaitanya Prasad said inadequate monitoring and precautions had meant bridge stability was not ensured. The latter was an early departmental explanation about the wider set of failures, not a final independent engineering conclusion.
- Administrative steps: Notices, suspensions, inspection orders and a proposed blacklisting process show official response. They do not, by themselves, establish the technical cause of a collapse or determine legal responsibility.
- Final findings: The reports cited here do not provide a completed technical investigation tying all five incidents to one cause or resolving the responsibility of every contractor and official.
J. K. Dutt, a Bihar Engineering Services Association functionary, argued that independent scrutiny was needed: “There is an urgent need of a third-party inspection as suspending engineers or punishing contractors would not serve any purpose,” he told The Indian Express on July 1. That is an advocacy position, not an investigation result.
What did the Bihar government do?
After the initial failures, the state sought reports from departments and asked them to issue notices to agencies and contractors over alleged serious lapses, including possible substandard materials and poor maintenance. A July 1 report said the government had not yet blacklisted a contractor while it awaited reports. The report also said structural audits were the state government’s responsibility.

The response expanded as further incidents were reported. On July 4, The Indian Express counted ten collapses or cave-ins since June 18, including additional failures in Saran. It reported that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar directed the rural works, road construction and building construction departments to submit inspection reports on old and under-construction bridges within two weeks. A Saran district magistrate said the exact cause of one collapse was unknown and noted that desilting had taken place recently.
On July 5, The Indian Express reported that 15 engineers had been suspended for alleged negligence and two construction companies had received show-cause notices. Its account described nine bridges and culverts addressed in the government action at that point: six old and three under construction. These reported measures were developments in an administrative response, not proof that final engineering or legal determinations had been completed.

The Indian Express’s July 4 report, its July 5 follow-up and Akashvani’s report of the departmental explanation describe this evolving response. Political statements about responsibility reported during the period were claims by political actors, not technical findings.

“Five bridges in 10 days” refers to the five reported failures from June 18 through June 27, 2024. It is not a count of every subsequent incident. By July 4, The Indian Express used a broader total of ten collapses or cave-ins since June 18, encompassing later events and a slightly different category of failures. A separate search phrasing, “Why did 10 bridges collapse in Bihar in 15 days?”, likewise refers to later coverage rather than the five-event sequence.

The contemporaneous reports summarized here were published from June 29 through July 5, 2024. They establish what was reported at that time, not the current status of investigations, repairs or legal proceedings. They do not establish final technical causes or later findings.
