TV sound that fades in and out is usually caused by the source, an audio-processing feature, an HDMI ARC/eARC connection, an incompatible audio format, wireless interference, or failing hardware. The fastest way to find the cause is to test one variable at a time: compare sources, compare TV speakers with the external audio system, switch temporarily to PCM or Stereo, power-reset the equipment, and test the cable and port.
First, identify what “fading” means
The symptom helps narrow the fault:
| What happens | Likely areas to investigate |
|---|---|
| Volume gradually becomes louder or quieter | Adaptive volume, night mode, dynamic-range compression, dialogue enhancement, or the program’s audio mix |
| Sound disappears briefly, then returns | HDMI ARC/eARC handshaking, an unsupported format, a loose cable, Bluetooth interference, or a source-device problem |
| Audio stops completely until restart | Software, HDMI/CEC communication, soundbar input selection, power, or hardware |
| Only dialogue becomes quiet | Dialogue processing, a center-channel problem, or the program’s mix |
| Bass or surround speakers disappear | Subwoofer or rear-speaker pairing, sound mode, format compatibility, or hardware |
| The TV switches between its speakers and a soundbar | Speaker-output settings, CEC commands, ARC/eARC negotiation, or an unstable external device |
A gradual change points more strongly to processing or content. Abrupt dropouts point more strongly to a connection, format, wireless, software, or hardware problem.

The fastest five-minute diagnosis
- Test several sources. Try a live channel, a built-in streaming app, and an external HDMI device such as a cable box, console, or streaming stick. Also try a different title in the same app.
- Compare speakers. Switch from the soundbar or receiver to the TV’s internal speakers. If the TV speakers remain stable, focus on the soundbar, receiver, connection, or audio format.
- Try PCM or Stereo. In the TV’s audio settings, temporarily change Digital audio output, Digital sound output, or HDMI audio format to PCM or Stereo.
- Power-reset the system. Turn off the TV and audio equipment, unplug them for two minutes, then reconnect and test again.
- Check the connection. Reseat the cable and confirm that it is connected to the TV port labeled ARC or eARC, not an ordinary HDMI port.
These tests produce more useful evidence than changing several settings at once. Roku recommends PCM-Stereo as a basic compatibility test because it is broadly supported by soundbars; Sony likewise warns that equipment without support for formats such as DTS or Dolby Digital may fail to output some content.

Use the test results to locate the fault
| Test result | Most likely area |
|---|---|
| Only one app, program, commercial, or channel is affected | Content mix, app, broadcast feed, or source device |
| Every source fades through the TV speakers | TV settings, software, power, or TV hardware |
| TV speakers work but the soundbar fades | Soundbar, receiver, cable, ARC/eARC, CEC, or audio format |
| Only one HDMI device is affected | That device, its cable, or its audio-output setting |
| Only Bluetooth audio is affected | Pairing, distance, interference, battery, or Bluetooth compatibility |
| PCM fixes the issue | Unsupported format or unstable passthrough/format negotiation |
| Optical works but HDMI does not | HDMI port, cable, ARC/eARC, CEC, or HDMI format negotiation |
If you use HDMI ARC or eARC
ARC sends TV audio to a soundbar or receiver over HDMI. eARC is the enhanced version with greater bandwidth and support for more demanding audio formats. CEC allows devices to exchange control commands such as volume, power, and input changes.
CEC may have a different brand name. Examples include Samsung Anynet+, LG SIMPLINK, and Sony BRAVIA Sync. ARC and eARC are related but not identical, and compatibility depends on both devices, their ports, the cable, CEC settings, and the selected audio format. Roku explains the distinction in its HDMI and CEC configuration guidance.
Perform a complete HDMI reset
- Turn off the TV and soundbar or receiver.
- Unplug both power cords.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Wait at least two minutes.
- Reconnect the cable to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port.
- Connect the other end to the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI OUT/TV ARC/eARC port.
- Restore power and turn on the TV first, followed by the audio system.
- Select the correct external-audio input on the soundbar.
- Test multiple sources.
This is the reset sequence described in Sony’s ARC/eARC support documentation. If the problem continues, test a known-good HDMI cable, temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices, and bypass any splitter, switch, extractor, or receiver. You can also try ARC instead of eARC, if the TV provides that option, as a diagnostic test.

TVs and sources may offer options such as PCM, Bitstream, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, Atmos, and passthrough. The correct choice depends on what the TV, source device, connection, and soundbar or receiver all support.
- Set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM or Stereo.
- Replay the same content.
- If the fading stops, the previous format or passthrough chain may be unsupported or unstable.
- Re-enable Dolby Digital, passthrough, or another advanced format one setting at a time.
- Stop when the system is stable and confirm that every device in the chain supports the selected format.
PCM is an excellent compatibility baseline, but it is not automatically the best permanent setting. Depending on the equipment, it may reduce surround or immersive-audio capabilities. If only Atmos or surround content fails while stereo works, format support is especially suspect.

Disable volume-changing processing features
If volume changes gradually while the connection remains active, temporarily disable features with names such as:
- Auto Volume or volume leveling
- Adaptive Sound, Intelligent Sound, or AI Sound
- Night mode or dynamic-range compression
- Clear Voice or dialogue enhancement
- Surround virtualization
- Automatic gain control
- Commercial-volume limiting
- TV-plus-soundbar modes such as Q-Symphony or similar features
- Headphone or Bluetooth volume synchronization
Menu names and paths vary by manufacturer, TV operating system, model, and firmware. Disable one feature at a time and retest. These modes intentionally raise quiet dialogue, reduce loud passages, or rebalance channels, so they can sound like a fault even when the connection is working.
Check the soundbar or receiver
- Raise the TV volume and the soundbar volume separately, and confirm neither is muted.
- Verify that the soundbar input is HDMI/ARC or Optical rather than Bluetooth, AUX, or another unused input.
- Confirm the TV’s speaker output is set to the connected external device.
- Check the soundbar display for input switching, mute, protection, or error indicators.
- Confirm that the subwoofer and rear speakers remain powered and paired.
- Test the soundbar with another source.
- Disable demonstration mode if the unit is behaving unusually.
- Check ventilation and note whether the unit becomes unusually hot before the audio fades.
Roku notes that selecting Bluetooth or auxiliary input on a Roku TV Ready soundbar prevents TV audio from playing through the soundbar. Samsung’s soundbar troubleshooting guidance likewise emphasizes the correct speaker selection and ARC-labeled port.
Try Optical as a diagnostic alternative
Optical removes HDMI ARC and CEC handshaking from the audio path, making it a useful diagnostic—not automatically a superior connection.
- Disconnect HDMI ARC/eARC.
- Connect the TV’s Optical/Digital Audio Out to the soundbar’s Optical In.
- Select Optical on the soundbar.
- Set the TV’s digital output to PCM if necessary.
- Replay the same sources.
Optical is often simple and stable for stereo or compressed surround, but it generally lacks eARC’s higher-bitrate capabilities and may provide less seamless remote and power control. Remove protective caps from the optical cable and ensure it is fully inserted. Sony provides optical connection guidance, while LG lists Optical Digital, HDMI, and Bluetooth as separate external-audio paths.

If the connection is Bluetooth
Bluetooth dropouts or changing volume can result from distance, walls, cabinets, metal obstructions, nearby wireless devices, Wi-Fi congestion, low battery, multiple paired devices, separate Bluetooth volume controls, or codec compatibility.
Recommended Free Tools
- Move the TV and speaker closer together and remove obstructions.
- Charge headphones or speakers fully.
- Disconnect unused Bluetooth devices.
- Forget and re-pair the speaker after restarting both devices.
- Check the TV and speaker volume independently.
- Test Optical or HDMI to determine whether the problem is wireless.
LG recommends reconnecting the Bluetooth device, checking digital sound output, trying PCM, and testing another connection when Bluetooth audio remains unstable.
Investigate apps, cable boxes, consoles, and streaming devices
Do not assume the TV is defective when the issue affects only one source. Try these steps:
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Restart the streaming stick, set-top box, console, or cable box.
- Test another title in the same app.
- Note whether the problem occurs during commercials, channel changes, episode transitions, or only Atmos content.
- Turn off audio normalization or volume leveling on the source device.
- Set the source to PCM or Dolby Digital instead of unsupported passthrough.
- Test the TV’s built-in version of a streaming service against the same service on an external device.
- Where supported, connect the source directly to the soundbar or receiver as a temporary comparison.
A problem limited to a cable box, console, title, app, or channel should be treated as a source-path problem first.
Restart, update, and reset in that order
- Restart the affected app or source device.
- Perform a full power cycle of the TV and audio equipment.
- Check TV and soundbar firmware.
- After an update, recheck audio output, CEC, ARC/eARC, and format settings.
- Use an audio-settings reset if the TV offers one.
- Use a factory reset only as a last resort.
Record network, account, picture, accessibility, and calibration settings before a factory reset. Firmware can fix compatibility bugs, but it can also change menu locations or reset audio settings. An update is not a guaranteed cure.

Signs of hardware failure
Arrange manufacturer service or consider replacement when:
- Audio fades on every input, including the TV’s internal speakers or a local test tone.
- One channel remains weak or silent.
- The problem worsens as the TV or soundbar heats up.
- Audio returns only after tapping, moving, or cooling the equipment.
- Multiple known-good cables and sources produce the same result.
- The TV or soundbar repeatedly reboots.
- There is buzzing, crackling, a burning odor, visible damage, or abnormal heat.
- The soundbar fails with another TV or source.
- Optical works reliably but HDMI ARC/eARC fails after proper resets and cable replacement.
Do not open a TV or soundbar unless qualified. Internal power supplies can retain hazardous voltage even after the device is unplugged.
What to tell technical support
Prepare the TV and soundbar model numbers, firmware versions, source device, connection type, affected apps or channels, frequency and duration of dropouts, and whether the equipment becomes hot. Also report whether:
- TV speakers are affected
- PCM/Stereo fixed the issue
- Optical works reliably
- Another HDMI cable helped
- The fault follows the soundbar to another source or TV
- The problem began after an update or equipment change
This information helps support distinguish a source problem from a TV, cable, port, format, or soundbar fault.

For clearer dialogue, a compact soundbar may be sufficient. A premium Atmos or eARC model makes sense only when the TV and source chain support it reliably; otherwise, it can preserve the same compatibility problems.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does TV sound fade during commercials?
Commercials and programs can use different mixes or loudness levels. If the change occurs only during certain commercials or titles, compare other content before changing equipment.
Can a bad HDMI cable cause intermittent sound?
Yes, but the wrong ARC/eARC port, CEC conflict, unsupported format, or incorrect soundbar input can cause the same symptom. Test a known-good cable after checking the ports.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I use PCM or Bitstream?
Use PCM or Stereo as a compatibility test. If it fixes the dropout, re-enable Bitstream or another advanced format one setting at a time if every device supports it.
Is Optical better than HDMI?
Optical can be a stable diagnostic alternative because it bypasses HDMI ARC and CEC, but HDMI/eARC generally offers better control and support for advanced audio formats.
When should I replace the soundbar?
Consider replacement or authorized service when it fails across multiple sources and cables, overheats, loses a channel, repeatedly reboots, or shows physical or electrical symptoms.
