The protruding tines make the soil less comfortable to use, but university extension advice treats this as a possible local deterrent—not a proven fix with a guaranteed success rate.
Why gardeners put forks in garden beds
Cats often dig in loose soil and cover their waste. Forks placed tines-up can make a patch of bare soil uncomfortable for scratching or squatting, which may encourage a cat to choose somewhere else. Colorado State University Extension and Oregon State University Extension both list forks as one option for protecting beds used by cats.
The advice is specifically about deterring cats from digging or toileting in soil. The cited extension sources do not establish forks as reliable control for slugs, snails, rabbits, squirrels, or other garden pests.
Do forks actually work?
They may help in a particular bed, but the extension guidance does not provide controlled-trial results, a standard spacing or depth, or a measured success rate. Oregon State University Extension horticulturist Brooke Edmunds puts the limitation plainly: “The bottom line is that it’s going to be specific to your yard.” The reason cats visit and the layout of the garden can affect which approach is useful.

How to use forks more safely
- Use them only in the spots where cats are disturbing the soil, rather than scattering them throughout the garden.
- Keep protruding forks visible. Oregon State University Extension warns that someone could otherwise put a hand on a sharp object while working in the bed.
- Do not assume there is a source-backed ideal spacing or depth; the extension sources do not specify one.
- Consider the site before using disposable plastic outdoors: it creates plastic waste, and the cited horticultural sources do not assess its environmental effects or breakage rate.
If cat feces are present, wear gloves when cleaning the bed. For personal health questions, including concerns about toxoplasmosis, consult a clinician.
Other options for protecting soil from cats
| Option | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Netting or mesh | A small bed or patch that needs a physical barrier | Fit and secure it to suit the site. RHS and Oregon State University Extension list netting or mesh as options for protecting soil. |
| Chicken wire | Soil that cats are digging in | Extension advice suggests laying wire over soil or between soil and mulch; it is a physical obstacle rather than a repellent. |
| Dense planting and moist seed rows | Reducing exposed, loose soil in borders or newly sown rows | RHS says densely planted perennial borders are less appealing as toilet areas and advises keeping seed rows well watered. Cats may prefer loose, dry earth and mulch. |
| Repellents | Discouraging visits where reapplication is practical | They may wash away in rain or irrigation and often provide short-term protection. Colorado State University Extension does not identify a repellent that works all the time. |
| Ultrasonic devices or motion-activated sprinklers | A broader area where a variable deterrent is acceptable | RHS notes that some cats respond to ultrasonic devices and others do not; Oregon State University Extension notes cats may learn to avoid a motion-activated sprinkler. |
Do cloches or crop covers keep cats away?
Not according to the cited RHS guidance. Cloches protect plants from weather and some pests, while fleece or insect-proof mesh excludes certain pests more effectively than cloches. These covers serve a crop-protection role and should not be presented as cat-specific deterrents.
