Some tomato varieties naturally retain a green or yellow patch there as the rest of the fruit ripens. Heat and direct sun can contribute, and widespread or severe uneven ripening may also involve growing conditions that limit potassium reaching the fruit. If the blossom end is dark, sunken, or decaying instead, that is a different symptom.
First, identify which end is staying green
A green shoulder is a green or yellow area around the stem end while the rest of the tomato ripens. The University of Maryland Extension describes this pattern as a result of cultivar genetics and environmental conditions. The word “ends” can mean either end, however: a dark, sunken, or decaying blossom end is not a green shoulder and needs a separate diagnosis. See Mississippi State University Extension’s guidance on common tomato problems.
Why the stem end may stay green
Some varieties naturally have green shoulders
Green shoulders can be a cultivar trait, especially in some large-fruited and older varieties. Nebraska Extension notes that some cultivars have a “uniform ripening” gene, while others retain green shoulders at maturity. If the same pattern appears on otherwise healthy fruit from one variety, check the cultivar description or ask the seed supplier before assuming the plant has a nutrient problem. Nebraska Extension’s tomato guide is dated 2007; for current seed choices, rely on the supplier’s description.
Heat and direct sunlight can contribute
University of Maryland Extension and UC Agriculture and Natural Resources identify high temperatures and direct sun as possible contributors to green shoulders. They are not a certain explanation for every affected tomato, so consider them alongside the variety and other growing conditions. UC ANR discusses these issues in its overview of abiotic tomato problems.

Severe uneven ripening can involve potassium availability
When blotchy ripening or yellow shoulders are severe, UMass Amherst says the problem is often associated with factors that limit potassium supply to developing fruit. Its list includes waterlogged or compacted soil, below-optimal potassium, excessive nitrogen, competing nutrients, dense canopy, and environmental conditions. Magnesium and calcium levels can also affect potassium availability. That makes a green shoulder alone a poor reason to add potassium fertilizer. Read UMass Amherst’s guidance on physiological ripening disorders for the broader set of factors.
Potassium deficiency may also show as bright yellow leaf margins on otherwise green leaves, according to Mississippi State Extension. That additional sign can be useful context, but it does not prove that potassium is the cause of a particular fruit’s uneven ripening.

What to do with affected tomatoes
If the fruit is ripe apart from the shoulder
Pick it and cut away and discard the green portion, as University of Maryland Extension advises in its green shoulders guidance. The page, updated February 20, 2023, distinguishes this from green potato skin, which is associated with toxic alkaloids.
If the problem affects many fruits
- Note whether the pattern is consistent on one variety or appears across several plants.
- Review recent heat and direct sun exposure, along with drainage, soil compaction, and canopy density.
- Before changing fertilizer, get a soil test or ask your local extension service for advice. The extension guidance identifies potassium availability as one possible factor but does not recommend a specific kit or fertilizer product.
For the next planting
Check the variety description or ask the seed supplier whether a cultivar is prone to green shoulders or has uniform ripening. Choosing a cultivar with uniform ripening may help if the trait is consistent in your current variety, though growing conditions can still affect fruit development.

When the green area is not at the stem end
If the blossom end is dark, sunken, or decaying, do not treat it as a green shoulder: it is a different visible problem. Mississippi State Extension describes a range of tomato symptoms in its tomato troubleshooting guide. Use the symptom’s location and appearance to distinguish it before changing care or fertilizer.
