Marie Van Brittan Brown created her home-security system because she wanted more control over who approached her home and how she responded—especially when she was alone or returning late from work as a nurse. With her husband, electronics technician Albert L. Brown, she designed a system that let a resident see, speak to, and decide whether to admit a visitor without opening the door.
A personal safety problem in Jamaica, Queens
Brown lived in Jamaica, Queens, New York, and worked long, irregular hours as a nurse. Her husband also worked irregular hours, which meant that either of them might be away while the other was home alone. A knock at the door could therefore create a difficult question: who was outside, and was it safe to open the door?

A conventional peephole offered only limited information. It did not allow the resident to communicate with the visitor, control the lock from a safer room, or quickly request help. Brown wanted to verify a visitor before having physical contact at the doorway.

The broader conditions of the period also mattered. The Smithsonian reports that serious crime in Queens rose by nearly 32 percent between 1960 and 1965, while emergency police response could be slow. These circumstances contributed to Brown’s concern about home safety, but the evidence does not point to one particular crime as the sole trigger for her invention. Her motivation combined personal vulnerability, work schedules, urban crime fears, and limited emergency assistance.

What problem was the invention designed to solve?
At its core, Brown’s invention addressed safe verification before entry. Instead of walking to the door and opening it to find out who was there, the person inside could remain at a distance and:
- See the visitor on a television monitor.
- Speak with the visitor through a two-way audio connection.
- Decide whether to unlock the door remotely.
- Activate an alarm if the visitor appeared threatening.
This made the system more than a burglar alarm. It was an integrated method for observing, communicating, controlling access, and seeking help.
How Brown’s home-security system worked
The patent, Home Security System Utilizing Television Surveillance, describes a coordinated arrangement of components:
- A visitor approached the entrance.
- A camera scanned through one of several peepholes in the door.
- The picture was transmitted to a television receiver in a bedroom or another interior room.
- The resident could speak with the visitor through an exterior microphone and interior speaker.
- If entry was appropriate, the resident could operate a remote or radio-controlled door lock.
- If the situation appeared dangerous, an alarm could alert a guard, police officer, watchman, or security station.
The design used four peepholes positioned at different heights. A movable camera could shift vertically to view through them, making it possible to inspect visitors of different heights. This was more flexible than a single fixed peephole and allowed the resident to observe without standing directly at the entrance.

The patent also describes audio-recording capability. The result was an ambitious 1960s system that brought video surveillance, intercom communication, remote access control, and emergency signaling into a residence.
Why a television monitor mattered
In the 1960s, a television was a practical display device already familiar in many homes. Brown’s design used it as an indoor screen for the camera feed, allowing the resident to evaluate a visitor from a bedroom or other room.
That arrangement changed the usual relationship between a resident and a person at the door. The resident did not have to reveal their position immediately, approach the entrance, or open the door simply to obtain basic information. The television was therefore not entertainment equipment added incidentally; it was the interface that made remote visitor verification possible.

The patent dates and what they establish
The Browns filed their patent application on August 1, 1966. The United States granted Patent No. 3,482,037 on December 2, 1969, under the title Home Security System Utilizing Television Surveillance. The patent names both Marie Van Brittan Brown and Albert L. Brown.
The patent establishes the system’s intended combination of video monitoring, multiple viewing positions, two-way audio, remote locking, recording, and an occupant-controlled alarm. It describes a technical design and its functions; it should not automatically be treated as proof that every feature became a finished, mass-produced product in ordinary homes.
Was Brown’s system the first home-security system?
Brown is often described as the inventor of the first home-security system or the first modern home-security system. Those descriptions need qualification. Earlier alarms and closed-circuit television systems already existed, including systems used in institutional, military, and industrial settings.

- Enhanced motion detection with Outdoor 4 — With Outdoor 4, enjoy a wider field of view and be alerted to motion faster with dual-zone, enhanced motion detection.
A more precise description is that Brown created one of the earliest comprehensive residential video-security systems. Her contribution was not the invention of television surveillance itself. It was the adaptation and integration of video, audio communication, remote entry control, and emergency signaling for domestic use.
That distinction also explains why calling the invention simply an “alarm” is misleading. The alarm was only one part of a larger system designed to give a resident information and control before deciding what to do.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the system was ahead of its time
The Browns’ design anticipated functions now associated with video doorbells, CCTV, intercoms, remote locks, and monitored alarms. A modern device may send video to a smartphone rather than a television, but the basic questions are similar: Who is outside? Can I communicate without opening the door? Can I control access? How can I summon help?
There are important differences. Modern systems may add internet connectivity, cloud storage, encryption, mobile applications, artificial intelligence, subscription monitoring, facial recognition, and broader data collection. These features were not part of Brown’s 1960s design. It is therefore best to describe modern products as sharing related functions and reflecting a longer history of residential surveillance—not as direct copies of every element of her invention.

Why it did not become a mass-market product
The available accounts indicate that the system was not put into production by the Browns. Its equipment, wiring, mechanical camera movement, television connection, lock controls, and alarm network would have been expensive and difficult to install in a typical home at the time.
That lack of immediate commercial success does not make the invention insignificant. Its importance lies in the problem it defined and the functions it combined. Later patents and security technologies made those functions smaller, cheaper, and easier to deploy. Sources differ on the number of later U.S. patents that cited Brown’s work, so precise totals should be treated as source-dependent.
Protection, independence, and surveillance
Brown’s design was intended to increase personal safety and independence. The resident—not an outside authority—could observe, question, admit, refuse, or signal for help. That control was especially important for someone who might be alone at home and did not want to confront an unknown visitor.

Cameras and recording can protect residents, but they can also raise privacy questions for visitors, household members, and people beyond the property. Modern systems may extend those questions through cloud accounts, neighborhood sharing, facial recognition, and access by companies or law-enforcement agencies. The scholarly history of closed-circuit television in the American home is useful precisely because it treats residential surveillance as both a safety tool and a form of monitoring.
Why Marie Van Brittan Brown’s invention matters
Brown created the system because ordinary home-entry procedures did not provide enough information or control for the situation she faced. Her nursing schedule, her husband’s work, the possibility of being alone, neighborhood crime concerns, and slow emergency response all made a safer method of handling visitors valuable.
Working with Albert Brown, she turned that need into a comprehensive residential design. The patent’s lasting significance is not that it invented every part of modern security technology, but that it brought together remote viewing, communication, access control, and emergency signaling in a home. That combination makes Brown’s work a pioneering precursor to the video doorbells and connected home-security systems familiar today.
