Copper is appearing again in some Indian homes as drinkware, serving pieces and interior accents—but the reported revival is selective, not evidence of a nationwide shift away from steel, ceramic or other everyday wares. Its appeal brings together tradition, personal beliefs about health and changing design tastes. Those are distinct reasons to choose copper; cultural meaning and consumer belief do not establish a health benefit.
What copper’s return looks like in modern homes
A 2017 Scroll feature described a home using a copper carafe, tumblers and serving plate alongside older inherited utensils. It also placed copper accents in a wider interiors trend. The examples suggest selective reintroduction: copper sits alongside modern kitchenware rather than replacing it.
In that reporting, householders cited different motivations. Tara said, “I wanted to add a bit of tradition to my home and life.” Designers also described fashion as a factor. Valay Gada, a Delhi-based designer and head of Cobalt, linked copper and brass accents to design forecasts and their spread into other parts of daily life. Shwetal Bhatt, a Bengaluru designer, said buyers often have memories of the metal in grandparents’ homes or are drawn to conscious living. These accounts explain how the revival was understood, not how many households use copper today.
An Architectural Digest India feature from August 2020 similarly situated copper within renewed interest in traditional Indian cookware and design businesses working with heritage utensils. It offers design context, not a consumer survey.

Why copper carries more than one kind of appeal
Tradition and everyday rituals
Copper vessels can connect domestic routines with inherited practices and memories. That cultural resonance is meaningful in its own right, but it should not be treated as evidence that a vessel has a particular medical effect.
Design and material character
Copper’s visible presence can make a carafe, tumbler or serving piece part of a room’s styling as well as its kitchen use. The 2017 reporting described copper and brass accents in interiors; it did not establish that this remains a measured market trend in 2026.

Health beliefs—and what they do not prove
The Scroll feature recorded health-related claims, including an Ayurvedic practitioner’s view, and referred to research on microbial reduction in stored water and antimicrobial copper surfaces in healthcare settings. Those are not interchangeable with proof that drinking from a copper vessel boosts immunity, treats illness or makes water healthier. Findings about particular surfaces or controlled storage conditions cannot automatically be generalized to household products or therapeutic outcomes.
The World Health Organization’s 2022 copper fact sheet gives a drinking-water guideline value of 2 mg/litre, derived to protect against acute gastrointestinal effects in populations with normal copper homeostasis. WHO notes uncertainty for sensitive groups, including people with Wilson disease and other copper-homeostasis disorders. This water-quality guideline is not a recommendation to use copper vessels or evidence of broad health benefits.

The craft behind some copper utensils
Copper’s place in Indian homes is also connected to living metalworking traditions. A 2025 Press Information Bureau factsheet from the Government of India describes Jalandhar artisans making brass and copper utensils for kitchenware, ceremonial use, temple trusts and boutique buyers. It reports that the cluster employs more than 5,000 artisans. That is a government-reported figure for this cluster, not a national estimate of copperware employment or sales.
The Thatheras of Jandiala Guru have a specific heritage distinction. The Ministry of Culture reported that their traditional brass and copper utensil craft was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014. The ministry describes the vessels as having utilitarian and ritual value. The recognition documents this particular craft tradition; it does not mean every copper item is made by Thathera artisans.

Some sellers identify products as handcrafted by Thathera artisans. For example, P•TAL’s current catalog presents copper, brass and bronze kitchenware, cookware and home décor that way. A seller’s description is not independent verification of an individual item’s provenance, material composition or suitability for food contact.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing copperware for a real household use
Start with the intended purpose rather than the material’s reputation. A carafe or tumbler, serving piece, cooking vessel and decorative object are different purchases, and claims about one use do not establish suitability for another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm intended use: Check that the maker identifies the item for the specific food or drink you plan to use it for. A decorative vessel should not be assumed safe for food contact.
- Check construction: Ask whether the interior is lined and what the lining is made of. The sources available do not establish one universal construction rule for all copper vessels or cookware.
- Follow care directions: Use the maker’s cleaning and maintenance instructions; do not assume that care practices are identical across products.
- Assess provenance: If artisan origin matters to you, look for a specific maker or workshop and substantiation for claims such as handmade or Thathera-made.
- Consider practical use: Weigh care needs, price and how often the item will be used against its value as a serving piece or interior accent.
India’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade has issued a quality-control order for cookware and utensils and reported selected relaxations in 2024. That government material does not establish whether a particular product complies; check product-specific documentation rather than assuming compliance from a broad category description. DPIIT’s quality-control order information.
How far the comeback can be said to go
The available reporting supports a qualitative story about households selectively bringing copper into kitchens and interiors, alongside contemporary materials and inherited pieces. The government sources add evidence of active craft production and a documented heritage tradition. They do not establish a current nationwide adoption rate, sales trend or market size. Copper’s return is best understood as a visible cultural and design revival, not a quantified replacement of modern kitchenware.
