ASSA ABLOY announced its agreement to acquire San Francisco smart-lock company August Home on October 19, 2017; the purchase closed on November 21. The price was not disclosed. The deal was meant to combine August’s connected locks, doorbells and home-delivery access technology with ASSA ABLOY’s lock brands and reach. The ownership story later changed in the United States and Canada, where ASSA ABLOY sold its Smart Residential business to Fortune Brands in 2023.

What ASSA ABLOY announced in 2017

ASSA ABLOY AB, the Sweden-based lock and access-control group, announced a signed agreement to acquire August Home, Inc. on October 19, 2017. August was founded in 2013 and headquartered in San Francisco. The agreement was subject to regulatory approval, and the companies expected the transaction to close in the fourth quarter. ASSA ABLOY said the purchase price was not disclosed and that the acquisition was expected to dilute earnings per share. ASSA ABLOY’s announcement put August’s workforce at approximately 90 employees and projected its 2018 sales at about $60 million, or SEK 500 million; those were forecasts, not the acquisition price.

What August brought to the deal

August was more than a maker of app-controlled deadbolts. Its consumer products and services addressed the software side of residential access: controlling entry from a phone, managing access for guests or service providers, connecting locks to smart-home systems, and using doorbell cameras. Its August Access technology also explored controlled access for home deliveries. That approach treated a front door as a point for managing services and visitors, not just a place to install a lock. August’s account of the combination described its aim of extending August Access across more ASSA ABLOY locks and smart-door products.

Why the combination made strategic sense

The two companies brought complementary capabilities. August had a consumer-facing connected-access experience and software; ASSA ABLOY had established lock brands, manufacturing capacity, security expertise and distribution. For a startup, a large incumbent could offer routes to more customers and the operational resources needed to support products at scale. For ASSA ABLOY, August could strengthen its position in residential smart doors and broaden access into connected doorbells and delivery.

That opportunity came with a trade-off. Integration with a global manufacturer could give August reach, but an acquired startup might have less independence or move at a different pace than it had on its own. Contemporary coverage framed the tension as scale and distribution versus startup nimbleness, rather than as a guaranteed outcome. Fortune’s 2017 report also noted August’s prior fundraising; reported funding is not the deal’s valuation or purchase price.

Announcement and closing were different dates

Date Event
October 19, 2017 ASSA ABLOY announced the agreement, pending regulatory approval.
November 21, 2017 ASSA ABLOY acquired 100% of August Home, according to its 2018 annual report.
December 5, 2017 The companies publicly announced completion and the start of collaboration, including with Yale. Yale’s announcement used this public date.

How Yale illustrated the product strategy

The acquisition was not a corporate merger of Yale and August. Rather, the brands and capabilities could be combined in products: Yale hardware paired with August software and app features. Yale later described Assure locks as “Connected by August,” an example of the hardware-and-software approach the deal could support. Yale’s product announcement documents that collaboration. A branded product partnership, however, does not by itself establish who owns every related operation today.

What changed in North America in 2023

The 2017 acquisition explains how August came under ASSA ABLOY, but it is not a complete account of current ownership across all markets. On June 20, 2023, ASSA ABLOY completed the sale of its Smart Residential business in the United States and Canada to Fortune Brands. The business had approximately $400 million in sales in 2022. ASSA ABLOY’s closing announcement identifies the geography and scope of the divestiture.

That North American transaction should not be generalized into a claim that all August-related residential operations worldwide changed hands. ASSA ABLOY’s transaction materials distinguish the U.S. and Canadian Smart Residential business from residential businesses outside those markets. Its November 2023 offering circular sets out that geographic distinction. For a specific August or Yale product, ownership of a business segment alone does not confirm current availability, app compatibility or support arrangements.

Why the deal mattered beyond locks

The acquisition reflected a shift in residential entry from hardware alone toward connected access: software could grant or revoke permissions, and the same system could serve residents, guests, tradespeople or delivery workers. It also showed why a smart-home hardware startup might seek an established manufacturer’s scale and distribution, while a traditional lock company sought consumer software and connected-product expertise. The deal’s strategic importance lay in that broader access platform, not simply in adding another lock model.
