A pressure washer usually fails to draw detergent for one of four reasons: it is not in the manufacturer’s low-pressure soap mode, the detergent tube or pickup filter is blocked or leaking, the injector has not been given enough time to prime, or the injector itself is clogged or faulty. Start with the nozzle or lance setting, then inspect the complete detergent path before buying parts.
Use the sequence below with the washer’s operator manual beside you. Nozzle colors, ports, tube arrangements and cleaning procedures vary by model and market, so a setting that works on one machine is not automatically correct for another.

How detergent injection works
Most consumer pressure washers use a siphon or venturi injector. Water passes through the pump and wand, and the injector is designed to create enough suction to pull detergent through a small tube from a container. That suction is normally available only when the machine is operating in its specified low-pressure soap mode. A high-pressure tip can change the water flow so the injector no longer siphons.
The detergent circuit is separate from the high-pressure water hose. It generally includes a chemical port or pickup connection, a siphon tube, a small screen or filter at the pickup end, and the injector inside or near the outlet plumbing. A fault anywhere along that path can leave the washer spraying water while the detergent container remains full.

Because manufacturers use different layouts, do not assume that a black nozzle, a particular lance position or a particular port is universal. The manual for the exact make and model is the controlling instruction.
Common causes at a glance
| What you observe | Most likely cause | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Only clear water comes out when a high-pressure tip is fitted | The washer is not in its soap setting | Install the specified low-pressure soap nozzle or select the manual’s low-pressure/soap position |
| The tube is dry and the detergent level never falls | Tube disconnected, kinked, blocked or attached to the wrong port | Trace the tube from the machine to the container and inspect every connection |
| Detergent container is full but the pickup end is above the liquid | Tube or screen is not submerged | Refill the container and keep the pickup filter below the detergent surface |
| Detergent starts only after a long delay | The siphon needs time to prime | Allow the time specified in the manual; RYOBI Australia specifies up to 45 seconds for the models covered by its support instructions |
| Flow is weak, intermittent or contains bubbles | Air leak, split tube, loose fitting or partially blocked screen | Check for cracks, loose connections and a dirty pickup filter |
| Setup and cleaning checks make no difference | Injector blockage or component failure | Use the model-specific injector-cleaning procedure or contact authorized service |
Safety and detergent compatibility
Before troubleshooting, disconnect the spray gun from yourself and anyone nearby, stabilize the machine, and follow the shutdown and pressure-release instructions in the manual. Never point the lance at people, animals, electrical equipment or fragile surfaces while testing.
Use only detergent identified for pressure-washer use and follow both the detergent label and the equipment manual. Simpson Cleaning says never to use bleach; it can create a dangerous chlorine cloud when emitted and can damage internal washer components. Yard Force also warns against bleach, acids, corrosive chemicals and ordinary household cleaners. Do not substitute those products because a washer will not siphon.
Wear the protective equipment specified by the detergent label, keep the container upright, and prevent spills from entering drains or soil. If an unfamiliar chemical has already been used, stop, rinse the system with clean water as directed by the manual, and contact the manufacturer if you suspect damage.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
1. Identify the exact soap setting
Find the detergent or chemical-injection section of the operator manual. Depending on the machine, the correct setup may be:

- a black low-pressure soap nozzle;
- an adjustable lance moved to a low-pressure or soap position;
- a selector marked “soap siphon” or “detergent”; or
- another configuration the manufacturer names specifically.
Fit the specified nozzle or setting before testing. Simpson’s troubleshooting instruction is direct: “Be sure to use the soap nozzle.” RYOBI Support Australia states, “Regardless of the model, soap will only dispense in low pressure mode,” but that statement is attached to the models covered on its support page; confirm the requirement for your own washer.
Do not test detergent with a turbo, pencil-jet or other high-pressure tip unless the manual explicitly says it supports chemical injection. If the washer has a separate high-pressure hose extension, check the manual’s troubleshooting section before using it. Briggs & Stratton lists an extension on the high-pressure hose among possible reasons detergent may not siphon on its equipment.
2. Confirm that the washer has water and can run normally
Connect the garden hose fully, open the water supply, and purge air from the system according to the manual. A machine that surges, loses prime or cannot produce a stable spray may not create the flow needed for detergent injection. Correct the water-supply problem before diagnosing the chemical circuit.
Some manufacturer troubleshooting pages list water-inlet pressure that is too high as a possible reason for poor siphoning on particular models. Treat that as a model-specific check, not a universal pressure requirement. Use the inlet guidance in your manual rather than adding a regulator or changing fittings by guesswork.
3. Check the detergent container and tube
- Fill the container with suitable pressure-washer detergent. Do not dilute it unless the detergent label or machine manual requires dilution.
- Locate the designated chemical port. Make sure the tube is connected there rather than to a water inlet, drain, or accessory port.
- Follow the entire tube to the pickup end. Untangle loops and remove sharp bends that could collapse the hose.
- Inspect the tube for splits, flattened sections, loose collars and chemical residue. A leak on the suction side can admit air even when no liquid is visibly leaking out.
- Ensure the pickup end remains below the detergent surface while the washer is operating. If the design uses a tube that reaches the bottom of the container, make sure it has not curled upward.
A tube that is disconnected, kinked, too short to stay submerged, or attached to the wrong port will prevent siphoning regardless of which nozzle is installed.

4. Inspect and clean the pickup screen or filter
Many systems have a small screen or filter on the end of the chemical tube. Remove it only as the manual permits, then look for dried detergent, grit, paint flakes or other debris. Rinse or clean it using the procedure specified by the manufacturer; do not enlarge the mesh or poke it with a sharp tool.
Reinstall the screen securely and check that the connection does not admit air. If the screen is cracked, missing or permanently restricted, identify a compatible replacement using the washer’s make, model and parts diagram. A generic filter may not seal or fit the injector correctly.
5. Give the siphon time to prime
Start the machine in the specified soap mode and keep the pickup end submerged. Watch the tube without placing your hands near the spray. Some systems begin drawing almost immediately; others need time to fill the tube and injector.
RYOBI Australia instructs users of the models listed on its support page to allow up to 45 seconds for soap to dispense. That is a model-family operating instruction, not a universal waiting period for every pressure washer. If the manual gives a different time, follow it. If no detergent appears after the stated period, stop the test and continue with the inspection rather than running the pump indefinitely.
6. Flush the detergent circuit with clean water
Residue is a common source of restricted flow. After detergent use, place the chemical pickup screen in a container of clean water and operate the washer in its low-pressure soap mode so clean water passes through the tube and injector. Simpson Cleaning recommends this approach, and Yard Force likewise advises rinsing with clean water after detergent use.

For an existing blockage, use the manual’s cleaning procedure. Some machines permit removal of a screen or nozzle for cleaning; others require a specific injector service sequence. Do not insert wire, compressed air or a chemical solvent unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it, because those methods can damage seals or alter the injector.
7. Re-test with the simplest approved setup
After cleaning, reconnect only the components required for detergent injection: the normal water supply, spray gun, approved soap nozzle or setting, and chemical tube. Keep the tube straight and the filter submerged. This removes accessories that could obscure the fault.
If detergent now flows, add any extension, lance or accessory back one at a time and test after each change. Briggs & Stratton describes this kind of component isolation in its own troubleshooting guidance. Because the exact sequence is manufacturer-specific, use it only when your manual gives equivalent instructions.
8. Escalate to injector service only after basic checks
If the washer still sprays clear water after the correct soap setting, tube, filter, detergent and flushing steps have been verified, an injector may be blocked by chemical buildup or may have failed. Follow the model’s injector-cleaning instructions or arrange service through the manufacturer or an authorized dealer.
Do not assume that an injector kit from another model will fit. Simoniz’s guide discusses an injector kit for a particular 2700 PSI model; that example does not establish a universal replacement part. Record the full model and serial information before ordering anything.

Manufacturer guidance that explains the low-pressure requirement
Several manufacturer support pages describe the same operating principle, with model-specific wording:
- Briggs & Stratton support lists “Pressure washer is not set to low pressure – Make sure you are using the proper soap siphon setting or nozzle.”
- Simpson Cleaning says, “Be sure to use the soap nozzle.”
- RYOBI Support Australia says, “Regardless of the model, soap will only dispense in low pressure mode,” and separately instructs users of its listed models to allow up to 45 seconds for dispensing.
- Yard Force states, “Important: Detergent will only be drawn through the machine when the variable pressure nozzle is set to the low-pressure setting.”
These statements support checking the soap mode first, but they do not make nozzle colors, wait times or connection arrangements interchangeable between brands. Your manual takes precedence.
What to replace, and when
| Possible part | Replace it when | What to verify before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Low-pressure soap nozzle | The approved nozzle is missing, damaged or cannot be cleared | Exact washer model, wand connection and the manufacturer’s specified nozzle type |
| Detergent siphon tube | The tube is split, permanently kinked, chemically swollen or no longer seals | Tube length, internal diameter, port fitting and chemical compatibility |
| Pickup filter or screen | The screen is cracked, missing or remains restricted after approved cleaning | Exact parts-list number and the correct connection to the siphon tube |
| Injector kit or injector assembly | Basic setup and cleaning checks pass but the injector still will not siphon | Model-specific service part, warranty status and whether the manual requires professional service |
A detergent purchase cannot correct a wrong nozzle setting, an air leak or a blocked injector. Conversely, replacing a tube will not solve a failed injector. Diagnose the part before spending money, and keep the washer’s warranty terms in mind.

- Use only the detergent concentration and type permitted by the manual and label.
- Keep the pickup filter submerged during every detergent cycle.
- Do not leave detergent sitting in the tube or injector after use.
- Draw clean water through the chemical circuit after each detergent job, following the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Store the tube without tight bends, crushing or exposure to chemicals it was not designed to handle.
- Inspect the screen and tube before the next job, especially if the washer has been stored for a long period.
- Keep the approved soap nozzle separate from high-pressure tips so the correct nozzle is easy to identify.
When to stop troubleshooting and call for service
Arrange manufacturer or authorized service when the injector remains nonfunctional after the manual’s setup and cleaning checks, when a fitting or pump connection is damaged, or when the washer is still under warranty and opening the injector could affect coverage. Service is also the safer choice if detergent has entered an unintended part of the machine, the pump is making unusual noises, the unit overheats, or the electrical supply has been exposed to chemical contamination.
Give the technician the exact model and serial number, detergent type, nozzle or lance setting used, whether the tube was submerged, and the steps that changed or failed to change the symptom. That information helps distinguish a suction-path fault from an injector or water-flow problem without replacing parts at random.
A practical decision path
- Wrong mode? Fit the specified low-pressure soap nozzle or select the documented soap setting.
- Tube problem? Confirm the correct port, an unbroken and unkinked tube, a submerged pickup end and a sound filter.
- Needs priming? Run the machine for the manual’s stated interval; use the 45-second figure only for the RYOBI models whose instructions specify it.
- Residue? Flush clean water through the detergent path and clean the filter as directed.
- Still no siphon? Follow the model-specific injector procedure or contact authorized service before ordering a kit.
This order addresses the most common, least costly causes first while preserving the manufacturer’s safety and warranty requirements.
