Fully charge the battery with a charger approved for your mower and battery, then note whether it loses charge while disconnected, only after installation, or because the mower fails to replenish it while running. That distinction points to the next check.
First, make sure the battery and connections are ready to test
Turn the mower off and follow its manual for safe battery isolation and cable removal. Check that both battery posts and cable ends are clean and tight, inspect the cables for cracks or exposed wire, and make sure the battery is secured by its hold-down. Cleaning the visible posts alone does not rule out a loose connection or damaged cable elsewhere.
For its riding mowers, Husqvarna advises removing the negative cable first during cleaning, brushing the terminals and cable ends until bright, and applying grease or petroleum jelly afterward. Follow the instructions for your own mower rather than assuming cable-removal order or procedure is universal. Husqvarna battery maintenance instructions
Toro’s commercial electrical guide identifies loose connections and damaged cables as possible faults. It gives a voltage drop greater than 0.2V across a connection as a reason to clean it in the guide’s test context; do not treat that number as a universal homeowner limit. Fully charge it with the right charger
Use the battery and mower manuals to confirm the charger type, voltage, and charge rate. Do not assume a car charger’s boost setting is suitable: Husqvarna warns against boost chargers for the riding mowers covered by its instructions. Husqvarna riding-mower battery instructions
As a manufacturer-specific example, Husqvarna’s U.S. riding-mower support page directs owners to charge for four hours at no more than 3A, then check for at least 12V DC. Those directions apply to the mowers covered by that page, not every lawn mower battery. Briggs & Stratton says, under its small-engine guidance, to replace a battery that fails to fully charge within eight hours; that period is likewise not a universal charge-time rule. Battery charging and handling can cause burns or an explosion if done improperly. Briggs & Stratton recommends eye protection and working in a ventilated area away from ignition sources. Follow the charger and battery safety instructions, and stop if the battery is damaged or behaving abnormally.
Find out when the charge disappears
After a proper full charge, compare what happens with the battery disconnected from the mower and with it installed. Use the mower manual for the safe disconnection procedure and the meter method; do not leave a charged battery unattended if it is hot, swollen, leaking, or otherwise damaged.

Briggs & Stratton recommends a multimeter check to determine whether a charged battery loses power while idle. Toro distinguishes parasitic loads—small currents continuously drawn by equipment—from self-discharge associated with buildup on the battery exterior. Its guide calls a draw above 50mA excessive for Toro commercial products; that threshold should not be applied to other mowers without their service information.
If it drains only when installed, look for a draw or leakage path
A battery that retains charge disconnected but drains on the mower points away from simple terminal corrosion. Possible causes include a component or accessory continuing to draw current, damaged wiring, or an exterior leakage path. A multimeter can help test for an idle draw, but the connection method and acceptable limit depend on the mower. Follow its service manual rather than disconnecting wires or guessing at a threshold.

If it holds charge parked, check whether the mower charges it
On a key-start mower with an engine charging system, a battery that holds charge by itself but goes flat after use may not be receiving charge while the engine runs. Alternator configurations vary. Briggs & Stratton describes multimeter testing and notes that an incorrect result can indicate a stator, diode, or regulator fault, depending on the system. Use the correct alternator specifications and test procedure for your equipment; there is no single generic voltage-at-idle figure that applies to every mower.
If you cannot identify the alternator type or safely perform the test, consult the equipment manual or a mower dealer. Avoid replacing an alternator component based only on a generic meter reading.

Choose the repair based on the test result
- Battery fails to retain a full charge disconnected: have it tested and replace it if it is no longer serviceable. Match the replacement to the mower’s specified battery type and fit.
- Charge disappears only while installed: have the wiring, connected loads, and possible leakage paths checked.
- Battery holds charge but is not replenished during operation: follow the mower-specific charging-system test; repair may involve a stator, diode, regulator, wiring, or professional diagnosis.
