For a serviceable lead-acid battery on a riding mower, follow the mower manual to disconnect it, clean the posts and cable ends, dry them fully, reconnect in the specified order, and apply an approved terminal protector. For a sealed cordless battery pack, use only the dry-cleaning method in its manual; do not wash it or apply chemicals.
Identify the battery before cleaning
Riding mowers commonly use lead-acid starter batteries, while cordless mowers use removable battery packs. Their care differs. Husqvarna says its original-equipment riding-mower battery is maintenance-free and should not be opened. Its cordless mower-battery instructions call for compressed air or a soft, dry cloth and prohibit water and chemical cleaners.
Check the exact mower and battery manuals before using water, baking soda, grease, petroleum jelly, or spray. A method suitable for exposed lead-acid terminals may damage a sealed battery pack.
How to clean and protect compatible lead-acid terminals
- Prepare safely. Wear eye protection and keep flames, sparks, and smoking materials away. Lead-acid batteries contain sulfuric-acid electrolyte and can release explosive gas. Do not let a metal tool bridge the terminals or touch the machine’s metal parts.
- Disconnect in the manual’s order. Follow the instructions for your mower rather than assuming every model uses the same sequence. For example, Husqvarna specifies removing the black/negative cable first, then the red/positive cable; Toro also specifies disconnecting negative first but provides its own reconnection sequence.
- Remove corrosion using an approved method. If the manual permits, clean the battery posts and cable ends with a battery-terminal wire brush. Some conventional-battery manuals also permit dilute baking-soda solution. Keep liquid out of the battery, and rinse and dry the parts as the manual directs.
- Dry and reconnect. Make sure the terminals and cable ends are completely dry. Reconnect the cables in the sequence specified in the mower manual and secure the connections as directed.
- Apply a compatible protector. After cleaning and reconnecting, use the grease, petroleum jelly, or purpose-made terminal protector permitted by the manual. Husqvarna names grease or petroleum jelly; Toro identifies a terminal protector or a light coat of petroleum jelly. A coating does not replace clean contact surfaces or properly tightened connections.
How to care for a cordless mower battery pack
Use the cleaning method specified for that battery. Husqvarna’s cordless mower instructions say to use compressed air or a soft, dry cloth and not to use water or chemical substances. Do not apply a terminal coating unless the specific battery manual allows it.

What to put on mower battery terminals
For compatible lead-acid terminals, the mower manual may allow grease, petroleum jelly, or a purpose-made battery-terminal protector. These are optional protective coatings to use after the terminals are clean and dry and the cables are connected. A terminal brush removes deposits before protection; it is not a coating. Check the manual before using any product, including sprays.

Inspect the battery and connections according to the mower’s maintenance schedule. Keep them clean, and check that the battery bolts and cable connections remain tight as the manual directs. Husqvarna notes that corrosion and dirt on the battery and terminals can cause the battery to “leak” power.

Do not rely on a universal cleaning recipe or a fixed service interval: the appropriate method and schedule depend on the mower and battery manufacturer’s instructions.
