Neither timer is better on its own. The garment’s care label decides the heat level, and a setting that suits one item can damage another. Low heat is generally the better choice for delicate, embellished, knit, or heat-sensitive synthetic clothing, provided the label allows tumble drying. High heat can suit sturdy, heavy items whose labels permit it. Neither setting is appropriate for an item labeled “do not tumble dry.” The sources reviewed do not establish that 90 minutes on low or 30 minutes on high dries a load better or uses less energy, because the outcome depends on the dryer, the load, and how wet the clothes start.
Start with the care label, not the timer
The care label is the only instruction written for the specific fabric. It tells you whether tumble drying is allowed and which heat level to use. Whirlpool’s consumer guide “What Is Tumble Dry? Learn How to Tumble Dry” (undated) explains the high, low, and no-heat settings and makes the same point about shrinkage:
“Some fabrics can shrink in high heat drying cycles, which is why the care label will indicate the proper washer and dryer temperatures to select when doing laundry for your family.”
Care labels in the UK and much of Europe use symbols rather than words. Bosch Home UK’s guide “Tumble Dryer Symbols and Settings” explains them. A circle inside a square indicates tumble drying, dots inside the circle indicate heat level (more dots means higher heat), and a crossed-out circle means the item must not be tumble dried. US labels usually spell out the instruction in words, such as “tumble dry low” or “do not tumble dry.”

How the two options compare
| Decision factor | 90 minutes on low | 30 minutes on high |
|---|---|---|
| Heat-sensitive fabrics | Usually the more suitable choice if the label permits tumble drying; check the garment’s instructions first. | Can cause shrinkage or damage on some fabrics; use only when the label allows high heat. |
| Sturdy, heavy items | May take longer and can keep tumbling after the item is already dry. | May suit heavier cottons, towels, or work clothes when the label permits high heat, but 30 minutes may not dry every load. |
| Energy and completion | Not established: a longer timer does not guarantee lower energy use or a faster finish. | Not established: a shorter timer does not guarantee lower total energy use or complete drying. |
| Garments marked “do not tumble dry” | Not appropriate. | Not appropriate. |
This table compares typical use cases. It is not a controlled test of these two exact settings. Dryers do not all reach the same temperature, so the table should not be read as proof that 90 minutes on low always causes more wear than 30 minutes on high.
When high heat is a risk
High heat is the main concern for fabrics that shrink or lose shape. The risk is highest for:

- Superior Static Control & Softness – Premium laundry dryer sheets help fight static cling while leaving fabrics feeling luxuriously soft and fresh.
- Long-Lasting Lavender & Vanilla Scent – Enjoy a soothing, calm fragrance infused into your clothes and linens after every dry cycle.
- Multi-Purpose Fabric Sheets – Acts as both fabric softener sheets and simple static guard without messy liquids or sprays.
- Pet Hair & Lint Helper – Works as an effective pet fabric softener sheets option to help reduce pet hair and fuzz in laundry, complementing or replacing a lint roller or laundry lint remover.
- Easy & Convenient Use – Just add one dryer sheet per load to your machine for quick static reduction, softness, and freshness.
- Items labeled for low or no heat, including loosely woven, embellished, knit, and performance-synthetic pieces, which Whirlpool lists as low-heat examples.
- Mixed loads. A delicate item dried with a heavy load on high heat is exposed to the same heat as the towels.
- Garments with no label, or a label you cannot read. Treat these as heat-sensitive until you know otherwise.
Why low heat is not automatically gentler
Low heat is safer for heat-sensitive fabrics, but a long low-heat run has its own cost. Clothes that are already dry keep tumbling, which adds wear, and running the dryer past dryness uses energy with no benefit. Bosch’s guidance advises low temperatures and avoiding excessive drying for synthetic and functional fabrics, which points to the same conclusion: heat and duration both matter.
The US Department of Energy’s 2024 consumer-dryer standards rulemaking document records comments from manufacturers, including Whirlpool, that extended low-temperature drying can cause fabric wear under specified test conditions. These are stakeholder claims made during a regulatory process. They are not measured proof that long low-heat drying damages ordinary clothing more than short high-heat drying.

How to choose a setting
- Read the label. Confirm whether tumble drying is allowed and note the permitted heat level. If the label says do not tumble dry, stop here and use the air-drying method it specifies.
- Group items by drying need. Dry heat-sensitive clothing separately from sturdy items that can take high heat.
- Check your dryer’s cycle options. Look for an automatic or sensor dry cycle on the control panel, or in the owner’s manual, before choosing a fixed timer.
- Select a sensor cycle if one is available. If not, choose the lowest heat the label allows for delicate loads, and use high heat only for items whose label permits it.
- Remove items promptly. Take clothes out when they are dry to limit wear and wasted energy.
Use a moisture sensor instead of a fixed timer
The US Department of Energy’s consumer advice on home upgrades says a moisture-sensor dryer can stop when clothes reach dryness, which reduces energy use and wear from over-drying. That guidance does not compare the two timer options in this article, but it is the most reliable way to avoid guessing a time. Sensor cycles still depend on the load, so check the first few loads and adjust if clothes come out damp or over-dried.
Cycle names, defaults, and times vary by brand and model. LG USA’s cycle guide, dated 10 September 2026, lists default settings for its own dryers and warns against treating those times as universal. Your owner’s manual or control panel is the reference for your machine.

- In addition to using in the dryer to make your clothes feel softer, dryer sheets can also be used in a variety of places like closets, gym bags, suitcases, and cars to make them smell fresh.
- For long-lasting freshness and static reduction, add a Snuggle brand dryer sheet to every load you dry. Place the sheet on top of wet clothes and start the dryer cycle as usual. Discard after use.
- Safe for standard and high efficiency (HE) dryers.
- This package includes one box of 230 Snuggle Fabric Softener dryer sheets in a Blue Sparkle scent.
When the label says do not tumble dry
Neither timed setting applies. Bosch’s guide describes air-drying methods for care labels that prohibit the dryer. Lay the item flat if the label says so. Where the label permits it, an indoor drying rack is a practical way to air-dry clothes without the dryer.
