Most older DEWALT 20V MAX tools use standard DEWALT 20V MAX lithium-ion batteries. DEWALT specifically lists the DCB203 2Ah and DCB204 4Ah packs as compatible with 20V MAX tools and chargers. DEWALT also documents the FLEXVOLT DCB612 12Ah pack as compatible with 20V MAX tools and 20V MAX chargers. Those examples are not a universal list for every tool ever sold, so the final check is the battery table in your tool’s manual.
The important distinction is platform: an older 20V MAX tool is not the same compatibility case as an older DEWALT 18V tool. The DCA1820 adapter is intended for many 18V tools and has explicit tool-and-battery exceptions; it is not required for fitting a normal 20V MAX battery to a 20V MAX tool.

What batteries normally work with an older 20V MAX tool?
Start with packs carrying the DEWALT 20V MAX label and confirm the exact model number in the tool manual. DEWALT’s product information gives these directly documented examples:
| Battery | Published capacity | Compatibility stated by DEWALT | What that means for an older 20V MAX tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| DCB203 | 2Ah | Compatible with 20V MAX tools and chargers | A documented standard-pack option, subject to the target tool’s manual |
| DCB204 | 4Ah | Compatible with 20V MAX tools and chargers | A documented higher-capacity standard-pack option, subject to the target tool’s manual |
| DCB612 FLEXVOLT | 12Ah | Compatible with 20V MAX, 60V MAX and 120V MAX tools, and with 20V MAX chargers | A documented FLEXVOLT option; verify the exact pack and tool before buying |
DEWALT describes the DCB203 and DCB204 with the sentence “This battery is compatible with 20V MAX* tools and chargers.” That wording establishes platform compatibility, not a promise that every capacity, physical configuration or tool revision has been tested together. A manual can narrow the approved list for a particular model.

Why “20V MAX” can also be described as 18V
DEWALT says 20V MAX is the maximum initial voltage measured without a workload, while nominal voltage is 18V. That is the manufacturer’s labeling convention. It does not turn a 20V MAX tool into an older 18V tool, and it does not mean you should select batteries by the number “18” alone.
For compatibility, read the platform marking on the tool and battery, then use the model numbers. A 20V MAX slide-pack interface is a different system from the older 18V tools that may need the DCA1820 adapter.
Can you use a FLEXVOLT battery in an older 20V MAX tool?
DEWALT’s DCB612 FLEXVOLT product information states that this 12Ah pack works with 20V MAX, 60V MAX and 120V MAX tools and with 20V MAX chargers. Therefore, a DCB612 is a documented choice for a 20V MAX tool, including an older one, when the tool’s manual does not impose a model-specific restriction.

- Reliable runtime - take on tough jobs with these batteries that deliver 3ah capacity each for consistent runtime on the jobsite.
- State-of-charge - get quick visibility to your batteries' state-of-charge with the LED indicator to help avoid interruptions.
- Part of the 20V MAX* system - these batteries are compatible with 20V MAX* tools and chargers.
Do not generalize that one listing to every FLEXVOLT battery. FLEXVOLT packs have individual model numbers and published compatibility information. Check the exact pack you intend to use and the manual for the tool. Also account for the pack’s physical size and weight: a 12Ah battery can alter the balance of a compact drill, impact driver or light-duty saw even when the electrical interface is compatible.
The tool manual is the final compatibility check
DEWALT manuals can name approved battery models rather than merely saying “20V MAX.” Find the tool’s complete model number on its rating label, housing or original paperwork, then open the instruction manual for that exact model and revision. Look for headings such as “Battery Packs,” “Compatible Battery Packs” or “Recommended Batteries.”
The 2022 DCF845B instruction manual illustrates this model-specific method. Its compatible-pack table names DCB201, DCB203, DCB204, DCB205, DCB206, DCB208, DCB210, DCB230, DCB240 and DCBP034. That table is evidence for the DCF845B; it is not a cross-reference that automatically approves those packs for every older DEWALT tool.

How to read a model-specific list
- Match the complete tool model, including a suffix such as B, to the manual, not just the product family name.
- Compare the battery’s complete model number. A similar-looking pack with a different suffix can have different documentation.
- Check whether the manual lists charger requirements separately from tool compatibility.
- If a manual and a current product page appear different, follow the current documentation for your exact tool and contact DEWALT support before forcing a pack into the tool.
Do not confuse an older 18V tool with an older 20V MAX tool
The DCA1820 is a separate adapter path for many legacy 18V DEWALT tools. DEWALT Support says, “DCA1820 will fit most 18V DEWALT tools; the exceptions are listed below.” The support guidance was updated December 16, 2025, and its restrictions are specific to the adapter-and-18V-tool combination.

| Your tool platform | Normal battery approach | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| 20V MAX | Use a documented DEWALT 20V MAX battery, such as DCB203 or DCB204, or a documented FLEXVOLT model such as DCB612 | Verify the exact tool manual; no DCA1820 adapter is needed |
| Older DEWALT 18V | Use the DCA1820 only where DEWALT lists the tool as compatible | The adapter has tool and battery exceptions, so do not assume every 20V MAX pack is allowed |
Adapter exceptions for the compact DC970 and DC759 drills
DEWALT’s DCA1820 guidance specifically says not to use the adapter with DCB200, DCB204, DCB204BT, DCB205 or batteries above 4Ah in the DC970 and DC759 compact drills. For those drills, DEWALT identifies DCB201, DCB203, DCB203BT or batteries up to 3.0Ah as alternatives.
These restrictions do not reduce the ordinary compatibility of a standard 20V MAX tool with a documented 20V MAX battery. They apply when you are adapting an older 18V tool. The same support information also notes fit or function exceptions for other specific 18V tools, so identify the exact 18V model before purchasing an adapter or battery.

How to identify the right battery in five steps
- Read the tool label. Record the complete model number and confirm whether it says 20V MAX or belongs to the older 18V line.
- Locate the exact manual. Use the model number and revision information, then open the compatible-battery section.
- Match model numbers, not just capacity. A battery’s 2Ah, 4Ah or 12Ah rating describes stored capacity; it is not, by itself, a compatibility certificate.
- Check whether an adapter is involved. If the tool is 18V, read the DCA1820 exception list. If it is 20V MAX, the adapter should not be part of the connection.
- Inspect the physical fit before use. The rails, latch and contacts should seat normally. Never force a pack, modify the housing or bypass the latch to make an apparently incompatible battery fit.
Choosing between 2Ah, 4Ah and larger packs
Once the manual confirms compatibility, capacity becomes a use-and-balance decision. Amp-hours indicate the pack’s rated capacity, but the supplied DEWALT material does not provide a controlled runtime comparison among models. Runtime varies with the tool, load, material, operating speed, battery condition and temperature, so do not treat 4Ah as a guaranteed two-times runtime result compared with 2Ah.
| Use case | Likely practical priority | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Compact drill or impact driver used overhead | Lower weight and slimmer balance may matter more than maximum capacity | Does the manual approve the smaller pack, and does the larger pack make the tool uncomfortable or interfere with clearance? |
| Repeated fastening or drilling on a worksite | More capacity can reduce battery changes | Is the higher-capacity model listed for this tool, and can the tool’s handle and belt position accommodate it? |
| High-demand saw or grinder work | Capacity and pack size may support longer work intervals | Does the tool manual list the intended pack, and is the added weight acceptable for control and transport? |
| Legacy 18V tool with DCA1820 | Adapter-specific approval overrides a general capacity preference | Is this exact tool and battery combination allowed by DEWALT’s adapter guidance? |
For a known 20V MAX tool, DCB203 is a documented 2Ah example and DCB204 a documented 4Ah example. DCB612 is a documented 12Ah FLEXVOLT example, but its larger format makes the manual and physical-clearance checks especially important.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChargers and battery matching
DEWALT lists DCB203 and DCB204 as compatible with 20V MAX chargers. The DCB612 listing also states compatibility with 20V MAX chargers. Use a DEWALT charger identified for the pack’s platform and follow the charger and battery manuals. Do not infer charger approval solely from a battery’s ability to slide into a tool.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every 20V MAX pack is interchangeable
Most 20V MAX packs share the platform interface, but the exact manual remains decisive. Product pages for DCB203, DCB204 and DCB612 establish useful examples, not an exhaustive list for every historic tool.
Using amp-hours as the only test
Capacity does not replace a model-number check. A pack can have a suitable voltage label and still be excluded from a particular adapter or tool instruction manual.
Buying an adapter for a 20V MAX tool
The DCA1820 is intended for many older 18V tools. A normal 20V MAX tool should use its documented 20V MAX battery directly. Adding an adapter introduces another compatibility list and can create an avoidable fit problem.
Applying 18V adapter restrictions to 20V MAX tools
The DC970 and DC759 restrictions concern the DCA1820 and those older 18V drills. They should not be read as a ban on DCB204 or other documented packs in standard 20V MAX tools.
When a battery does not fit or the tool will not run
- Wrong platform: Recheck whether the tool is 18V or 20V MAX. Stop if an adapter is required but has not been approved for that model.
- Wrong model or suffix: Compare the complete battery number with the manual’s table; do not rely on a similar appearance.
- Physical obstruction: Remove the pack and inspect the rails, latch and contacts for debris or damage. Do not force insertion.
- Adapter exception: If using DCA1820, review DEWALT’s exception list, including the DC970 and DC759 capacity restrictions.
- Tool-specific documentation: If the manual does not list the combination, treat compatibility as unconfirmed and ask DEWALT support rather than experimenting.
Bottom line for an older 20V MAX tool
Choose a DEWALT 20V MAX battery whose exact model is approved in your tool’s manual. DCB203 2Ah and DCB204 4Ah are manufacturer-documented examples, and DEWALT documents the DCB612 12Ah FLEXVOLT pack for 20V MAX tools and chargers. Capacity affects runtime expectations, weight and balance, but it does not replace model-specific approval. If your tool is actually an older 18V model, stop and check the DCA1820 adapter guidance and its exceptions instead of treating it as an ordinary 20V MAX connection.
