After a renovation, the materials most often recoverable in the United States are clean wood, steel and other metals, concrete, asphalt, brick, and block. EPA construction-and-demolition guidance also identifies drywall or gypsum, glass, plastics, asphalt shingles, and usable building components as potential recovery streams. The important qualification is that “recoverable” describes what can be processed in principle; a particular facility may reject the same material because of contamination, condition, quantity, local rules, or a lack of nearby market.
Keep sound components intact for direct reuse before breaking them down for recycling. Doors, cabinets, windows, fixtures, appliances, hardware, flooring, lumber, bricks, and lighting can often go to a reuse center, donation program, or materials exchange. For everything else, sort early and confirm acceptance with the processor or local authority before loading a truck.

What can usually be recovered?
The table below is a planning guide, not a guarantee of acceptance. Each outlet sets its own specifications, and some require separate loads for different materials.
| Material | Typical recovery route | Preparation that improves acceptance | Possible outlet |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concrete | Crushed aggregate, road base, fill, subbase, or driveway bedding | Keep concrete clean; remove wood, soil, insulation, and other contaminants | Concrete recycler or construction-and-demolition processor |
| Steel, copper, aluminum, and other metals | Scrap-metal recycling | Separate metals when requested; remove attached nonmetal debris when practical | Scrap yard or C&D processor |
| Clean wood and sound lumber | Direct reuse, engineered wood products, mulch, or other wood processing | Separate treated, painted, fastener-filled, or contaminated pieces from clean wood | Reuse center, wood processor, or C&D facility |
| Drywall and gypsum | Processing that separates paper and gypsum | Keep pieces clean and dry where the outlet requires it; remove obvious contaminants | Gypsum recycler or C&D processor |
| Asphalt pavement | Crushed aggregate or paving-related products | Separate from soil, concrete, and general debris | Asphalt recycler or road-material processor |
| Asphalt shingles | Ground material used in paving products | Grinding and contaminant removal are generally required; verify the facility accepts shingles | Specialized shingle recycler or C&D processor |
| Brick and block | Intact reuse or crushing for fill and subbase | Keep masonry separate and remove mortar or attached materials when the outlet specifies | Reuse center, masonry recycler, or C&D processor |
| Glass and plastics | Material-specific recycling where a market exists | Identify the type and keep it separate; mixed or contaminated pieces may be rejected | Specialty recycler or selected C&D facility |
| Doors, windows, cabinets, fixtures, hardware, appliances, flooring, and lighting | Direct salvage, donation, or resale | Remove carefully, keep complete, clean, and protect fragile parts | Architectural salvage shop, reuse center, donation program, or materials exchange |
EPA’s concise summary is that “wood, metals, concrete, asphalt, brick and block are highly recoverable in many locations.” “Many locations” matters: the statement does not mean every transfer station, curbside program, or landfill accepts those materials for recycling.

Reuse usable components before recycling them
Recycling turns a material into feedstock for another product. Reuse keeps the original component in service and usually avoids the processing needed to make a replacement. During a renovation, decide whether an item can be removed without damage before sending it to a processor.
Items that often have a second life
- Doors and hardware: Remove slabs, frames, hinges, knobs, and closers carefully and keep matching pieces together.
- Windows: Protect glazing and label dimensions, frame material, and operating condition.
- Cabinets and shelving: Photograph the installed layout, then remove boxes, doors, hinges, and countertops without unnecessary breakage.
- Plumbing and lighting fixtures: Keep faucets, sinks, toilets, fans, light fittings, and controls complete with their mounting parts where possible.
- Appliances: Preserve model labels and accessories; ask the receiving organization about working-condition requirements.
- Lumber, flooring, brick, and other architectural details: De-nail, clean, stack, and protect pieces from weather.
Reuse centers and materials exchanges may accept these items, but they can have rules about age, condition, dimensions, safety certification, and appointment times. Arrange the outlet before demolition so a reusable component does not become mixed debris.
Material-by-material guidance
Concrete and masonry
Clean concrete can be crushed into aggregate for road base, fill, subbase, or driveway bedding. Concrete from a slab, footing, walkway, or demolition pile should be kept free of soil, wood, insulation, drywall, and household trash. Large pieces may require a processor with crushing equipment, while some sites accept only a specified size. Brick and concrete block can be reused intact when their condition and dimensions suit a project; otherwise, they may be crushed for fill or subbase. Mortar, coatings, attached flashing, and other contaminants can change the receiving facility’s decision.

Metals
Steel, copper, aluminum, and other scrap metals are commonly recovered because they have established scrap markets. Keep metal framing, pipe, wire, ductwork, appliances, and fixtures separate from general debris. A facility may ask you to separate ferrous steel from nonferrous metals, or to remove insulation, wood, and plastic attached to the metal. Never assume that a metal item with paint, refrigerant, oil, or electrical components follows the same route as clean structural steel; ask the outlet about preparation.
Wood and lumber
Sound, straight lumber is often the best candidate for direct reuse. Clean wood that is not suitable for a building project may be processed into engineered wood products, mulch, or other products. Paint, preservatives, fasteners, adhesives, soil, and water damage affect both safety and marketability. Separate clean dimensional lumber from painted or treated wood, pallets, composite panels, and heavily contaminated pieces if the facility requests it. Pulling nails and screws improves handling, but do not create a safety hazard while doing so; stack pieces securely and tell the receiver what treatment or coating they have.
Drywall and gypsum
Gypsum wallboard appears on EPA’s construction-and-demolition material lists. A processor may separate the gypsum core from the paper facing for new products or soil-related uses, but drywall recycling is particularly dependent on local capacity. Keep gypsum clean and dry if required, and remove insulation, plastic, metal studs, tile, and food or household waste. Moldy, wet, asbestos-containing, or otherwise suspect board should not be placed in an ordinary gypsum load without qualified guidance.

Asphalt pavement and shingles
Removed asphalt pavement can enter aggregate or paving-related markets when it is separated from soil and other debris. Asphalt shingles generally need grinding and contaminant removal before they can be used in paving products. Ask specifically about shingles: a facility that accepts asphalt pavement may not accept roofing material, and some programs limit quantities, roofing types, or loads with attached felt, wood, flashing, or insulation.

Clean brick and block can be salvaged for walls, paving, landscaping, or repair work. If intact reuse is not practical, many locations can crush masonry for fill or subbase. Keep brick and block apart from concrete when the processor has separate specifications, and remove wood, plaster, soil, and trash. Historic or unusual brick may have more value as a reusable component than as aggregate.
Glass and plastics
Glass and plastics are included in EPA’s broad construction-and-demolition inventory, but acceptance varies sharply by type and market. Window glass, mirrors, fiberglass products, rigid plastic pipe, vinyl flooring, foam, and packaging do not necessarily share an outlet. Identify the material, keep it separated, and ask whether the facility accepts that exact form. Broken glass needs secure containers and careful labeling; mixed plastic or plastic bonded to other materials may be rejected.

How to sort renovation debris step by step
- Plan the outlets before demolition. List every major material and call reuse centers, scrap yards, C&D processors, and local authorities. Confirm accepted material, condition, contamination limits, preparation, load size, hours, drop-off rules, and fees.
- Remove reusable components first. Photograph and label doors, windows, cabinets, fixtures, appliances, flooring, lumber, bricks, and lighting before removal. Keep matching hardware with each item.
- Create separate, labeled staging areas. Use distinct piles or containers for clean wood, metals, concrete or masonry, drywall, asphalt, shingles, glass, plastics, reusable components, and residual waste. Do not place a recyclable item in a mixed dumpster merely because it is small.
- Keep loads clean. Prevent soil, food waste, insulation, household trash, and liquids from entering material-specific piles. A small amount of contamination can cause a load to be downgraded or rejected.
- Prepare each stream to the receiver’s specification. Cut or bundle materials only when the facility gives size requirements. De-nail lumber, remove attached nonmetal parts, and separate treated or painted products when requested.
- Check for regulated materials before handling. Stop work and obtain qualified assessment if materials may contain asbestos or lead. Do not mix suspected regulated materials with ordinary C&D recycling.
- Transport safely and document the destination. Cover loose loads, protect sharp metal and glass, respect vehicle weight limits, and keep receipts or acceptance records for the project file.
How to choose between reuse, recycling, and disposal
Use the highest practical route that matches the item’s condition and the local market. A component that is complete and safe may be reused; a damaged but clean material may be recycled; contaminated or regulated material may require a specialized handler or an approved disposal route.
| Route | Best fit | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Direct reuse or donation | Complete doors, windows, cabinets, fixtures, appliances, hardware, flooring, lumber, bricks, and lighting | Does the program accept this age, condition, size, and safety configuration? Is an appointment required? |
| Material recycling | Clean, separated concrete, metals, wood, drywall, asphalt, shingles, brick, block, glass, or plastics | Is this exact material accepted? What contamination, preparation, quantity, and load requirements apply? |
| Specialized handling | Suspected lead- or asbestos-containing materials and other regulated products | Which local and federal requirements apply, and which qualified professional should assess and handle it? |
| Residual disposal | Material with no available reuse or recycling outlet, or material rejected for contamination | What facility is authorized, what fees apply, and must the material be separated or packaged? |
Do not select an outlet solely because it advertises “construction debris.” That label may cover only a defined list of materials, and the facility may send mixed loads to disposal rather than recycling them.
Local acceptance is the deciding factor
Recycling markets and requirements differ by state, county, city, and processor. EPA advises checking state programs and local outlets for jurisdiction-specific rules. A national guide cannot determine whether a facility near you accepts drywall, shingles, window glass, treated wood, or a particular plastic.

When you call, describe the material precisely: for example, “clean unpainted dimensional lumber,” “concrete with no soil,” or “three-tab asphalt shingles with felt removed.” Ask whether the route is direct reuse, material recycling, or disposal; whether loads must be separated; whether there is a minimum or maximum quantity; and whether drop-off, pickup, appointments, or fees apply. Get the answer before loading, because a rejected mixed load may cost more to handle than a correctly sorted one.
Lead, asbestos, and other safety limits
Lead- and asbestos-containing building materials are regulated. A general recycling list is not permission to place suspected material into a normal C&D container. If paint, pipe insulation, ceiling or floor products, siding, roofing, plaster, or other components may contain asbestos or lead, stop and follow applicable local and federal requirements. Qualified professionals can assess the material, specify controls, and arrange compliant handling. Keep suspect material isolated from clean streams and do not break, sand, grind, or sweep it in a way that could spread hazardous dust.
Even ordinary debris needs basic controls: wear task-appropriate eye, hand, foot, and respiratory protection; use safe lifting methods; secure sharp or dusty loads; and keep public areas clear. Follow the receiving facility’s instructions for covered vehicles and unloading.
Why renovation recovery matters
The scale of construction and demolition waste makes sorting consequential. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated that the United States generated 600 million tons of C&D debris in 2018, more than twice the amount of municipal solid waste generated that year. That national estimate covers construction and demolition activity broadly, not household renovations alone and not a recycling rate. For an individual project, the practical benefit comes from keeping reusable components and clean material out of mixed disposal loads while meeting local safety and market requirements.
