When Will Smart Locks Support the Aliro Standard? Aliro Is Already Rolling Out

Aliro smart-lock support is already rolling out, but it is not yet universal. Here is what works with Apple, Samsung, and Google, and what to check before specifying a lock.

Smart locks have already begun supporting Aliro. The Connectivity Standards Alliance released the Aliro 1.0 specification on February 26, 2026, and the first documented residential products and wallet integrations appeared in spring 2026. The important qualification is that Aliro is not yet universal: compatibility still depends on the exact lock or keypad, phone wallet, radio technology, hub, firmware, and country.

For a construction project, Aliro should therefore be treated as a rapidly emerging access standard—not as a guarantee that one lock will work with every phone. Buyers who need a particular experience, such as Apple hands-free unlocking, Samsung Wallet tap-to-unlock, or future Google Wallet support, should verify that feature for the exact model before specifying hardware.

What Aliro is designed to do

Aliro is a digital-access standard intended to make credentials carried by phones and wearables work more consistently with residential locks, commercial readers, and access-control systems. Its potential applications include single-family homes, apartments, offices, universities, hotels, and other buildings where people use a phone or watch as a key.

Aliro supports several ways for a device to communicate with a reader:

Aqara Smart Lock U100, Apple Home Key, Fingerprint Deadbolt, Gray | Matter Over Thread, Keyless Entry Door Lock, Touchscreen Keypad, IP65 Weatherproof, Supports Apple HomeKit, Alexa, Google
  • 【Apple Home and Home Key Support】The U100 is a smart door lock that is fully integrated into Apple Home. It can be unlocked with the Apple home keys by simply tapping an iPhone or Apple Watch, even when the iPhone or Apple Watch is out of power. Moreover, you can manage and share door access for your guests in Apple Home. (NOTE: To share Apple Home Keys, you need an Apple Home Hub)
  • 【Fingerprint and More Ways to Unlock】The Smart Lock U100 offers multiple ways to unlock, including a high-precision fingerprint reader for up to 50 fingerprints, remotely configurable passwords via the Aqara Home app (An Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub is required), one-time local passwords for visitors, and a mechanical key for emergency use. * The NFC card is not included and is sold separately.
  • 【Automations with Aqara and Third-Party Devices】With an Aqara Zigbee 3.0 hub, the Smart Door Lock U100 is compatible with third-party ecosystems like Google Home, Alexa, IFTTT as well as the Aqara Home app, allowing it to be easily integrated into a wide range of smart home setups and used in smart home automations. For example, when someone presses the Aqara Video Doorbell G4, you will be able to view who is at your door and easily unlock the U100.
  • 【Auto Lock & Do Not Disturb Mode】Thanks to the built-in gyroscope inside the lock, the auto-lock feature locks the door for you after you close it. Alternatively, you can disable this feature and leave the door always open. Also, the Do Not Disturb mode can mute the door lock sounds within a certain period of time, to avoid affecting your family’s sleep when you get back home late.
  • 【A Durable and Secure Biometric door Lock with Long Battery Life】 The U100 is powered by 4 AA 1.5V batteries (included) and has a long battery life of up to 8 months. Also, a USB-C port for emergency charging is available. The lock body made of zinc alloy has an IP65 rating and complies with the same safety standard as BHMA Level 3. It’s capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -31°F to 151°F. Your sensitive data (e.g., fingerprints) is stored locally and fully AES encrypted.
  • NFC: tap a phone or wearable against the reader.
  • Bluetooth Low Energy: communicate with the lock when the user initiates the interaction.
  • Bluetooth LE plus ultra-wideband (UWB): support proximity-based or hands-free experiences where the lock, device, software, and credential all support them.

The aim is to reduce the fragmentation created by separate manufacturer and wallet systems. It does not mean that every existing lock will become compatible or that every wallet will immediately support every Aliro product.

Aliro is not a replacement for Matter

Matter and Aliro address different parts of a smart-lock installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Standard Primary role
Matter Smart-home device control and integration between platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings.
Aliro Secure digital credentials and the access transaction between a phone, watch, or other credential-bearing device and a reader or lock.

A lock can support Matter without supporting Aliro. Conversely, an Aliro-capable keypad or reader may still require Matter for setup, control, or integration with a compatible ecosystem. Aliro also does not automatically provide remote locking, guest management, keypad codes, offline operation, or every other feature associated with a smart lock.

See the CSA Aliro FAQ for the distinction between the standards.

The Aliro rollout timeline

  • February 26, 2026: Aliro 1.0 was released by the Connectivity Standards Alliance.
  • February 26, 2026: Nuki Keypad 2 NFC received the certification date shown in the CSA product listing.
  • March 2026: Samsung began rolling out Digital Home Key in Samsung Wallet in select regions.
  • March 24, 2026: Nuki announced its Keypad 2 NFC as an Aliro-certified residential keypad.
  • April 10, 2026: UL Solutions announced Aliro pre-certification and certification testing services.
  • July 16, 2026: Espressif announced an Aliro development solution initially focused on NFC, with Bluetooth LE and Bluetooth LE plus UWB support planned for later releases.

These dates describe separate milestones. Publication of the specification, product certification, retail availability, wallet activation, and regional rollout are not the same event. There is no announced date by which all smart locks will support Aliro.

Which smart locks support Aliro?

The early market uses several different descriptions. Aliro-ready may describe intended future support. Aliro-compatible may describe a product claim with limited credentials or regions. Aliro-certified means the product has completed the relevant certification process. Wallet-enabled is the most practical description for a buyer: it means a particular wallet flow is live for a particular lock, device, region, and transport.

The CSA says products cannot use Aliro branding on packaging or product information until they have completed certification and the relevant branding requirements. Check the exact model in the CSA listings rather than relying only on a brand-level announcement.

Aqara Smart Lock U400 Aqara describes the U400 as Aliro-enabled. Documented Apple Home Key and Apple UWB features; Aqara also documents Samsung Wallet Digital Home Key through SmartThings. Supports Matter over Thread. Apple UWB capability does not prove Android UWB support. Verify the exact regional listing and wallet flow.
Nuki Keypad 2 NFC Nuki calls it the first Aliro-certified keypad for residential electronic door locks, and it appears in the CSA certification listing. Aliro over NFC; documented Apple Home Key and Samsung Digital Home Key paths. It is a keypad paired with a compatible Nuki Smart Lock, not a standalone replacement for the lock. Google Wallet support is not established in the cited Nuki material.
Schlage Sense Pro Schlage describes it as Aliro-compatible. Apple UWB functionality is described as current. Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet Aliro keys are described as expected later in 2026, subject to certification. Do not purchase it assuming Samsung or Google Wallet access is already live.

Aqara Smart Lock U400

The U400 is one of the clearest early choices for an Apple user seeking a documented UWB and Home Key experience. Aqara’s U.S. page listed a price of $269.99 when checked, although price and included accessories can change.

For the documented Apple UWB experience, Aqara lists iPhone 11 or later, with exclusions noted by Aqara; Apple Watch Series 6 or later, excluding Apple Watch SE; iOS 18.5 or later; watchOS 11.5 or later; and a Thread-enabled Apple Home hub such as a HomePod mini, HomePod (2nd generation), or specified Apple TV 4K models. These are U400 Apple requirements, not universal Aliro requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aqara also says the U400 supports Samsung Wallet Digital Home Key through SmartThings. Confirm regional availability, the required SmartThings setup, and the current firmware before specifying it for a project.

Nuki Keypad 2 NFC

Nuki’s product illustrates that Aliro support may be delivered by an NFC keypad paired with a lock rather than built entirely into the lock body. Nuki requires a Matter-capable Nuki Smart Lock, a Matter-enabled hub from the relevant provider, a compatible mobile device, and an Aliro-compatible credential in a digital wallet.

For the stated Apple Home Key path, Nuki lists an iPhone XS or later with iOS 18.6 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 11.6 or later. Those requirements apply to Nuki’s documented setup and should not be generalized to every Aliro product.

Schlage Sense Pro

Schlage describes Sense Pro as an Aliro-compatible, Matter-over-Thread lock with Apple UWB functionality. Schlage says Samsung Wallet and Google Wallet Aliro digital keys are expected later in 2026 after certification. That is an announced path, not confirmation that those wallet features are available for every buyer today.

For a construction specification, require confirmation of the exact certification status, firmware, wallet availability, and country before treating the Sense Pro as a multi-wallet solution.

Apple, Samsung, and Google: what works?

Apple Home Key and Apple UWB

Apple Home Key is Apple’s wallet-based home-key experience. It is not synonymous with Aliro. A lock may support Home Key without Aliro, support Aliro NFC without UWB, or support Apple UWB while other wallet integrations are still pending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Apple buyers, check whether the manufacturer specifies Home Key, Apple UWB, or both. Also check the required iPhone and Apple Watch generations, operating-system versions, Thread border router or Home hub, and whether the feature works in the product’s sales region.

Samsung Wallet

Samsung began rolling out Aliro-based Digital Home Key in Samsung Wallet in select regions in March 2026. Samsung’s developer information identifies early certified-lock participants including Aqara, Nuki, ULTRALOQ, and Allegion brands such as Schlage, but a brand’s participation does not prove that every model is currently enabled.

Galaxy owners should check the exact lock model, country, SmartThings requirements, phone or watch compatibility, and the current Samsung Wallet setup instructions before buying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Wallet

Google is involved in the Aliro ecosystem, but that does not establish live Google Wallet support for every Aliro-certified lock. In the cited product material, Schlage describes Google Wallet support as expected later in 2026, while Nuki’s Keypad 2 NFC announcement does not establish Google Wallet support.

If Google Wallet is essential, wait for an explicit, model-specific manufacturer statement that names the lock, wallet, region, phone requirements, and activation process. Do not infer support from “Matter-compatible,” “Aliro-ready,” or a general announcement about Google’s participation.

NFC versus UWB: why the distinction matters

NFC is the simpler early use case. The user taps a phone or wearable on the reader. It is familiar, relatively straightforward to communicate to customers, and does not require hands-free proximity behavior.

UWB can enable more precise proximity detection and hands-free unlocking. It requires compatible UWB radios in the lock and device, appropriate operating-system and wallet support, secure implementation, power management, and certification. An iPhone UWB experience does not demonstrate Samsung or Google UWB compatibility.

The staged implementation support announced by Espressif—NFC initially, with BLE and BLE plus UWB planned later—illustrates why Aliro products are likely to arrive in phases rather than with every transport enabled at once.

For most projects, specify the entry method explicitly: “NFC wallet tap,” “Bluetooth user-initiated unlock,” or “UWB hands-free unlock.” “Aliro support” alone is not precise enough.

Should you buy an Aliro-ready smart lock now?

Buy now when

  • Your preferred wallet feature is already documented as live for the exact model.
  • You are comfortable with the required app, account, hub, controller, firmware, and regional limitations.
  • You want Apple Home Key or Samsung Wallet access available now rather than waiting for a universal market.
  • The product has the radio hardware required for your chosen experience, especially Thread or UWB.
  • You have a dependable fallback such as a physical key, keypad, fingerprint reader, NFC card, or emergency power method.

Wait when

  • You specifically need Google Wallet and the manufacturer describes it only as planned or coming later.
  • You require cross-platform UWB hands-free unlocking.
  • You need a simple retrofit and the available products are complete deadbolts or add-on keypads with substantial hub requirements.
  • You expect one credential to move seamlessly between Apple, Google, and Samsung ecosystems.
  • You want a large, mature selection of independently certified models with clear regional support.

What construction professionals should specify

For new construction, multifamily housing, hospitality, offices, or retrofit work, treat wallet access as one layer of the access-control design. Document the exact product and the experience required rather than writing “Aliro-compatible lock.”

A useful specification checklist includes:

  1. Exact lock, keypad, reader, and firmware model.
  2. CSA certification status and certification date, if applicable.
  3. Supported transport: NFC, Bluetooth LE, UWB, or a combination.
  4. Supported wallet: Apple Home Key, Samsung Wallet, Google Wallet, or a vendor credential.
  5. Supported phone and watch models and minimum operating-system versions.
  6. Required Matter controller, Thread border router, SmartThings hub, or vendor bridge.
  7. Country and regional availability of the wallet feature.
  8. Whether the credential works offline and how shared or guest access is managed.
  9. Fallback entry during a dead battery, lost phone, network outage, or unavailable wallet.
  10. Whether the product is a complete lock or an add-on keypad requiring a compatible lock.

Commission the system using the same phone models, wallets, hubs, and firmware versions that occupants will use. Test ordinary access, revoked access, battery failure, emergency power, lost-device recovery, and handoff to a new resident or employee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What existing smart-lock owners can do

  1. Identify the exact model and hardware revision. A brand-level Aliro announcement is not enough.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s current support page. Look for a specific Aliro statement, wallet name, transport, region, and firmware requirement.
  3. Check the CSA certification listing. Certification status should be verified at the product level.
  4. Inspect the radios and secure hardware. A firmware update cannot add NFC, UWB, or suitable secure credential hardware that the lock does not contain.
  5. Confirm the hub or controller. Matter-over-Thread products may require a Thread border router or compatible ecosystem hub.
  6. Check the wallet separately. A lock may work in Apple Home, Google Home, or SmartThings for normal control while lacking that platform’s wallet key.
  7. Use the manufacturer’s migration instructions. Adding a wallet credential may require a particular setup sequence or re-enrollment; do not assume the process is identical across brands.

Important limitations and failure modes

  • Matter compatibility is not Aliro compatibility. Matter can provide ordinary smart-home control without providing a wallet key.
  • Aliro-ready is not necessarily usable today. Certification, firmware, wallet activation, and regional release may still be pending.
  • Radio support is not interchangeable. NFC, Bluetooth LE, and UWB deliver different experiences.
  • Wallet availability can be regional. A lock sold in a country may not support the advertised wallet there.
  • A hub may still be required. The lock’s Bluetooth or Thread radio does not necessarily eliminate the need for a Matter controller or border router.
  • Existing retrofit locks may not be upgradeable. Secure credential storage and reader-side hardware can make Aliro support impossible through firmware alone.
  • Shared access may be limited. Do not assume that every first-generation consumer implementation provides mature guest or family credential sharing. Future Aliro features may expand this area.
  • Battery failure remains a building-operations issue. Specify and test a physical, keypad, card, fingerprint, or emergency-power fallback appropriate to the property.

Aliro versus Apple Home Key in practical terms

It is tempting to describe Aliro as “Home Key for Android,” but that is incomplete. Home Key is Apple’s user-facing wallet experience. Aliro is an industry standard intended to coordinate digital-key transactions across participating credential platforms and access products.

In practice, a buyer may encounter all of these combinations:

  • Apple Home Key without Aliro.
  • Aliro NFC without UWB.
  • Apple UWB today, with Samsung or Google wallet support announced for later.
  • Matter and Apple Home control without any wallet credential.

The only reliable way to choose is to match the desired phone, wallet, transport, lock model, hub, and region—not to rely on a single standards label.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aliro available now?

Yes. Aliro 1.0 was released on February 26, 2026, and early certified products and wallet integrations began appearing in spring 2026. Availability remains model- and region-dependent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every Aliro lock work with Apple, Google, and Samsung phones?

No. Wallet, phone model, operating system, radio technology, firmware, hub requirements, certification, and regional rollout all affect compatibility.

Can Aliro be added to an existing smart lock with a firmware update?

Sometimes, but not generally. The lock may lack required NFC, UWB, reader, or secure-credential hardware, so compatibility must be confirmed for the exact model.
