When Should I Water My Cactus? A Practical Guide to Timing

Water a typical desert cactus after its potting mix dries completely, then let excess drain away. Season and cactus type change the timing.

For a typical indoor desert cactus, water when its potting mix has dried completely. Then soak the root area until water drains from the pot, and empty the saucer. Check the soil rather than following a weekly schedule: drying time varies with light, temperature, pot size, and mix. Holiday cacti need a different approach.

How to tell when a desert cactus needs water

Check the growing medium, not the calendar. During active growth in spring and summer, a useful first check is whether the top inch is dry. Nebraska Extension recommends soaking the whole root ball at that point, and Colorado State PlantTalk gives the same top-inch rule of thumb. The University of Minnesota Extension gives the more cautious general rule: “Always allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.”

These checks work together: use surface dryness as a cue to assess the pot, but make sure the medium has dried through before watering again. A small pot in a warm, bright spot may dry much faster than a large pot in a cool, dim room, so there is no reliable number of days that fits every cactus.

How to water once the mix is dry

  1. Water the potting medium thoroughly so moisture reaches the root area.
  2. Let excess water run freely out of the drainage holes.
  3. Empty the saucer; do not leave the pot standing in water.

Repeated shallow sprinkles are not a substitute for a thorough watering followed by a dry period. Soil that stays waterlogged, or a pot left in standing water, can contribute to root and stem rot.

Make sure the pot and mix can drain

Use a pot with drainage holes and a porous, free-draining growing medium. Commercial cactus mix is one option, provided it drains quickly; the label alone does not guarantee suitable drainage. The University of Minnesota Extension offers a 1:1 mixture of potting soil and coarse sand as an example and says a moistened mix should fall apart when squeezed. Clemson Extension also recommends a packaged cactus mix if it drains quickly. Neither source establishes one formula as ideal for every species and home.

How watering changes in fall and winter

As light levels fall and growth slows, reduce watering. The right amount depends on whether your cactus is genuinely cool and dormant or remains warm, bright, and actively growing indoors.

  • Cool, dormant cactus: Let the mix become very dry between waterings. Some cold-dormancy guidance recommends no routine water, with a light application only if the plant begins to shrivel.
  • Low-light winter conditions: Water only enough to prevent severe shrinking and withering, rather than keeping the soil continually damp.
  • Warm, brighter conditions with continued growth: The plant may still use water; judge by the mix’s dryness and the plant’s growth rather than applying a blanket winter ban.

Seasonal dates vary by location and by the conditions inside your home. A calendar for one climate or hemisphere is not a universal dormancy schedule.

Holiday cacti need a different watering trigger

Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter cacti are rainforest epiphytes, not desert cacti. New Hampshire Extension advises watering when their potting soil is dry to the touch and allowing excess water to drain. While a holiday cactus is budding or flowering, Iowa State Extension recommends keeping the soil evenly moist; after flowering, water less frequently. Do not apply the desert cactus’s long, dry winter rest to these plants.

A simple decision check

  • Desert cactus, active growth: Check the top inch; water thoroughly when the mix has dried through.
  • Desert cactus, cool and dormant: Allow a longer dry period; routine watering may not be needed unless the plant starts to shrivel.
  • Holiday cactus: Water when the mix is dry to the touch; keep it evenly moist while budding and flowering.

The cactus family includes nearly 2,000 species, according to the University of Minnesota Extension’s 2026 review, so species and growing conditions matter. The most dependable routine is to identify the type of cactus, check the medium, and ensure water can drain away.
