Fishbone cactus (Epiphyllum anguliger) usually blooms in summer. Epiphyllum cacti more broadly flower in spring or summer, so expect a seasonal window rather than a guaranteed month; indoor conditions and the plant’s seasonal cycle affect timing.

What do fishbone cactus flowers look like?

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes fishbone cactus flowers as fragrant, white and up to 10 cm across. Its profile places flowering in summer. For Epiphyllum generally, the RHS notes that flowers may open in the evening and often last only a couple of days; that timing and duration are genus-level guidance, not a precise promise for every fishbone cactus.

How can you encourage it to flower?

The RHS recommends giving Epiphyllum a cooler, drier winter rest to encourage flower buds, then changing care when buds appear.

  1. During winter: Keep the plant somewhere cool, around 11–14°C (52–57°F), and reduce watering so the compost stays just moist, not bone-dry.
  2. When buds form: Move it back to a warmer position above 15°C (60°F) and resume its usual watering regime.
  3. During active growth: Provide bright, filtered light and shield the plant from strong midday sun. From mid-spring to late summer, water when the compost begins to dry, letting excess drain away.

Do not leave the pot soggy or standing in water. The RHS says the cool, drier spell stimulates bud production; it does not guarantee flowers on a particular schedule.

Why might a fishbone cactus not be blooming?

  • No cool winter rest: Check whether the plant had a cooler, drier period during winter. The RHS guidance identifies this as a way to encourage buds.
  • Pot is too large: Epiphyllum generally flower best when their roots have filled the container. Repot sparingly, avoid overpotting and, when repotting is needed, do it after flowering.
  • Growing conditions are unsuitable: Review light and watering. Aim for bright filtered light, slightly moist compost during active growth, and reduced watering in the cooler winter rest.

These are useful horticultural checks, not a diagnosis: the available guidance does not establish that any one factor explains every plant that fails to flower.

How should you interpret the season?

The RHS plant profile gives summer as the species-specific flowering season, while its Epiphyllum guide says the group generally blooms in spring or summer. Treat that as a broad seasonal expectation, not a fixed calendar date. The guidance comes from the UK, so use your own local seasonal cycle and the plant’s conditions rather than assuming the same months apply everywhere.
