Cool, calm air loses less water to evaporation and wind drift, and the grass has daylight to dry the blades. Avoid midday watering when you can. Evening and night watering is the exception that depends on climate, so check your local extension guidance and water-use rules before you lock in an automatic schedule.
Why early morning works best
Three things determine how much of your water actually reaches the roots: how much evaporates in the air, how much the wind carries onto the driveway, and how long the grass stays wet afterward. Early morning does well on all three. Iowa State University Extension gives a 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. window for lawns, citing lower evaporation, less wind, and time for the turf to dry during the day. The Virginia Cooperative Extension publication Summer Lawn Management: Watering the Lawn states that water is best applied “early in the morning — a few hours before or just after sunrise — when evaporation loss and the impact of wind are lowest.”
Midday is the worst time for the same reasons in reverse. Heat and wind speed up evaporation and push spray off target, so more of the water you pay for never soaks in.

Setting the schedule
- Check local rules first. Watering days, hour restrictions, and drought measures are set locally and change. Confirm them with your water utility or city before programming anything.
- Choose a start time that finishes before the day heats up. Pick a start between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. so the run ends while the air is still cool and the grass can dry in daylight.
- Use a programmable timer for hose-connected sprinklers. A timer keeps the early start consistent, but it only sets when water runs. It does not tell you how much water the lawn needs.
- Aim the heads at turf. Adjust them so spray lands on grass rather than driveways, sidewalks, or the street. Water on hard surfaces is lost and can run off.
- Set run times from measurement, not a guess. Follow the steps in the next section.
How long to run: measure output instead of guessing
Sprinklers differ in how much water they put down per minute, so a fixed number of minutes that works next door may over- or under-water your lawn. Iowa State University Extension suggests rain gauges for measuring output.
- Place several rain gauges or straight-sided cans across the spray pattern, including the edges, at ground level in the grass.
- Run the zone for a set period, such as 15 minutes, and note the depth in each container.
- Average the readings. For example, if a 15-minute run averages 0.25 inch, reaching 1 inch takes about 60 minutes (1 ÷ 0.25 × 15).
- Check the soil afterward. Iowa State’s estimate of 1 to 1½ inches of water per week is a regional figure for many Iowa lawns, not a universal requirement. Adjust it to your soil and weather.
UC Statewide IPM Program’s “Lawn Watering” guidance says most lawns need water when the top two inches of soil have dried. Dig a small test hole or probe with a screwdriver to check, and skip watering after rain.

Runoff and watering cycles
If water pools or flows off the lawn, the run time is too long for the soil to absorb it. UC IPM recommends shorter, more frequent watering when runoff occurs, and allowing time for water to soak in between cycles. Colorado State University Extension describes a similar two-cycle method: run each zone for about half the intended time, wait for the soil to absorb it, then repeat the cycle.
Over time, the goal is deeper, less frequent watering. UC IPM says most lawns benefit from that pattern rather than short daily sprinkles, and it recommends adjusting the schedule by season and shutting irrigation off during rain.

The Built-in metal filter can effectively prevent sediment and other larger particles from entering the irrigation system.
Evening and night watering
Morning is the broad recommendation for lawns, but it is not the only defensible answer. The difference comes down to disease pressure. Wet leaves overnight can favor fungal disease, which is why Iowa State and Virginia Cooperative Extension caution against evening and late-afternoon watering in humid or wet conditions.
Colorado State University Extension answered a question about a dry Colorado climate and recommended a 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. window, noting that a homeowner can choose evening or early morning. That advice reflects dry conditions. If you live where humidity is high, rain is frequent, or lawn diseases have appeared, stick with early morning. If you are in a dry region, ask your local extension office whether evening watering is reasonable for your turf.

Water use figures to treat with care
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “When It’s Hot” page states that “Experts estimate that 50 percent of the water we use outdoors goes to waste from evaporation, wind, or runoff due to overwatering.” The page does not name those experts, identify the underlying study, or give a publication year. Cite the figure as an EPA estimate, not as a finding from EPA research.
The Iowa figure of 1 to 1½ inches per week comes from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s “Watering Home Lawns” page, which also does not state a publication year. Use it as a starting point for Iowa lawns and adjust for your own climate.

The big display features a clear interface for managing your watering schedule without complicated menus, making it user-friendly for everyone, including those in their seventies.
Optional controls
A timer or smart irrigation controller can make an early-morning schedule easier to keep, and UC IPM lists smart controllers and soil-moisture sensors as system upgrades. None of these tools replaces measuring output and checking the soil. A controller set to a generic run time will still over-water a lawn that needs less.
Keep the outcome in view: the best time to run sprinklers is early morning, and the best run time is the one that puts the right depth of water on your lawn without runoff.
